SAINT PIUS X (1835-1914) Feast Day - August 21 Imagine vetoing a papal election! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emper-or. Instead, the cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, after a succession of nobles and diplo-mats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forgetting that his old black cassock had been re-placed by papal white! Taking as his motto “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theo-logical innovations called “modernism,” yet dramatically al-tered the then-common practice whereby people rarely re-ceived Communion for fear of unworthiness, mandating early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent reception. Refusing to bless troops assembled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed Christian Europe despite his peacemaking efforts.—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SHEPHERD'S HEART—There is a box in the entrance of the gym (under the table)at St. Pius X where you can donate individually wrapped food items, toiletries, socks, etc. for Shepherd's Heart Homeless Shelter. Monetary and grocery store gift cards are greatly appreciated and may be placed in the offertory basket in an envelope marked "Shepherd's Heart".

A MESSAGE FROM THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY—The Gospel today announces that the king-dom and salvation are for all people. It is our persistent calling out to Jesus and our faith that count, for Jesus al-ways responds. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

OPERATION SAFETY NET LUNCHES—Every sec-ond Wednesday of the month, 60 lunches are prepared for the homeless. Consider helping to prepare them at Resur-rection’s Quinn Hall at 9:30am. The next date will be Wednesday, August 12. Donations of crackers, snacks, juice, fruit cups or pudding are needed and can be dropped off that day. Also, gift cards for Aldi’s are great-ly appreciated to purchase bread, meat and fresh fruit. Aldi’s $50 gift card covers these expenses. —————————————————————

Baptized in the Lord Nico Vincent Denillo

Let us remember in our prayers the newly baptized, the parents and the godparents as together

they begin their journey with Christ. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS is required for fir st-time par-ents. Parents are asked to call Patty Schwerin at 412-563-0858 to register and arrange for a scheduled time for this class.

BAPTISM SCHEDULING—At the present time, Bap-tisms will be scheduled only one child/family at a time as advised by the Diocese. We will be able to accommodate the number of people allotted by the current mandated requirements for capacity for the church where the Bap-tism is to take place. Social distancing must be observed and face masks are required. Since we have 4 deacons, baptism will now be scheduled on Sundays at the 3 loca-tions—SCS, RES, SPX— after the final Sunday Mass.

FAMILY HOLY HOUR — Every 3rd Monday of the month from 3:00-4:00PM. We will be using the chapel at St. Pius X school building. (If we get a larger group we will use the temporary Church in the gym or both.) This is a great opportunity to show your children the power of Jesus in the Eucharist and spend time in prayer together. August 17 September 21 October 19

MARY’S PRAYER GROUP– We have started a new prayer group that will meet monthly on the 2nd Saturday of the month starting August 8. Meetings will take place at SCS church hall at 3:00PM and fin-ished by 3:50PM in time for 4:00PM Mass. Our next meetings are scheduled for: September 12 October 10 November 14 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOCUS: God’s grace and mercy are promised to all. The readings toda wrestle with the questions of who is in and who is out. When it comes to God’s grace, who will receive it? We learn that all who accept the gift of faith are incorporated into the covenant rela-tionship with God.

INVITATION TO PRAY THE ROSARY STK PARISH FAMILIES, ORGANIZATIONS,

MINISTRIES Catholic Radio - WAOB 106.7 FM

Our Communications Team will oversee audio re-cording for monthly broadcast on Catholic radio WAOB 106.7 in one of our Adult Education class-rooms at Saint Pius X church. You’ll be provided with materials and we’ll guide you. Recording takes only about 45 minutes, and the prayer is taped so don’t worry about mistakes!! We can work with your schedule so that the whole family or group can easi-ly participate. If your parish family, organization, ministry group, or other group of parish friends would like to record the Rosary for broadcast on WAOB, please contact Evangelization Coordinator Patty Schwerin at [email protected] or 412-563-0858

PARISH ROSARY– We pray as a group of Parishioners on Zoom every day at 6:00PM (except Fridays). Please join us. To receive the link, please contact the parish office email at [email protected], and we will email you the link to get in. It is a great way to pray together and see some of your parish friends!

DAILY MASS — Are you retired? Unem-ployed? Looking for more spiritual fulfillment in your life? Why not come to daily Mass. We have two Masses each weekday to choose from. It is a great way to start your day. It is a great way to grow closer to the Lord in His gift of the Eucha-rist. Please see the Mass schedule on page 4 of to-day’s bulletin for Mass times and churches.

HELP NEEDED – We need helpers who can help to wipe down pews after every mass with our sanitizing solution. We need help both on weekends and weekday Masses. In particular we are short on helpers after the 8:45AM Mass at SCS. If you come to Mass and are able to help afterwards, that is great! We want to keep our churches open for daily and weekend Masses and your help makes all the difference! Some churches have not been able to open yet. We are blessed in so many ways, especially with hard working volun-teers. THANK YOU ! If you can help, see the priest after any Mass.

FINANCIAL UPDATE—We showed a surplus of $96.208 (a little deceiving because we did receive a $200,000 gift from someone's will in April which put us in the black. Without that donation we would have run a deficit of $103,792.00). We did manage to run a $45,000 surplus in the last 3 months April thru June (and that was during covid-19). Although most of our employees also took half or no pay for two months, including your priests willing to sacri-fice to keep our parish financially stable, you contin-ued to send in the collection envelopes in the mail throughout this time. Thanks also to our Takeout food team who helped to keep our fundraising efforts alive bringing about $1,000 a week in fundraising income. I can't say enough about the strengths and talents of our parishioners throughout this and their faithfulness! Thanks to our parishioners who ARE THE GREATEST!!!! THANKS! Fr. Jim

Thanks to the Kaufman Family, Jill, Matt and Children Joseph, Thomas, Leo and baby Bet-ty, who recently recorded the rosary on the radio. If your family is interested in doing this, please contact Patty Schwerin.

PARISH FUNDRAISERS

St. Teresa of Kolkata Lanyards can be pur-chased for $5.00 They are a great idea for holding your masks. The are in white with blue lettering saying “Saint Teresa of Kolka-ta, Pray for Us.” They can be purchased at the main office or see the priest before Mass.

ST. PAMPHILUS SALE —The sale of the Church and Rectory at our St. Pamphilus site has finally gone through. The Maronites from Our Lady of Victory will now occupy these properties. They are a church under the Pope. Their Masses are somewhat dif-ferent than what we are used to. We welcome our new neighbors to the neighborhood.
