Outback and Rivers
ABOUT THIS REGIONTake your next holiday in one of our National or Regional Parks in the Murray, Riverina and Outback regions of NSW. Our rivers will amaze you: kayak through the river red gums down the Murrumbidgee, fish for Murray Cod or wander through the historic Yanga homestead. Camp under our stunning Outback skies at Sturt National Park, share our Aboriginal culture at Mutawintji, or birdwatch in the vast Paroo Darling National Park.
WHERE TO STAYThere are a number of accommodation and camping options in nearby NSW national and regional parks. You’ll find a wide range of options from homesteads to shearers’ quarters, from secluded campsites to real bush campgrounds. Please refer to a park fact sheet or go to nationalparks.nsw.gov.au for detailed maps for the specific location.
Please note that entrance fees apply at some national and regional parks and nature reserves. These go towards nature conservation and improvement of park facilities.
ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTSDetailed versions of these itineraries are freely available online. Go to nationalparks.nsw.gov.au, visit any of the Outback and Rivers National Parks, click on links and downloads to view the itineraries.
THE MURRAY TO BROKEN HILL TREK
You’ll want to pack the fishing rod, your bird books, binoculars, and the camera for this spectacular trek which will take you from the river red gums of the Murray to the blue skies and red earth of Outback NSW. Check out the Reed Beds Bird Hide at Mathoura – the kids will love it. Cruise on the Barmah-Millewa wetlands. Experience what life was like 150 years ago at Yanga homestead. Take a tour to the Walls of China at Mungo. Go underground in a Broken Hill mine, and visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Search for the horizon from the Mundi Mundi lookout, and watch the sun go down at the Sculpture Symposium. It’s a perfect holiday to camp by the Darling River at Kinchega National Park, treat yourself to a little luxury in Broken Hill or pull your van up alongside the Murrumbidgee River near Balranald.
This itinerary will help you find all of these great things to do, and more. Slow down and use the map to explore some secluded spots in our national parks.
THE BACK O’ BOURKE EXPLORER
The morning mist on the Murray in Echuca, pierced by the steam whistle of a paddle steamer is an unforgettable way to experience the Murray River. Journey along The Long Paddock. Sit a while at the Reed Beds Bird Hide in Mathoura, and go with the flow at Edward River Bridge picnic area. Step back in time at the Peppin Heritage Centre at Deniliquin. Check out the Headless Horseman sculpture at the Black Swamp, and be refreshed at the historic Booroorban Pub. Stay on the Cobb Highway. Now go on the boards at Shear Outback in Hay. Keep going north and find out if former Cobb & Co Changing Station at One Tree Hotel lives up to its name. Admire the sandstone buildings that grace the streets of Wilcannia. The Opal Miners Way will take you to White Cliffs and Paroo Darling National Park. Stand on the edge of Lake Peery and the Paroo River. Explore the artesian mound springs, and be amazed at the gibber landscape. It’s said that once you’ve crossed the Darling you won’t want to leave. Travel the Darling River Run, visiting Bourke, Tilpa and Gundabooka National Park, and see where the Warrego and Darling meet on Toorale National Park.
This is a fantastic itinerary to camp under the stars, sleep underground or share station life at an Outback Bed property.
THE RIVER TO THE OUTBACK
Take the best of natures drives and explore a variety of superb national parks. Watch the sun filter through the river red gums at Mathoura as the spring mists rise from the Murray River. Relax by the Murrumbidgee River at Yanga National Park, and kayak across Yanga Lake. Discover the breathtaking Walls of China at Mungo. Wander through a rare remnant of magnificent Riverina forest in Cocoparra National Park. Immerse yourself in the Aboriginal history of Mount Grenfell. Throw in a line to the Darling River between Tilpa and Wilcannia at the Coach and Horses campground in Paroo Darling National Park.
An amazing camping holiday with plenty of beautiful national parks to pitch your tent in. We’ll supply the night skies, the spectacular wildflowers and the places for you to connect with nature. Take your time. Explore. Relax.
