Point of first contact between hospital and patient.

So OPD is also called “shop window” of hospital.

Can reduce no. of admissions for incare in hospital.

Cost of treatment is less in OPD compared to inpatient so cost effectiveness is obtained.

Key planning and Design parameters OPD should be a separate complex within the hospital building. OPD shiold be in a place where it can share services for diagnostics

department,medical imaging,laboratory,pharmacy,blood bank etc. Should be places near hospital entry to avoid movement in the

wards. Barrier free design. Either centralized polyclinic or decentralized speciality clinic. Effective, comprehensible and proppr signages. Peak hours should be estimated. Privacy of patient to be taken care of. There should be scope for future expansion. Educational resourse areas for patient awareness are to be placed

in waiting room Waiting and public areas should be large enough to accommodate

family and friends. Space recommendation is 0.8m2 per person for 1/3 rd ofavg daily

number.

Physical facilitiesPublic areas,clinic areas,consultation

rooms,special examination rooms,administrative areas,circulation areas,ancillary and auxillary facilities.

Ancillary facilities include-injection rooms,treatment and dressing rooms,farmacy and medical record rooms.

Auxillary facilities include-laboratory,medical imaging,screening clinics,edico social services,health education facility.

Administrative area Contains offices andcounters for hospital administration,nursing

indipendents and medico social workers.Public zone-

1. Main entry2. Foyer-reception,sign board,layout plans and touch screens.3. Bays for trolleys and wheelchair4. Public telephone booths5. Public conveniences6. Value added services such as vending machines for bevarages

and snacks and book store7. Registration area-centralized services for new and repeat

patients,control desk for monitoring sub registration at respective service areas.

8. Cash counter.9. Health educational facilities that include posters, pamphlets and

audio visual aids.10. Waiting areas in foyer.

Joint use zonesUsed by both hospital staff and patients.Consulatation and examination rooms.A room with 12.5m2 is adequate for both

consulatation and examination Includes space for examination tables,wash

basic,instrument trolley,x ray machine,a desk and chairs.

If examination room is separate then 8m2 area is sufficient.

Specialized examinatin rooms can be planned according to facilities provided.

Such as EEG,plaster room, dental examination,audiometry etc.

Clinical laboratoryIncludes a centralized sample

collection area for urine,stool and blood.

Wash rooms for men and women and blood collection room should be provided.

PharmacyShould be placed such that it caters the need

of both inpatients and OPD.Multiple dispencing windows,drug stores and

shelves. Specialized OPD services may include,1. Gastroentestinal endoscopy

lab,sigmoidoscopy,colonoscopy.2. Pulmonary function lab including spirometry.3. Cardiac OPD with ECG,echo

cardiography,TMT and holter monitor lab.4. Staff cloak roams and seminar rooms.

Parking and EntranceMain entrance and OPD should have

gentle sloping rampsEntrance should have double door of

1500mmWheelchair should be readily available at

the entrance.Staff and patient entry should be

separate.Parking close to the entrance for the

convenience of disabled.Barrier free movement.

adopted to the wheel chair patients.

To ensure privacy between patient and staff different counters should be provided.

shared with various consulatation rooms, ditance between them should be short and clearly marked.
