Dear Families, Staff and Students,

Last Monday, 80 members of staff, parents, students, leaders and staff from the Parish and Catholic Education gathered together to consider the strengths of our wonderful school. Having identified our strengths we plan to build on them to improve our outcomes.

At Holy Family, everything is possible, literally. Notwithstanding changes in Community Health, the Economy, Church, Government and Education Systems we use our Growth Mindset and our mottos such as “never give up” and “find a way” to help people to get to where they want to go.

Values

The values which drive us are:

Our Catholic Identity (Inclusivity); Our passion for learning; Ecological conversion (connecting learning to students lives, their aspirations and their relationship with their God).

Some examples of dreams coming true here include establishing our school in 1981. The community wanted its own Church and School in 1980 and the people at the time “found a way”. The community wanted a Catholic Early Learning Centre in 2014 and our Alive Centre is now open and flourishing. The Fish Farm was a dream of many years and now it is a reality. Every child at Holy Family is an author, a mathematician and a creator - this is both a dream and a reality. We

continue to celebrate our diversity as our greatest strength and our students with more than one language are the lucky ones. Continuity of learning extends across Holy Family Playgroup, “Alive” CELC, OSHC, Vacation Care, Holy Family R-6 School, Parish Sacramental Program and Thomas More College in association with St Augustine’s. As the school expanded up to 900, we dreamt of gaining additional play-space and new Sports Courts. This week the construction of our new courts in Grevillia Park on the northern side of the school.

Future Dreams

Our future dreams position our school as one that embraces its’ community and supports the well-being and learning of all its members. We plan introducing health, wellbeing, family and community hub services to meet the needs of the families within the school environment. We will introduce a strand of STEM studies, integrated across the curriculum, based on the Fish Farm Aquaponic Gardens and Wetlands. An inclusive Sports Academy integrated with the curriculum will enhance our curriculum. We see every child as a musician and look forward to the day that every child plays a musical instrument.

Your Reflection

As members of our community, I invite you to reflect on the strengths of our school as we move ahead together:

• What are you most proud of in our school? • What makes us unique? • What is our proudest achievement in the last year or two? • How does Holy Family meet the needs of our community?

It was great to welcome two new members of staff to our gathering on Monday. A warm welcome to Kirsty Stirling and Claudia Zurcher to the R/1 Team. (Kirsty is replacing Elizabeth Feher as she moves to Year 2 and Sinead Diotallevi on parental leave. Claudia will be replacing Kaine Volkov in Year 2 for two weeks before replacing Gabriella Tyrcha in R/1 when she leaves to have her baby).

‘Curiosity Central’ our new Building

The new building is progressing well:

• The new Covered Walkway is under construction on the eastern side of the development and should be completed by the beginning of next week;

• In the next two weeks the huge concrete slab will be laid in two sections. The process should be fun to watch as a huge flow of concrete will be pumped onto the site;

• In the first week in November, the steel work will be erected. However, most of the super-structure is timber, giving the building a higher rating for sustainability.

We are in an exciting phase of our school development with many projects under way. The most exciting aspects of our school pertain to student learning outcomes, particularly in literacy and numeracy.

FROM THE APRIMThis Sunday, October 18th, is the Feast of Saint Luke the writer of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostle. "Luke, was also a physician and a follower of Saint Paul. Although little is known of him it is believed that he was a Greek slave born at Antioch in Syria who became a doctor as the family for which he worked educated him in medicine so they would have a family physician.

At about the year 51 in Troas, Luke accompanied Saint Paul into Macedonia where they travelled first to Samothrace, Neapolis, and finally Philippi to continue the mission of the Church. Luke is the loyal comrade who stays with Paul when he is imprisoned in Rome about the year 61until his death. Luke’s inspiration and information for his Gospel and Acts came from his close association with Paul and his companions.

Luke's unique perspective on Jesus can be seen in the six miracles and eighteen parables not found in the other gospels. Luke is the gospel of the poor and of social justice evident in Luke, 6:20, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.” Luke also has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially Mary. It is only in Luke's gospel that we hear the story of the Annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth including the Magnificat, the Presentation, and the story of Jesus' disappearance in Jerusalem. It is also Luke that we have to thank for the Scriptural parts of the Hail Mary. Forgiveness and God's mercy to sinners is also of first importance to Luke. Only in Luke do we hear the story of the Prodigal Son welcomed back by the overjoyed father. Reading Luke's gospel gives a good idea of his character as one who loved the poor, who wanted the door to God's kingdom opened to all, who respected women, and who saw hope in God's mercy for everyone.

The reports of Luke’s life after Paul's death are conflicting. Some early writers claim he was martyred, others say he lived a long life. Some say he preached in Greece, others in Gaul . The earliest tradition we have says that he died at 84 Boeotia after settling in Greece to write his Gospel. He is often shown with an ox or a calf because these are the symbols of sacrifice, that Jesus made for all the world. Luke is the patron of physicians and surgeons.Adapted from Catholic on line.
