“Recapture the Dream”
A Dream Come True!
2
From the Pastor
4th Sunday of Advent - B
December 24, 2017
Today’s bulletin article is like ‘part two’ of last week’s article [go to our parish website for past
bulletins] which showed how the Holy Family can
help our families have the most perfect Christmas possible - IF we try to learn from their example and strive to imitate their virtues. Sometimes a ‘double dose’ is needed to knock out a persistent problem. And just as those who have a heart transplant must be on strong medication every day for the rest of their life, those who want to have a ‘new heart’ in dealing with their family need daily, heavy-duty doses of God’s grace! Here are the orations for Masses ‘For the Family.’
Collect - For the Family
O God, in whose eternal design family life has its firm foundation, look with compassion
on the prayers of your servants and grant that, following the example
of the Holy Family of your Only Begotten Son in practicing the virtues of family life and in the
bonds of charity, we may, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards.
Though our Lord Jesus Christ … and ever. Amen.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. One reason Holy
Mother Church offers her children the example of the Saints is to give us practical role models to follow. While it is true that the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph received special graces, and that Jesus is in a unique category unto Himself, the Holy Family also faced particular situations none of us will ever be asked to accept, let alone accomplish. So instead of looking at the ‘particulars’ that make our families unlike the Holy Family, we should look at it from the perspective of the Creator of family life.
For God would never plan something without giving us the means and help we need to fulfill it. In his 2015 talk at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, Pope Francis gave three ‘simple’ virtues needed for a holy family life; they are “… being always willing to say: 1) May I?; 2) Thank you, and; 3) Pardon me [aka Will you forgive me?].” Good virtues to practice in 2018!
Prayer over the Offerings - For the Family
We offer you, Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation, humbly asking that you may establish our
families firmly in your grace and your peace. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
WE NEED GOD’S GRACE. As they say, “the more things change, the more they stay the same” - and the same is sadly true for human nature. We still fall into the ‘Original Sin’ of pride and disobedience: pride, because we insist that we know better than God; disobedience, because we refuse to live by God’s ways. Yet some pray God will ‘fix’ their ‘broken’ family … but do little, if anything, to firmly establish their family on God’s grace and peace!
Jesus never said family life - or anything else - would be easy; in fact, as He once said, “For human beings [it] is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” [Matthew 19:26] Will we use the divine directions God gives us for our own good and the good of our family … or will we try to go at it as the ‘first’ family, Adam and Eve, did: without using God’s gracious gifts?
Prayer after Communion - For the Family
Bring those you refresh with this heavenly Sacrament, most merciful Father,
to imitate constantly the example of the Holy Family of your Only Begotten Son,
so that, after the trials of this world, they may share their company for ever.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
BECOME WHAT YOU RECEIVE. The gift of the
Eucharist is, perhaps, the best tool for building or rebuilding our families. For by being properly disposed to receive Christ’s Sacred Body and Precious Blood, we have the best chance to become what we receive! And the unequaled graces of the Blessed Sacrament can empower us to do great things, things we could never do on our own, without God’s help. As we celebrate Christ’s coming to live with us 2,000 years ago, take time to receive Him anew each week in the great gift of Eucharist. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! Merry Christmas!
With God’s love and my prayers,
Very Rev. Michael J. Kreder, KHS

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Each year, people throughout the world make NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. For many they are short lived and quickly forgotten. At our BAPTISM and CONFIRMATION, we make NEW LIFE RESOLUTIONS. Our Baptismal promises are lifelong commitments to Jesus and the Church. We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are GOD’S STEWARDS - we have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received. As “GOOD STEWARDS” it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. Let us RECOMMIT OURSELVES TO THE LORD by taking the time to plan and make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle and stewardship of treasure part of our budget. “Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver.” {2 Cor. 9:7}
PARKING FOR SUNDAY AND CHRISTMAS MASSES
Just a reminder! If parked in the lot in the section with double parking, please pull all the way through so others may use the second space. We will have Auxiliary police at our Christmas Eve Masses directing cars in and out of the parking lot. Those coming for the 4:30pm and 6:00pm Christmas Eve Masses - PLEASE remember that NO cars will be allowed in the lot until cars from previous Mass have left the lot.
SECOND COLLECTION
The FIRST COLLECTION on CHRISTMAS will be for your
Christmas Gift to the Church and the SECOND
collection for your regular weekly offering. Though
some disdain this financial talk the reality is: the
Church needs your regular support and it needs your
active, physical presence, for without you and your
support, we could not ‘be Church’ or make ends
meet. As you consider your Christmas gift to your
parish, I ask you to check if your place of employment
or retirement has a “matching gift” policy; this is a
wonderful way to increase your sacrificial offering to
your church! As always, I am grateful for your
generosity, your concern and your interest.
2018 CALENDARS Thanks to the generosity of CALHOUN MANIA FUNERAL HOME (201) 939-1050 AND MACAGNA DIFFILY ONORATO FUNERAL HOME (201) 939-0098. The 2018 Calendars are available at the Front Doors of the Church.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 King David plans to build a temple to honor God. But God tells Nathan the Prophet that instead he will give David rest from his enemies, and ensure that both his house and community will be protected forever. Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27 In this letter of Paul to the Romans, he explains that the gospel reveals the mystery that had been hidden for many ages. Now it has been made known to all, so that they may believe, obey, and give glory through Jesus Christ forever. Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 The Virgin Mary is approached by the angel Gabriel, who tells her that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary is first afraid, yet shows her unquestioning faith when she simply says, “Let it be done to me as you say.”

WE ARE STILL
‘RECAPTURING THE DREAM.’
RECENT PROJECTS. In my 33rd year of
Ordained Priesthood, my 21st year as your Pastor,
and in the 6th year of our ‘new’ church, I still have
not tired or gotten bored with the often
mundane tasks of over-seeing such a large Parish
with two Schools and numerous Parish
programs. [Though I must admit: getting up
before the crack of dawn, especially in these dark
mornings, is starting to take a toll on me.]
However, with so many people actively involved
in our Parish, who so willingly give of themselves
to do so much, and with so many generous
benefactors - I cannot complain! As is my custom,
allow me to update you on what’s been going
on, what is happening now, and what, with
God’s blessing, we hope to accomplish in the
new year.
NEW ETCHED GLASS CHURCH DOORS. A
few months ago, the six doors between the
narthex and the church were replaced with
etched glass. The doors are adorned with images
of the four Evangelists: Saints Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John, and the two princely Apostles:
Saints Peter and Paul. Four have been donated;
the other two are available for memorialization;
contact the Parish Office for more information. I
will present a special bulletin insert with the
donors’ names and intentions when they are all
memorialized.
THE ACADEMY OF SAINT MARY. Almost a
year ago, the Archdiocese of Newark’s School’s
Office assumed full responsibility for the ASM.
They are now in charge of finances, hiring and
firing, the curriculum, etc., the Parish maintains
responsibility for the spiritual life and the
building and structure. Please pray for and
encourage new admissions - without which all
Catholics Schools are in danger of closing.
SAINT MARY HIGH SCHOOL. We have hired a
fulltime Admissions Director, and continue to
seek new enrollment. Gael pride is as high as
ever, and our faculty and staff are committed to
Catholic Education. All alumni should contact
Mike Sheridan [1977] to join the Development
and Alumni Association. This group has been
working hard to raise and offer scholarships - and
they need your help. The SMHS gym and
auditorium [cost: $30,000 + installation!] are
being refitted with LED lighting.
RELIGIOUS FORMATION. We are one of the
pilot Parishes for the “RENEW’ type-program, “Be
My Witness,” which was developed by ‘RENEW
INTERNATIONAL. [The ‘original’ ‘RENEW’ was
formed in our own Archdiocese back in the
1970’s.] ’ Under Mary Kay’s watch and directed
by Milissa Else, ‘these adult faith sharing groups
will be formed for Lent; watch for details.
PARKING LOT EXPANSION. Last September,
the Parish purchased another property: 99 Home
Avenue, which is adjacent to the current parking
lot. We are receiving bids to demolish the house,
clear the lot, and eventually add a few more
parking spaces. As we did last time we
purchased a property for this purpose, we will
‘stone’ it so it can be used for parking until we
more permanently make it an addition to our
desperately small parking area. Thanks to Ken,
Sheila McPherson and Bernadette Innis from
Walters, McPherson, McNeill Law Firm for their
services.
I have conceded the battle over the small pole
lights outside the church plaza; they have been
knocked down by careless drivers all too often.
The light pole by the playground area is being
replaced with a higher, stronger, LED lamp.
Lastly, I ask your prayers for me, for our great
Parish, for our Deanery 7 which I serve as Dean,
thus my ‘title’ “Very Reverend,” for all the Priests
and People of the Archdiocese of Newark, and
for His Eminence John Cardinal Tobin, who
celebrates his first anniversary as our Archbishop
on January 6, 2018. May the joy of Christmas
bring hope to all Christians suffering
discrimination or violence throughout our world,
and to our brave men and women in the military
and law enforcement who defend us against
terrorism and all threats.
Merry Christmas!
Happy New Year 2018!
Very Rev. Michael J. Kreder, KHS, Pastor

Saint Mary CCD Programs for
All School-Aged Children
Dates for Religious Formation Classes (CCD) will
be announced in the bulletin in the New Year.
Previously registered families will receive an e-
mail with directions and dates for registration for
all sessions Summer/Sunday/Wednesday.
As always, enrollment options depend
on the number of Catechists available!
Summer CCD Registration
To be admitted to this special summer ‘crash-
course,’ the family MUST attend weekly Mass and
proof of attendance is required. Our summer
program provides classes for children going into
all Grades, 1-8, in September 2018.
Fall CCD Registration
All new and returning students must register for
Sunday and Wednesday classes; to qualify for the
early registration discount, all data and fees must
be submitted before the announced deadline.
Become a Catechist or Aide
One of the best ways to learn about your
Catholic Faith is to share it with and teach it to
others; it is truly very easy with children as our
books guide you through the process. Is God
calling YOU to be a Catechist or Aide?

Marriage Preparation
Marriage plans should be made at least one year
before the wedding; couples should make NO
other plans until they meet with a Priest or
Deacon. Call the parish office for a Marriage
Policy Handbook and the required Engaged
Encounter - or Pre-Cana Conference and God’s
Plan for a Joyful Marriage - registration materials.
Parish Registration
All Roman Catholics living within our parish
boundaries or who regularly worship here
should officially register; if you did NOT receive a
Christmas mailing, you may not be registered!
Obtain a registration form from a Priest or
Deacon after Mass or during the week at the
parish office or online on our website at:
www.stmaryrutherford.org
We strongly encourage you to register, even if
you do not plan to use envelopes, so you can be
on our mailing list. Only registered members of
the parish, who fulfill all other canonical [Church
Law] requirements are eligible to obtain Sponsor
[Godparent] Certificates, letters of
recommendation or other documentation.
Baptismal Preparation Class
Expectant parents should call the parish office
during pregnancy to register for the mandatory
Pre-Baptism Class. Godparents are strongly
encouraged to attend, and others are welcome.
Upon registration, a Parish Baptismal Policy
Booklet is sent to you to read before choosing
godparents or attending the class. Be sure your
proposed sponsor fulfills all requirements before
asking them; we strictly follow all mandatory
Church requirements in determining a
godparent’s or sponsor’s eligibility.
Godparent [Sponsor] Requirements
Church law states that Godparents/Sponsors must:
* be a Baptized and Confirmed Catholic who
attends weekly Mass and receives Eucharist
* be at least 16 years of age [exceptions possible]
* NOT be one of the parents
* lead a moral life in keeping with Church teaching,
and be a good Catholic role model
* if married, be married according to Church law
* be a registered member of their own current
parish from which they must obtain an eligibility
certificate; we can only give eligibility certificates
to those registered in our parish.
Since only one Catholic Godparent is required, a
baptized member of another Christian church [but
not a Catholic or former Catholic] may serve as a
Christian Witness. Since Godparents renew their
baptismal promises during the Rite of Baptism, a
non-baptized person cannot serve in this role.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
[RCIA]
To become a Roman Catholic or complete your
Initiation into the Church, join the RCIA!
Through weekly sessions, non-Christian adults
are prepared for Baptism, Confirmation & First
Eucharist and baptized non-Catholics for
Confirmation & First Eucharist, which occurs at
Easter. We also prepare Adult Catholics for First
Eucharist and/or Confirmation. For more info,
contact Mary Kay Benjamin. Pray for our
Catechumens, Sachiko Niiya and Amy Sun, slated
for Baptism in 2019, and our Candidates, who
are already Baptized and will be fully initiated
this Easter: David Dombrowski, Steve Martinez,
Rosenny Pena and Raymondy Ramothibe.
Pastoral Care of the Sick and Dying
Contact the Catholic chaplain via the hospital’s
Pastoral Care Office upon admission; chaplains
are forbidden by law from viewing hospital
rosters, so you must contact them. Parish
ministers try to visit area hospitals; if you or a
loved one is hospitalized, call the parish office
and give the patient’s name, hospital, room
number and other pertinent information.
Altar Guild/Church Cleaners
A number of wonderful parishioners offer their
services each week to keep our church looking as
God’s House should look. As you can imagine,
the work is never done! To join and assist them,
leave your name and phone number at the Parish
Office: Attn: Altar Guild.

Divorce & Remarriage
Annulments & Declarations of Nullity
Are you confused about Church teaching on
divorce, annulment and remarriage? A VALID
marriage must be freely, truthfully entered into
by a couple who knows each other as best as
possible and intend to fulfill the ideals of
marriage. If the bride or groom is CATHOLIC, the
marriage MUST be performed in a CATHOLIC
church, by a VALID CATHOLIC PRIEST or
DEACON, according to CATHOLIC rites or with
EXPLICIT PERMISSION elsewhere and/or by
another officiant with permission. If a Catholic is
married in any other way, that marriage may be
INVALID and may be ‘con-validated’ by a Priest or
Deacon – IF there are no invalidating factors like
a previous valid marriage. Catholics in invalid
marriages may not receive Eucharist or be
Godparents, but they are NOT excommunicated.
An invalid marriage may also be declared NULL if
it did not take place properly; the fee for a
Declaration of Nullity, usually granted quickly, is
$75. Necessary documentation: a copy of the
current marriage license, a new copy of each
Catholic’s baptismal certificate, the proper forms
completed by a Priest/Deacon, and fee.
When a valid marriage ends in civil divorce,
divorced or separated Catholics MAY receive
Holy Communion, serve as sponsors, etc. Their
status only changes if they enter another
marriage before the previous marriage is
officially declared NULL or is ANNULED.
An annulment does NOT say a marriage never
took place, which denies reality; it declares a
marriage non-binding since it was not properly
entered into: one or both parties were not free,
truthful or lacked full awareness of self or the
other; the ideals of marriage were not
understood; etc. A marriage performed by a
valid Priest or Deacon [not a so-called ‘rent-a-
priest’ - usually a former Priest who hires himself
out for an exorbitant fee!] or the marriage
between two non-Catholics is presumed VALID
and needs a CATHOLIC ANNULMENT to be
dissolved. The fee for an annulment is $550;
financial difficulty will not stop the process,
which usually takes at least a year. Please speak
to a Priest or Deacon for clarification. Every
Catholic in a broken marriage is strongly urged
to seek guidance on this important issue.
For more info, speak to a Priest or Deacon or
contact the Marriage Tribunal at 973-497-4145
or the archdiocesan website, www.rcan.org. In
Christian charity, please pass this info on to those
who need the truth, who need the facts, but who
do not need hearsay, misinformation or other
well-intended, though often harmful, help.
Strongly encourage those in these situations to
speak to a Priest or Deacon.

luck supper, fun & games, magician & music,

year’s palms, which you are invited to bring back
in February, will be distributed during:

12:00 noon - 7:00 PM
and during a Liturgy of the Word
for Children at 4:00 PM
Is God Remembered in Your Will?
While concern for our own needs and the needs
of others may keep us from tithing a full 10%
now, most should be able to reach this goal in
their will. Will God and your parish be
remembered when you are gone … in your will?
Dates of Easter & Ash Wednesday
Easter is [roughly] the 1st Sunday after the 1st full
moon after the vernal equinox or arrival of
spring. The earliest possible Easter date is March
22, which most recently occurred in 1573, 1668,
1761 & 1818; it will next occur in 2285 - which
none of us will be here to see. The latest possible
Easter date is April 25, which most recently
occurred in 1546, 1641, 1736, 1886 & 1943; it
will next occur in 2038. Once Easter is set, we
know Ash Wednesday’s date. The earliest Ash
Wednesday can be is February 4; its latest date is
March 10. Now you know!
