R I C H A R D D R A K E Richard Drake points out the i rony in his message of appreciat ion for student f inancial a id. “ I t ’s funny for a l inguist to say, but the Stephanie MacDonald Entrance Scholarship has helped me on so many levels that words cannot express my heartfe l t thanks.”

A fourth year Honours student pursuing a BSc in Psychology and a BA in Linguistics, Richard is Vice-President of the Saint Mary’s University Medical Society.

“ I have faced many chal lenges dur ing my universi ty journey,” he says, “but f rom day one, I knew I was not a lone.”

A LY S S A WA LT H E R SWith the news that she has been accepted into the Western Col lege of Veter inary Medicine in Saskatchewan, Alyssa Walthers is one step closer to her dream of becoming a Veter inar ian. After four years at Saint Mary’s, a s lew of awards for f ie ld hockey, and groundbreaking research on European Star l ings, Alyssa was valedictor ian for her May 2016 convocat ion, graduat ing summa cum laude with a BSc in Biology.

“ I am forever grateful to Saint Mary’s generous donors,” says Alyssa. “ In addit ion to my entrance scholarship, I received the Father J.J. Hennessey S.J. Memorial Trust, the Gareth Akerman Memorial Scholarship, the Fi tzpatr ick Family Valedictor ian Award, and a bursary through the Alumni gol f tournament.”

E L I N O R H A M M O N DAn investment in El inor Hammond is an investment in the future. In addit ion to volunteer ing at Sunday Supper, and assist ing the ci ty’s less fortunate, El inor t ravel led to South Afr ica last summer to work with impover ished chi ldren.

El inor is one of four Pol i t ical Science majors to benef i t last year f rom a Patr ick Power Scholarship in Memory of Dr. Terence R.B. Donahoe.

“ I ’m so grateful for th is support ,” she says. “The Trustees in the Estate of Patr ick Power have made a s igni f icant di fference in my l i fe!”

C H A R L O T T E H A M I LTO NCharlotte Hamil ton loves LEAP, a unique, peer-mentor ing program that helps f i rst year students make the transit ion from high school to universi ty l i fe. She loves the close-knit learning communit ies, support f rom program leaders and the encouragement of her peer mentor.

“She got me involved with Enactus and my team placed third in Canada in the Scot iabank EcoLiv ing Green Chal lenge,” says Char lotte, a second-year student in the Sobey School of Business.

Funded through a f ive-year grant f rom The Windsor Foundat ion, and matched by funds from Saint Mary’s, LEAP has made a major di fference for more than 350 f i rst-year students.

T H O K O Z A N I S I T H O L EWhether working as a research assistant, t ravel l ing to New York City as a delegate for Saint Mary’s Model United Nat ions team, or serving on the execut ive of the Afr ican Students Society, Thokozani Sithole understands the value of gett ing involved. As a former student cal ler for the Annual Fund, she also appreciates the importance of gi f ts f rom Saint Mary’s alumni and fr iends.

A World of DifferenceI t was an emotional farewell when Neil Van Horne left China to return to his home in Hali fax. For the 4th year Phi losophy major in Saint Mary’s University’s Faculty of Arts, a one-month summer study program at Bei j ing Normal University in Zhuhai (BNUZ) was far more than an opportunity to earn credits; i t was, quite simply, the chance of a l i fet ime.

“I was born at the hospital up the street from Saint Mary’s and my family home is only a few ki lometres away,” says Neil . “Thanks to a student mobil i ty award, I was able to travel to another continent

and immerse myself in a different culture.”

Nei l extends his gratitude to the donors who make it possible for students to gain precious, cross-cultural competencies they wil l carry forward to their chosen careers. “Thank you so much,” he says. “I now see the world in a very different way.”

Saint Mary’s Universi ty current ly offers exchange programs in 25 countries at over 80 partner institutions. In 2015-16, 135 of our students embarked on an international experience as part of their program of study.
