Dear friends in Christ, As you are now aware, I have informed OSLC that Julie and I plan to relocate to Sandy, Utah. Julie’s last Sunday with you will likely be June 3rd. She will be living with one of our two children/grandchildren who live in Sandy and begin working in the Salt Lake City area the following week. I will move in late August or September, the exact date still to be determined. As was noted in my letter to each of you, the decision was not made in haste, but rather as a result of fervent prayer and discernment. Believe me when I say that it is never easy for us to decide that it is time to conclude a partnership in ministry and mission, especially one that has worked exceptionally well! I plan to share my final farewell in a late summer or early fall Shepherd’s Staff newsletter article. One or more Sunday sermons will be planned for the same purpose. In the meantime, I would like to encourage each of you to visit the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae as OSLC looks ahead to a new beginning and seeks to continue to be a vibrant, healthy faith community. In a recent article in The Lutheran Ambassador, I was reminded of the basic principles essential for moving forward as a congregation which St. Paul communicates for us in the four short chapters of Colossians. St. Paul instructs each and every believer to give themselves to the Lord’s service. In Colossians 3:23-24, we are reminded that if Jesus is Lord of our lives then we are to submit to the Lord’s will and desires to serve him as ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’. Our highest called in this life is to surrender to the Lordship of Christ. The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Colossians also describes passions that characterize a mature and vibrant faith community. These are passions that we invest ourselves in as we continue in the faith transformation process, growing in the fear and knowledge of the living Lord Jesus: A Passion for Jesus – Colossians 1:16-19, 3:1-3 A Passion for the Word – Colossians 1:25-29, 2:8-9 A Passion for Prayer – Colossians 4:2-4 A Passion to Bear With and Forgive Each Other – Colossians 3:13-14 A Passion to Reach the lost – Colossians 1:28, 2:1-2, 3:12-16 A Passion for Spiritual Life in the Body of Christ – Colossians 1:4, 2:2-4, 3:12-16 A Passion to be the Priesthood of Believers – Colossians 4:7-17 A Passion for Christ-Centered, Victorious Living – Colossians 2:13-15 In closing, my prayer is that we each are blessed with a personal relationship with the living Lord Jesus. My hope is that we are willing and eager to share the Good News of his saving grace with those around us. My desire is that we all remain faithful to his plan for the future. God bless and keep you, Pastor Doug “Let the peace of Christ dwell in your hearts... and be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

Summertime Greetings,

As most of you know, after nearly 8 years of shared ministry and mission in Audubon, Pastor Doug and Julie have decided to move to Sandy, Utah. This move will allow them to be living near two of their three children, all of their grandchildren, and much closer to Julie’s family who live in northern California. Pastor Doug intends to continue serving OSLC until the end of August or late September depending on a set of circumstances still to be decided.

Change is a normal part of life for individuals, families, and congregations. Change can create anxiety but also tremendous opportunities for growth. As your council president, I want to assure everyone that the church council will diligently work through this time of transition and make decisions we feel will give OSLC the best opportunity to find the right fit for our congregation. I ask you to spend time in prayer for the ministry, mission, and leadership of OSLC as we navigate through this transition process. Please also include Pastor Doug, Julie, and their families in prayer as well, as they enter the next stage of their life journey.

I encourage everyone to stay informed on the process as we move forward and ask questions if you have any. You can reach out to myself or any of the council members. The LCMC website (lcmc.net) is also a great resource that has information pertaining to pastoral transitions in congregations which may be of help as well. Philippians 4:13 states “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Feel free to contact me at any time.

Thank you. Dan Madsen, Council President [email protected]/cell: 712-790-0940

OSLC LIBRARY Do you like to read?? Or watch movies??

Take a look at the newly-organized OSLC library located in the main floor lounge! You are welcome to borrow books for as long as needed.

Please return books as soon as you are finished in order in that others may also enjoy reading them. There is a basket by the shelves to place the books you are returning.

Christian DVDs have been added to the library and are located on the shelves behind the lounge door. When borrowing DVDs, please fill out the information on the clip board and return within one week.

If you have suggestions for Christian books or DVDs to order for the library, or if you have a newer Christian book or DVD you would like to donate,

contact library organizer Joan Mortensen or the church office. During the reorganization of the library, many books were purged that were older or duplicates.

These books will be on a table by the coat racks through June 17th and you are welcome to take any books you are interested in. After June 17th the books will be donated or recycled.

A.E.D. You may notice a new addition to the church as you walk into the back of the sanctuary near

the coffee/snack kitchen. There is a sign hanging in the doorway of the sanctuary with the words “A.E.D.” on it. Just around the corner from that sign is a white box containing the actual A.E.D.

“What exactly is an A.E.D.?” you may ask. It stands for Automated External Defibrillator. This handy little device is used when someone goes into cardiac arrest. You do not have to have any formal training to use the A.E.D. as it will literally tell you what you need to do when you

open it up. Being trained in CPR is helpful but not necessary! Here is a brief explanation on how to use the A.E.D. If someone becomes unresponsive and you are unsure

if they are breathing or if they have a pulse:

1. Open the box – an alarm will sound to alert anyone medically trained to come assist.

2. Take the red zipper case out of the box and open it up – The A.E.D. is inside.

3. Open the top compartment of the A.E.D. and follow the commands of the machine.

That’s it! It’s super easy! Also included inside the bag are a pair of scissors (used to cut away a shirt) and a barrier device to assist with breathing if you are trained in CPR.

Please do not open the A.E.D. or put it on yourself or anyone else unless you suspect they may be in cardiac arrest as it can be fatal when not used as directed.

Questions, contact Patrick Hamilton

It is with thoughts of appreciation and thankfulness for her many years of service as an OSLC organist that we share with you Janice Hemmingsen’s resignation as worship organist,

effective July 31st, 2018. Janice’s dedication, reliability, professionalism and sunny disposition have been greatly appreciated by the OSLC staff and the congregation. As Janice stated in her

resignation letter “I consider it an honor and privilege to have served as an organist for this congregation”. She also shared that when she began in the 1990s she had a goal in mind as

to how long she would continue as worship organist and she has now reached that timeline goal. We appreciate that Janice plans to continue playing for funerals and nursing home vesper

and communion services when she is available. God’s Blessings to you, Janice, and thank you for your willingness to share your time and talent for so many years!

Buckle Up-Every Seat, Every Trip

This is my Father's world I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas His hand the wonders wrought

As we travel over the spring and summer months, to enjoy God’s world and spend time with family and friends, take one major step to stay safe when you are in the car. Using seat belts reduces serious injuries and deaths in crashes by about 50%. Everyone can Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short. Encourage all passengers in the car to buckle up, including those in the back seat. Parent and caregivers can Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short. This sets a good example. Make sure children are properly buckled up in a seat belt, booster seat, or car seat, whichever is appropriate. Have all children age 12 and under sit in the back seat. Never seat a child in front of an air bag. Place children in the middle of the back seat when possible, because it is the safest spot in the vehicle.

Adult Christian Education Sunday School will resume on June 3rd!

We gather in the chapel at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday mornings

During June & July, we will be viewing and discussing the God’s Not Dead movies.

Please join us in the chapel after worship and coffee for a time of fellowship and

learning.

4K for Cancer The past three years OSLC has hosted approximately

25 bike riders on their way through Iowa while participating in 4k for Cancer. What a great group of young, mostly college students they have been!

4k for Cancer is a program of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, a non-profit organization dedicated

to supplying support, awareness and education for young adults with cancer. They accomplish this

through community service, outreach, and awareness during their 4,000 mile cross-country bike ride.

This year’s team of riders will be coming through Audubon on Thursday, June 28th and OSLC will be hosting them with food and a place for them

to unroll their sleeping bags for the night. Please contact Jane Weber or the church office if you could help host this group at the church

by serving or providing food.

As Janice stated in her

to how long she would continue as worship organist and she has now reached that timeline goal. We appreciate that Janice plans to continue playing for funerals and nursing home vesper

Sanctuary Fans Have you noticed the new sanctuary ceiling fans?

The old ceiling fans were no longer working consistently and were in need of replacement.

The new fans will aid in more evenly distributing the cool air in the summer and warm air in colder months.
