President’s LetterDear Fellow HCE Members, Friends and Supporters,

By the time you read this, the unusually warm summer will be past and we will be well into fall dashes of color with cold days of winter to follow.

Summer is a time for growing, enjoying vacations, gardening, mowing grass and hopefully some relaxing. But as Fall approaches, we must think of our first dash of color, renewing our zeal and enthusiasm in HCE. Think about the programs you would like included next year and bring them to the Program Book Planning on October 30.

The second dash of color is our First Books Reading Program. Congratulations on 20 years of reading. We celebrated this accomplishment with a Fair Booth at the Outagamie County Fair. Thank you to the members who helped construct the booth. It was a great time to let others know about the First Books Program and its amazing history. Thank you Marcie and Judy for all your hard work.

Another dash of color is members getting involved in programs and becoming leaders. It will propel you and all of us with a dash of color into the year 2019.

Our final dash of color is promoting HCE to your friends and neighbors. New people come with new ideas and extra hands to complete projects and share information.

I am closing with a quote from a writer, Larry McMurtry “If you wait, all that happens is you get older.”

Dear HCE Members,

”Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.” Earl Nightingale With that quote, I look to the future and one of my favorite seasons…fall! I love the crisp air, apples on the tree, hot apple cider and the beautiful colors that our Wisconsin trees offer as we drive hither and yon! I hope you can enjoy the minutes and the moments!

My fall is looking to be a time for teaching and outreach work in Outagamie County. I will be teaching Civil Rights training for county employees this fall and also working on some new curriculum training with the Family Court Services staff. I have been doing some reading and discovering new research in the areas of family co-parenting strengths and building resiliency skills. We continue our Caregiver Coalition outreach work with monthly Caregiver Cafés at the Fox River Mall and will be conducting some onsite programs at work sites in the county. On October 24th we will have the Senior Autumn Fest at the Hortonville Community Center in cooperation with the Senior Task Force and many agencies that will be available for the Agency Fair. More details will be found in this newsletter.

In between, I continue to have meetings on the transition to UW-Madison – some are teleconferences, some are in person meetings in Madison. I have had lots of “think and drive” time lately! If you need to contact me, please call and leave a message or you can email me as well. I promise we will connect.

Enjoy the minutes ahead!!

Sincerely,

Karen DickrellFamily Living Educator

Quilt Show Report

The letters have been sent out, so we can begin the planning. Start working on your items for display!

Cultural ArtsLinda Biese, Chairperson

We had a Leader training on the House of Hope Orphanage, the speakers were Raissa Ashman and Judy Rottier. We had 17 in attendance. It was very interesting. In the past our charity group has made quilts and pillowcases that were taken there.

There are cultural art items at the State Convention this year.

Charity Workshop

We have been working hard. We have made several quilts for local fund raisers, several fire victims and our patriotic ones to be given away.

We have also been making walker bags, dementia blankets, four different types of pillows, lap robes and miscellaneous items.

Also the ladies have been working on the greeting cards and have been preparing the calendars for our Picture Perfect Day.

We have been asked to make weighted blankets, so that is our next venture.

Thank you everyone for all of your help and donations.

Wisconsin Bookworms

Marcie has a full set of readers ready to go in October. We are waiting for the State Bookworms Chair to get the book labels ready for us so we can put them in the books, sort by site and deliver.

We saved money by ordering through Scholastic Books. Their cost is $22.88 a set; the state had posted a cost of $24.00 a set. The invoice from Scholastic Books arrived on August 17 and payment is due September 17. Oneida said they sent their payment last week. Once Marcie receives that check, the bill will be paid.

Executive Board ReportWisconsin Bookworms ReportJudy Asman and Marcie Suprise, Wisconsin Bookworms Co-Chairs

Our Wisconsin Bookworms/Early Literacy Program starts on Wednesday, October 3 at 1800 Lawe St, Wednesday October 10 at Kaukauna and Thursday, October 11 at 313 State Street. There are 11 volunteer readers and two substitutes going into all five Head Starts in Outagamie County. Once a month we will be reading, doing activities and giving books to 330 children.

There are a variety of books this year, starting with “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” It is a story about Emily and her dog Clifford who have fun together, sometimes he gets in trouble, but he is a very good watchdog.

The book “Night Animals” is a story about animals in the forest in the dark, who are running from animals bigger than them. The Bat says “Stop, what are you scared of?” The Night Animals replied. “But you are the Night Animals” said the Bat.

Lloyd Llama meets all kinds of animals as he asked his question “Is Your Mama a Llama?” It has playful rhythm of the text and each riddle is sure to result in a variety of responses.

The story “Families Are Different” is about a girl Nico who doesn’t look like her mom or dad. That’s because she is adopted. Nico looks around and realizes she is like everyone else...she’s different.

The children can use their imagination for pretending with the book “A Box can be Many Things.” This box can be a cave, a car, a house and a cage.

The story “Grandma Calls Me Beautiful” takes place in Hawaii. Grandma likes to tell Beautiful her favorite story. She lets her know she is special and to remind her of their traditions.

The charming book “Snow Leopards” is from the National Geographic Kids series. Children can see pictures of the cubs world. Watch the snow leopards tumble and leap, and learn to hunt and play.

Feature ReportHow to Clean Your Summer GearFrom Cleanandhappynest.org

We don’t want to admit it either, but summer is coming to an end. Cooler nights and shorter days are right around the corner. (Sniff!)

Before you store all that summer gear to make room for back to school supplies, make sure they are clean and ready to be put away. You’ll thank yourself next spring! Here are some tips for getting everything in storage condition.

Muddy sneakers: bang the soles together to get rid of dry mud, then scrub the remaining dirt with an old toothbrush and a solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid. Wipe with a damp sponge and let them air dry.

Beach towels: wash them in the hottest water that the fabric can handle, and add fabric softener to the final rinse. Run them through the dryer until they are thoroughly dry.

Sleeping bag: turn it inside out, let it air out and then clean it according to the care label’s instructions.

Outdoor furniture: remove all loose debris, use a mild detergent and water or you may need to use something stronger (abrasive cleaner or bleach if safe for the surface) if there is mold present or if your furniture hasn’t been cleaned for a while.

Outdoor cushions: spot clean acrylic, polyester and cotton fabrics with a solution of liquid dishwashing detergent and lukewarm water. Rinse with clear water and air-dry.

Pool toys: mix ¾ cup of chlorine bleach per gallon of water and soak the toys for 5 minutes. Rinse and air-dry them, then store them in a closed container.

Anytime you use bucket of cleaning solution, keep the little ones away! Now on to that fall wardrobe…
