Until next time,

Your Relieving Principal, Laurinda Lomas

Appointment of our new PrincipalAs we mentioned last week, we are excited to announce that our new Principal, Mrs Leesa Martin has been appointed (pending a short appeal period). Mrs Martin is currently a Deputy Principal at Mona Vale Public School; she has a wealth of experience and is widely respected for her work across the Peninsula Community of Schools. Mrs Martin is looking forward to joining us some time in Term 4. In the coming weeks, Mrs Martin will meet the staff and members of the P&C. We look forward to seeing her soon.

Move-A-ThonThank you to everyone who skipped, bounced, jogged and jumped during our

Move-A-Thon last Wednesday. Thanks also to Mrs Aldridge (nee Miss Clydsdale) who organised the event for our school. As you can see by the photos, a wonderful day was had by all.

We raised more than $12,000 which is an amazing community effort. Thank you!

We have many worthy projects this money can be invested into at EHPS. After our staff meeting next week, I will let you know where these very valuable funds will be directed.

Book Parade on tomorrowWe are excited about our book parade tomorrow, Wednesday 24th August @ 2:00pm on the Lower Oval. Remember, costumes are to be made at home and students are asked to wear their costume all day. Please ensure that each student has a sign that indicates the name of the character and which book the character comes from so that we can see who they are in the parade. If it is raining, the parade will be held in the hall. If you would like to take your child straight home after the parade, you must sign them out at the office. Have fun everyone!

Athletics CarnivalNext week is our K-2 Athletics carnival on Thursday September 1. Volunteers for this day are always welcome. Please contact the school if you are keen to be involved in this fun day.

NAPLANIndividual NAPLAN results were sent home to participating Year 3 and 5 students this week. These results are a momentary snapshot of student achievement and need to be read in the context of all available information about the progress of your child, including teacher observations and school reporting.

Learning Management Business Reform (LMBR) system ‘go live’Next week our new management system goes live. This is a major change in the way we manage finances and school data and is a steep learning curve for all. With this in mind, we appreciate your patience and understanding when calling the office or requesting information.

YEAR 6 HEIGHTS DELIGHTS HELPERSYear 6 students have the privilege of working in the canteen over recess or lunch.

All workers must do an induction course to learn how to present themselves in the canteen, how to handle food and money and general food hygiene just as if they were working in an actual shop.

They are shown where things are and what their various responsibilities may be such as how to serve slushies, how to fill the extras on lunch orders and how to help kids who don’t have an understanding of how much money they have to spend!

Whilst it may be overwhelming for them to do initially, there is plenty of encouragement and support from the canteen mums to make sure their shift is enjoyable. They will ultimately get a reference for their commitment and effort which they can use when they apply for a job out in the real world.

The Year 6 volunteers are given a snack from the canteen after their shift for their assistance in serving

our students. There is a maximum of two per shift, with up to three and even four on a Friday which is the busiest day of each week.

... BOOK WEEK.....|.....MRS MORRISON - TEACHER-LIBRARIAN

BOOK WEEK IS HERE!!!!CHARACTER PARADE and Visiting Performer

REMINDERThe Book Character Parade is for all students K - 6 and will be held this Wednesday, 24th August at 2.00pm. Costumes are to be made at home and students are asked to wear these to school and remain in them for the whole school day, if comfortable.

PARENTS ARE WELCOME, however please be advised there will be NO PARKING on the school grounds during this event.

Remember, this year’s Book Week Theme is “Australia: story country” and characters are to be chosen from a book in our school library, in order that others may be motivated to borrow the books their characters represent.

It is necessary all children wear a label or hold a sign to let others know which character they are representing.

PerformanceDuring this special week children enjoyed a performance as part of our Book Week activities. Called “Then and Now”, it was the story of Women in Australia.

Sponsored BooksI would also like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and grandparents who sponsored a book on Education Day. These books have been added to the collection and children have enjoyed being the first to borrow them.

We are looking forward to an exciting week.

NB: for those still needing some help with choosing a character, please refer to last week’s newsletter for suggestions.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB....|....ON-LINE PAYMENTS ONLYBook Club brochures are going home today and purchases need to be finalised by next Tuesday, 30th August. Payments can ONLY BE MADE ON-LINE by logging on to the Scholastic website at www.scholastic.com.au or download the iPhone and iPad app from the App Store!

For a quick start, just click on ORDER in the top menu or REGISTER first to save your details for next time. Select your school and your child’s class. Add your child’s first name and last initial (so the school knows who the book is for). Enter the item number from the Book Club brochure.

You can order for multiple children at once if they attend the same school. All orders are linked directly to the school and the books will be delivered to your child’s

classroom if you order by the closing date. There’s no need to return paper order forms or payment receipt details to your school!

BASKETBALL GALA DAY.....|.....MS PITTAlthough our Year 6 Gala Day Basketball team were almost complete novices to the sport they played at a fantastic level. We had two wins, two losses and a lot of fun on the day.

Highlights through the day were: •Jacob P’s almost 3 pointer (had to settle for 2)• Jay A’s great intercepts and defence• Taylor F’s crashing drives in offense• Bailey H’s great dribbling, ball handling and passing• Noah E’s ability to take rebounds and turn possession around• Will L-B’s work under the hoop with reliability of shooting• Connor R’s non-stop running and dribbling to get us to the key and Jasper S directing traffic, making some excellent baskets and drawing some clever fouls

Wonderful work boys! Thanks for being great sports and leaving it all out there!

Our Year 5 boys played 5 games with fantastic team work, perseverance and determination. They won their first 4 games against Narrabeen Lakes, St Ives, Narrabeen North and another Narrabeen Lakes team.

Going into the 5th game undefeated against an undefeated Manly West (which was mainly Year 6) the boys fought hard and never gave up. They were undone by a taller and better team who went onto win the gala day.

Brad Dalton from the Basketball Association mentioned that our boys were tough competition and possibly the second best team overall despite not making the final. Considering they played mixed Years 5 and 6 and they were Year 5’s there’s a lot of potential for next year.

Special thanks to Danni Quinell for helping out as well.

Loyalty cards – promoting healthy eating in a fun way. The canteen will be introducing loyalty cards in September as part of NSW Health’s Fruit and Veg month. This initiative aims to boost fruit and vegetable intake by primary aged children.

Students will be able to pick up their loyalty cards at the canteen from Monday, 29th August. Once the children have collected ten stickers they will receive a free frozen fruit pop. Stickers are distributed in twos or fours when the following delights are purchased:

Recess boxes; a fresh piece of fruit; a hummus dip pot with carrot sticks; salad boxes or any sandwiches, burgers or wraps that contain salad.

This promotion will run until the end of Term 3.

Buy your Green Fruito-Vego before school

Friday, 26th August is Green Fruito-Vego day. If you find your crisper bare, Heights Delights can help. We are open before school each weekday and have fruit and vegetables on sale.

Our “red light” day for term three will be taking place on Thursday, 15th September.

The rebranding of our old “fun day” to “red light day” is to provide consistency with the NSW Health guidelines. The Health department uses a traffic light system that is easy for the children to understand. Green light items are ‘go’, amber light items are ‘eat in small amounts’, and red light items are restricted to two events per term because of their higher fat, sugar and/or salt content.

To place your order go to munch monitor or return your order form that will be sent out in the coming weeks.

FRUITO-VEGOGreen Fruito-Vego: Friday 26th AugustPlease send green fruits or vegetables on Friday 26th August.

Remember that Fruito-vego is as much Vego as Fruito – children really do munch just as happily on their vegetable snacks. Green Fruito-vego is a great opportunity to boost your child’s green veg intake, with the school’s support.

Try celery, lettuce, asparagus, green beans, artichokes, peas, zucchini, cucumber, green capsicum, broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, green apple, kiwi fruit, avocado, lime, grapes, honey dew melon …

Some of the many reasons to eat GREEN FOODS

Green vegetables and fruits owe their colour to the pigment chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis in plants. The darker the green, the more chlorophyll the plant contains. Chlorophyll has a very similar molecular structure to part of the haemoglobin molecule that transports oxygen in our blood, and contributes to cleansing and maintaining healthy blood.

Green vegetables also contain vitamins A, C and K and folate, and minerals such as iron, calcium and magnesium. They are also a good source of fibre.

Different shades of green indicate different micronutrients, which is why it is important to eat a wide range of fresh foods. The green colour in fruits such as kiwi fruit is also due to chlorophyll, but the distinctive electric green colour is because they also contain carotenoids, creating an orangey-yellow colour, and anthocyanins creating a blue/purple hue. The combination of these chemicals creates a blend of green, yellow, and blue rather than the forest green of a leafy vegetable like spinach.

Uniform Shop News.....|.....SUE GARRITYAs mentioned in last week’s newsletter a new style school hat will be introduced

shortly. It will be in a microfibre crush-resistant and water repellent fabric that washes well with an embroidered school emblem. The sizes are S/M and M/L with an adjustable crown cord and costs $15. The current style hat will still be available for $13.

We are also looking at replacing or improving some items of our uniform and have some samples that we would love to get some honest feedback on. This includes a new style microfibre sports jacket that could come with new matching microfibre trackpants and a school fleece jacket with a new style of collar.

Please drop in on Monday or Thursday mornings to have a look as these as well as other items such as a knitted pullover.

All suggestions, opinions and feed back (positive or negative) will be welcomed and appreciated. So if you have any ideas in regard to the uniform, now is the time to let us know. If you can”t make it in, please email the uniform shop at [email protected] with your suggestions

Look forward to hearing from you.

Y... Working Bee

The working bee is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, 10th September. A few things need doing:

• Garden Bed along Middle Oval (near Art room) – prune shrubs and weed.

• Re-planting along Bottom Oval fence, then mulch – some plants have died so we’ll obtain some more free native seedlings beforehand.

• Prune shrubs and weed along new top staircase. The P&C minutes also mentioned that there had been some garden waste dumped near here, so that can be cleaned up too.

• Clear weeds and heavily mulch area between new sandpit (bottom oval) and water tanks. Mr Brooks would like to clear this whole area and make it kid friendly.

• Make a new garden along wall just below K-2 assembly area (on LHS of stairs going down to bottom oval). This would need some logs to define garden bed and keep mulch in, some mature-ish plants to ensure survival (growing to only 1m so doesn’t obscure teachers’ view of playground), a load of garden soil mix and mulch.

• Paint the other railings up the stairs to the classrooms – I think this would just require a light sanding to roughen the old paint, then painted over. Mr Brooks even bought the paint for last W/Bee. Currently some of the railings are cream and some are white.

• Uniform Shop – Sue and Janine did not fix up the shop during the holidays as planned. So we would love some helpers to remove shelving, patch up holes, paint ceiling and walls, and put up shelving in new layout.

Please contact our Organiser Extraordinaire, Janine Ralston, at [email protected] if you can assist on the day, particularly if you have specialist skills or equipment that will make the day far more productive than if left to hacks such as me!

LanguagesWe are still sorting through a few things and hope to offer some direction next week.

P&C MeetingThe next P&C meeting starts at the earlier time of 7pm on Wednesday, 31st August in the Staffroom.

The meeting will open with a presentation from Eve Clark, Health Promotion Officer for Schools, from NSW Health. Her talk will cover the Live Life Well@ School program and she will take questions. The usual business of the P&C will follow Eve’s presentation.

Please email items you wish to place on the meeting agenda to [email protected] by 6pm this Friday. If you raise an item and cannot attend the meeting please brief another person who is attending or provide a paragraph or two so the issue can be discussed.

….We need new Ethics volunteer teachers?Ethics classes are now offered at EHPS from Kindy to Year 6 as an alternative to scripture. Due to unforeseen circumstances, at least one new volunteer teacher is needed to keep both of our Years 3/4 classes running in Term 4. Ethics classes run on Tuesdays from 9:15am to 9:45am for the infant’s school and 9:45am to 10:15am for the Primary school.

What’s involved?Primary Ethics run a free and interactive two-day course that focuses on how Ethics classes are run, why this promotes independent and respectful thinking and tips and tricks on managing a classroom of students. All volunteer teachers are then provided with the curriculum that has been designed by Dr Sue Knight, an Australian academic in philosophy and education.

Want to know more? Please join our team on Tuesday, 30th August at 10:30am at The Nook, 69 Kalang Road, Elanora Heights for an informal chat about how you can help.

Or contact the Ethics coordinator, Julie Knox, on email at [email protected].

Here is what some of our volunteers had to say:

“It is amazing to see the children’s minds open-up and to see them thinking critically about life topics”.

“Being a volunteer teacher is rewarding on so many levels. It has exceeded my expectations. The topics are informative and age appropriate and teaching my own children in the class is priceless. We discuss the topics in our household following the class, which helps me understand their world all the more. All the kids are terrific and the classes are scripted, so it’s a really easy and an enjoyable half hour”.

“I love seeing the kids discuss challenging topics that make them aware that the world is a complex, multi-layered place. From Kindergarten to Years 5 and 6, it is wonderful to witness them blossom and see them empowered by sharing their opinions and considering others”.
