First, I would like to thank Assistant Chief Al “Uncle Al” Materasso, who retired as the Executive Officer of the Detective Bureau, for swearing me in as President. I would also like to personally congratulate Emmanuel Rossi on his retirement from the New York City Police Department; he will truly be missed my all. In addition to members being missed, the person the entire association will truly miss is our Brooklyn Financial Secretary, Anthony Di Carlo. His passing has truly created a void within this association and the entire Police Department. Anthony was the true epitome of what it means to be a great man and he was the embodiment of what the Columbia Association is all about. This year the Columbia Association’s Lt. Joseph Petrosino Woman-of-the-Year is Deputy Chief Martine Materasso. Deputy Chief Materasso and her family have been proud members and supporters of our organization. She is the first female Uniformed Member of Service to receive this award. In addition, Martine and her father, Al, are the first “parent/child” to both receive this honor. Our 2019 Businessman Award will be presented to Mr. Douglas J. Licari of Mass Mutual Financial Group / Blue Ocean Wealth Solutions. Mr. Licari is a huge supporter of this organization and all law enforcement. The Patrolman Philip W. Cardillo Humanitarian Award will be presented to Mrs. Lisa Tuozzolo. Lisa is the proud wife of slain NYPD Sergeant Paul J. Tuozzolo. Our Italian-American Achievement Award will be presented to Bobby Valentine, who both played for, and managed, the New York Mets Major League Baseball Club. We will also be honoring the commitment and bravery of four members of our organization. Sergeant Pietro Ferrante will be the recipient of the Lieutenant Mario Biaggi Award for Valor. Detective Michael Lollo will be the recipient of the Police Office Michel Melchionna Award and finally, the Police Office Arthur Pelo Award for Valor will be awarded to Police Officers Gary Tagliaferri and Marco Marrone. This year the Columbia Association will be introducing two new awards: The International Man-of-the-Year Award, which will be given to the Honorable Giuseppe Cuomo, Mayor of Sorrento, Italy, and the Founder’s Award, which will be presented to Police Officer Daniel Tirelli, Recording Secretary of the NYC Police Benevolent Association and Mr. Albert Barrette of Inner Imaging. This year’s Dinner Dance will be held on May 10, 2019 at our new location, Russo’s On the Bay in Howard Beach, NY.
