Props and Wardrobe

By Nicole, Tracy, Rosette and Nuala

Emily’s outfitEmily who played Lisa wore black leggings with a black and white designed vest top. We thought this would be a good outfit for her to wear as it is casual but the top makes the outfit dressy. As she is at a party we thought this was appropriate as she looked appropriate for the party scene. The codes and conventions of a thriller usually have black and white colours used. These colours show there is a good and bad side to Lisa, which will leave the audience wondering if Lisa is a good or a bad character and will make them think.

Rick’s outfitRick who plays Rich the gangster wore a dark navy jacket and black jeans. We decided he should wear dark colours so he looked mysterious. These colours make him a very suspicious character and as his hood is up it hides his identity and makes him look a scary character. The colours navy and black portray a bad image of Rich and black is usually associated with bad people. Also as parties are usually dark it is less obvious for the other people to see him. When you see him in the camera it makes it really tense and leaves the audience on the edge of their seats when he just grabs her and drags her off.

Tape

We used black masking tape to cover Lisa’s mouth with when she is tied up behind the chair. We specifically used black tape as black is a colour used mostly in thrillers as it conveys a dark and suspicious mood. This creates an eerie atmosphere and it makes the audience want to know where Lisa is and what is going to happen to her next.

Gloves

Once again we kept the colours of our equipment's and props very dark to portray a sinister mood. Furthermore, most criminals wear black gloves when committing a crime, so we wanted to meet these realistic expectations. This also hides the identity of the gangster so he remains anonymous and the audience have no idea of who he is.

Rope

The rope is a dark grey colour as we wanted it to be visible when doing the panning shot as Lisa(Emily) is wearing black leggings, so if we were to use black rope it would of blended in so we decided to use dark grey. Also, when people are kidnapped they are typically tied up so we once again wanted to meet this stereotypical scenario. This makes the audience weary for Lisa’s safety as her being tied up shows she is not safe and is in danger.

Balloons We used balloons for our party scene to make the party seem more realistic as our target audience are mainly teenagers and as they are teenagers they are more than likely to be aware of how a party is conducted and what it looks like so we included that so they would be able to relate to it. Also, we used balloons so that our scene doesn’t look gland. The balloons really brighten up the scene and the balloons also represent how free young people are in a party so the floating in the air and throwing of the balloons convey how teenagers would normally act in a party, and the actions of our actors also mirror this.

Plastic cups.• Once again our group and I thought it was

vital that our party scene really looked realistic, so we decided to hand some of the girls in our party scene plastic cups which were filled up with water, the water was used to represent vodka or tequila as they’re both clear liquids so using water to represent these alcohols was ideal. This is because these are typical drinks that teenagers would drink at a party. The use of cups was effective as our target audience will once again be able to relate.

• However, as you can see in the party scene not everyone is holding a cup in their hand this is because our aim was to convey that not all teenagers drink and some do only go to party to dance and have fun, so we asked some of our actresses to commit those actions so we could meet that aim.

Audience feedback.

• The use of cups and water our significant as there is an aim that we were purposely trying to meet, which is stated in the previous slide.

• So, we asked 23 teenagers who we had showed our rough filming to and who were aged(16-18) “what drink you think the girls who were holding cups are drinking”

And the results show..

• As a group we were pleased with these results as our target audience were teenagers and if the teenagers that we asked were able to recognise the aim of the use of plastic cups and a clear liquid then the other population of teenagers are also likely to interpret this.
