Why has Stericycle been such a remarkable growth story?
A lot of the credit can be traced to the vision Mark Miller, now Executive Chairman, set for Stericycle when he was CEO. He insisted that we were not simply a waste company, that we were a business services provider. This changed how we thought about ourselves and how we presented Stericycle to customers.
We asked what else could we offer. That thinking led to other services like our Steri•SafeSM℠Compliance Program which simplified things like bloodborne pathogen training and made the complexities of OSHA compliance easier. While a customer may have started with a waste contract, being highly rated on one service became our passport to doing more business. That built long-term relationships and customer loyalty.
Our acquisition strategy is also significant. We’ve completed over 365 acquisitions. Our aggressive approach has added tremendous infrastructure and strategically strengthened our geographic footprint and capabilities. Our team is adept at buying niche businesses and turning them into national enterprises.
Acquisitions are still only half the story. You need organic growth. Our team has successfully complemented M&A activity with strategic service innovations. This has always allowed us to do more business with an expanding customer base. Additionally, our pursuit of small customers like doctors and dentists or small retailers has been a key strategy.
How did Stericycle go from medical waste to product recalls to communications and environmental solutions?
We are passionate about finding ways to provide more value for customers and building long-term relationships. Our first real expansion involved a suite of safety and compliance services for our healthcare customers. That didn’t emerge from a waste truck or a processing plant but a desire to do more for customers.
That led to other logical extensions like our Sharps Management Service (safely disposing of needles and syringes) and pharmaceutical (or Rx) waste. These are other highly regulated waste categories, a competency squarely in our wheelhouse.
With Rx waste, there is a return component since pharmacies can obtain credit for returning expired drugs. Being experienced in logistics, getting into returns was a logical extension. And returns led to recalls since the service capabilities are similar. Today, we are the leader in healthcare, food/beverage and consumer product recalls. There is an enormous call center component to this type of work. That led to our expansion into Communication Solutions, first for our healthcare customer base and then for other industries.
Environmental Solutions was another logical extension given the increasingly strict regulatory environment. Rx waste was just the beginning. We’ve grown into a comprehensive hazardous waste provider with a wide range of environmental services and clients. While at first glance our offerings may seem disparate, they actually fit quite well together.

What is one thing you wish more people knew about Stericycle?
All the good we do as a company. Stericycle has a tremendous impact on the public that isn’t always obvious. For example, we handle over 1 billion pounds of medical waste every year. Removing infectious material safely on this scale provides an enormous public service in terms of improving overall public health and safety. Or take our communication centers...we handle well over 100,000 live conversations every day. The vast majority are linking patients and doctors, so Stericycle is a critical conduit to human health.
Does the company want to create balance between healthcare and commercial customers?
We don’t look at it quite that way. Once we have a capability, we don’t want to limit ourselves to a single industry. Besides, boundaries are changing and lines are blurring. Take medical waste. It’s no longer generated exclusively by healthcare facilities. Big box retailers and drug store chains are building health clinics in their stores.
It really doesn’t matter to us if a customer is a hospital, a retailer, a veterinary clinic, or a commercial manufacturer. We look at the services we can offer and ask where they are needed. If we can leverage a service over more customers, we will take that advantage. We always want to be creating more value and exploring new gateways for growth.
What characteristic best defines Stericycle?
Our entrepreneurial spirit. It’s the bedrock of our culture. Even though today we are considered a large company, in many ways we still think and operate like a much smaller one. We are still nimble. We empower our people to get things done and work at a rapid pace.
What is your perspective on corporate culture?
I spend a lot of time focusing on culture. I want Stericy-cle to be thought of as a great place to work because I love working here. As we keep getting bigger, it’s important to make even more of a conscious effort to promote and sustain our culture. We want our team members to feel recognized and a part of something very special, where they can make great things happen.
Stericycle’s successes are because of the people who work here. If you get right down to it, business is personal. When you look at companies that are wildly successful, it’s because they build strong relationships, both externally and internally.
What lies ahead in Stericycle’s future?
We’ll continue to provide phenomenal value to customers, shareholders and team members. We’ll continue to grow and innovate. I anticipate we’ll be in a lot more countries, providing even more services. Will we be everywhere? No. We will be disciplined and selective, picking countries where we see a strategic fit.
We are well positioned in service lines with long runways for growth, and we want to take advantage of the opportunities in front of us.

U.S., UK, Ireland, and Latin AmericaOur Sharps Management Service is helping England’s National Health Service (NHS) achieve its mandate to reduce CO2 by 34% by 2020. Our puncture-proof, recyclable containers reduce the risk of needlesticks while offering significant environmental benefits. For each Bio SystemsTM
container used, up to 600 single-use containers are diverted from incineration. For a typical 1,200-bed hospital, that can decrease CO2 by 11.5 tons annually. In many of our global markets, this service adds important and immediate value in terms of safety and sustainability.
SUSTAINABLE MARITIME SOLUTIONS
U.S. and Latin America Stericycle expanded its portfolio of environmental services to create Sustainable Maritime Solutions. Ships, tankers, and cruise lines must adhere to strict safety standards and requirements for materials crossing international borders. Beyond providing proper waste management and compliance, we are helping customers in these industries with maintenance of national phytosanitary environmental controls (agriculture and pathogens) and compliance with rules for no pollution of the sea. Many of these solutions are being adapted to the freight, rejected cargo and airline industries.
CLINICAL SERVICES
Canada, UK, Ireland, Spain, and PortugalClinical Services, our international health and safety compliance program, was launched to fill a critical gap in regulatory support for individual medical and dental practices. Smaller healthcare providers face the same regulatory requirements as hospitals, but typically lack in-house health and safety experts. Our offerings provide a comprehensive suite of integrated, cost effective products and services to help ensure patient and employee safety as well as regulatory compliance. We designed Clinical Services with a modular architecture so the program is easily scalable, adaptable and transportable to other countries and regulatory requirements.
DOSIMETRY SERVICE
Spain and Portugal Our Dosimetry Service is an example of a Clinical Services program expansion. Many countries have specific and stringent requirements for radiological protection. Doctors and dentist offices and some industrial clients must track daily exposure levels from equipment and absorption rates in individual workers and the office environment. These businesses have to report back consistently to a regulatory body. Stericycle’s suite of services, including dosimeter tracking devices, training and other radiological protection resources, is providing education and critical data that keeps employees from harm and thousands of small businesses safe and compliant.
REGULATED MEDICAL WASTE
All Stericycle MarketsAs a global leader in medical waste management, Stericycle has the expertise to support the most rigorous regulatory environments and reduce the management burden on our customers. We recently broadened our regulated medical waste service in Asia, which has some of the strictest regulatory environments. Stericycle is helping customers in Korea and Japan manage highly complex requirements concerning storage, transport, and treatment of regulated medical waste. Based on local requirements for waste tracking, Stericycle can even provide RFID traceable containers to ensure full compliance.
