From the Principal Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome Back to Our Prep-2 Students! It’s been awesome to have the P-2 students back at school. They have certainly injected some fun and energy into
our buildings and grounds! Special thanks to our parents for clearly doing an excellent job of preparing their
children to return to school this week. We know there will have been many reassuring conversations taking place in
households recently. Thanks for your efforts in this regard.
Our teachers also put a lot of thought into how to run these first few days at school to help transition students back
to school successfully. This is important given it’s now a full 10 weeks since many of the P-2 students have been in

their classroom. There have been lots of activities that have provided opportunities for the children to chat, share
stories and catch up. The teachers have also been making sure their students understand any changes of routine,
while highlighting hygiene practices we will all be adopting.
Staggered End to the School Day
The staggered finish to the day seems to be working well. This has been setup to reduce the congregation of adults
at our exit points. Thanks for supporting this process by not arriving too early and by departing quickly, once you
safely have your child/children. There will continue to be lots of staff out in the yard from 3:10pm to make sure all
the children are well supervised.
Current finish times are as follows:
Prep children and their siblings leave at 3.10pm
Grade 1-2 children and their siblings leave at 3.15pm
Grade 3-6 children leave at 3.20pm
Hygiene Practices
Everything possible is being done to keep students and staff safe as they return to school. Gen and Graeme, our
wonderful cleaners, started the progressive cleaning of our school on Tuesday. This is an important part of our new
cleaning routine.
On-Site Learning
We are now into our 7th week of running an on-site learning program for children of essential workers. This has
catered for anywhere between 15 and 60 children on any given day and has presented us with a range of challenges
and an ever changing landscape. One hundred and ten different children have attended at some stage over the 7
weeks, most in a part time capacity.
Despite the challenges, the on-site learning program has been very successful. A big thank you to all of our teachers
and education support staff for their support. The children who attended have been awesome and handled the
situation really well. I’m sure the remaining Grade 3-6 students being supervised will be looking forward to things
returning to normal, as they have for our Prep-2 students.
Home Learning Pack Collection
We only have one more Home Learning Pack collection to do. I can hear the cheers from here! Although the
collection days/times have not changed, we have had to move the collection point. It will now take place near the
bike entrance to the school (please see the map on the front page). If the weather is not in our favour, please call the
office and we will run the pack out to your car.
The students can return their final week’s learning when they return to school on Tuesday, 9th June. Just pop it in
their school bag.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-teacher interviews will be held on Monday 20th July and Tuesday 21st July. Booking details will be made
available in the newsletter shortly. Please keep an eye out for this as our teachers would welcome the opportunity
to discuss the progress of your child/children at this time.
School Review
Our School Review will now take place in Term 4. This was scheduled for next term.
Collection of students In order to enable parental compliance with social distancing requirements, when students return we will need to
have staggered finish times. They will be as follows:
Prep children and their siblings will leave at 3.10pm
Grade 1-2 children and their siblings will leave at 3.15pm
Grade 3-6 children will leave at 3.20pm
Grade 3-6 children move towards their room on the second bell at the start of the school day to
compensate for the additional 5 minutes at the end of the day i.e. instruction will start at 8.50pm.

Given the gradual nature of morning drop offs and the fact we have so many entry points to the school grounds, we
won’t be staggering the start of each school day.

Cyber Topic of the Week: This week’s e-safe topic: Apps to Help with Mental
Health
Obviously, for tweens and teens in crisis, there's no substitute for face-to-face intervention and professional help.
However, since phones are tools most teens (and some tweens) use, they can offer timely resources and help for
those who need it. Aside from general health apps, these tools focus specifically on coping with anxiety,
depression, and specific difficult circumstances via meditation, connection, and other techniques. While some are
focused on an individual's experience, others offer chat and the option to find a therapist.*
Especially when used in conjunction with other approaches, these apps might offer children and teens a little peace
of mind.

Active Travel News
Like many families, my kids and I are looking forward to them joining the classroom again. Home learning has confirmed my appreciation of our wonderful teachers! (And I’m looking forward to concentrating on my day job…)
But if you want to keep channelling your inner teacher, the journey to school is an excellent classroom for teaching life skills – and possibly a more bonding experience than maths and writing!

Teaching kids road safety is like teaching water safety
Knowing how to be safe in traffic is a survival skill – just like being able to swim. Many of us spend hours making sure our kids are safe around water. But are we as serious about teaching them road safety?
We can start teaching our kids about road safety as soon as they can walk: talk to them about what we’re doing and why whenever we are out walking with them – teach them the drill. The important thing is to do it regularly so they have plenty of practice travelling safely under our guidance.
The journey to school is such a good opportunity for us parents to give our kids a really good grounding in road safety: even if we walk or ride it with your child once a week, that’s 40 times they get to practice crossing roads or sharing the bike path under our guidance over a year. What a gift! (More regularly is even better…)
Then – just like at the pool – we judge when they’re mature and capable enough for us to step back a little and let them become more independent.
Active travel for social distancing
Use active travel to help avoid adults congregating at school (even part way):
Children who are ready to travel safely to school without adults could ride, walk or scoot to school independently (or with a sibling/neighbour).
Adults could walk or ride with younger children, possibly even leaving them to ride the final few metres to the gate/crossing by themselves.
If you are driving, try dropping kids off a little further from the school to avoid having too many cars and parents at school. Stanley Avenue and the cricket oval are great drop-off points. Depending on their age, the kids might walk or scoot the rest of the way independently, or with you.
For parents working from home, a walk or ride to and from school with your kids is a great way to get out and active to break up the work day and get some fresh air.
If you haven’t walked or ridden to school (or part way) before, have a practice or two over the next few weeks – it’s a great excuse to get out of the house!
