I am extremely excited about this new VBS TreeHouse adventure. Jeff Slaughter and the VBS team have built this VBS curriculum and music program to plant and grow the theme verse Joshua 23:14 (NIrV) in every child who comes to your VBS or Backyard Kids Club. Instilling God’s promises into each child lays the groundwork for the life-long and exciting adventure of seeing God’s promises fulfilled in their lives.

As I am writing this letter, my own church just announced how many kids made decisions to come to Christ and move from death to life through Jesus Christ at Backyard Bible Clubs held in neighbor-hoods around our church. This kind of outreach to the communities around our churches is vital to sharing the Gospel with a hurting and confused world.

The kids at this year’s VBS/Backyard Kids Club will journey through different TreeHouse lessons to learn about God’s Promises of Love, Hope, Salvation, Provision and Power. I can’t wait to hear the sto-ries from your kid’s ministry and how lives were changed from the encounters with God’s promises!

God is not only the King of kings and Lord of lords, but He is the King of creativity and adventure. I can barely comprehend how God thought up the planets, stars, mountains, oceans, animals, and you and me. He is so creative and has designed us to be a part of His great adventure for our lives. It is our prayer at Brentwood VBS Kidz that every child will answer the call to Christ through the VBS Tree-House adventure.

Each year there are things that make the VBS curriculum I am working on particularly special to me. Usually, the lessons I am writing about are ones that the Lord wants to reinforce in my life as well.

This year I am completely amazed, humbled, honored, overwhelmed, and extremely grateful to tell you that the “Jeff Slaughter VBS TreeHouse” marks my 20th anniversary of composing and choreographing VBS music! Twenty years…it does not seem possible! I know some of you have been on this journey with me since 1997’s “Wild and Wonderful Good News Stampede.”

I had no idea that a random phone call I received in August of that year asking if I was interested in writing VBS music would completely alter the course of my life. Nor, could I have imagined all the incredible, miraculous adventures the Lord had in store for me. According to statistics, there have been almost 50 million people who have sung these songs through the years! There are no words to describe the gratitude that I hold in my heart for the chance to do something that I have abso-lutely loved for so many years!

Thank you for choosing to “hang out” with me in the “TreeHouse” this year! I think it’s totally prophetic that we are celebrating God’s promises of love, hope, salvation, provision and power this year. I’ve been writing songs about these promises for 20 years, and I am still learning that I have a lot to learn about the depth of each one. I pray that as you begin to prepare to pass these lessons and songs on to your kids that the Lord would draw you into a special, secret place (your spiritual treehouse) and reveal more about each one of these promises to you.

Welcome to Jeff Slaughter’s VBS TreeHouse where imagination and adventure meet the truth of God’s Promises! Laying the foundation with the declaration from Joshua 23:14 (NIrV) as our theme verse, we will explore God’s Promises of LOVE, HOPE, SALVATION, PROVISION, and POWER each day through Bible Study, Small Group, Worship, Missions, Craftivities, Games and more. Every moment in VBS TreeHouse is designed to remind kids that God’s Promises + YOU = Adventure! And that the ultimate adventure is found in salvation through Jesus Christ.

Each day we will take an adventure into an extreme Bible story and dig into God’s Extraordinary Prom-ises. We will learn how God’s promises of love, hope, salvation, provision and power equip us to live a life that is exciting and full of adventure!

Your students will encounter the gospel in a clear way, and they will be challenged to deepen their faith and understanding of God’s Promises as they learn to apply them to their own lives.

OPENING RALLY & THAT’S A WRAPThis is the VBS opening and closing large group time. Gather each day to worship together, hear the theme for the day, watch the drama (if you’re incorporating that into your VBS), play Jeff’s daily teach-ing video and pray God’s blessings on the day. We encourage you to incorporate the Bible lesson here in your large group time as well. This starts everyone into the VBS day having heard the main story. From here you can send kids into any of the VBS stations, and they will be ready to learn and apply.

That’s A Wrap gives you an opportunity to end the day with worship, celebrate the day’s Promise and sent the kids out with a blessing.

BIBLEEach day in Bible the kids encounter an extreme story of God’s love, hope, salvation, provision and power. Consider presenting the Bible story with your hosts in your “Opening Rally” so that everyone hears the story together before they head out to their VBS stations.

SMALL GROUPDuring Small Group kids will work with the VBS theme verse, search God’s Word for promises and learn how to apply them to their own lives. In this station the kids will really dig in to God’s Word.


MUSICIn this break out session, VBS kids will learn and worship with songs that proclaim the truths of God’s Promises. You may work on learning the full musical or simply teach the daily songs. Choose the option that works best for your program. To learn the music and motions, join Jeff on Disc #1 — the Ultimate TreeHouse DVD. (The Drama is found on the Digital Curriculum disc in the Ultimate Media Kit, or online at bentwoodbenson.com)

MISSIONSWe are so excited to partner with Blood:Water and The Walter Project for our VBS Missions emphasis. The work of Blood:Water is something that Jeff Slaughter is passionate about. The Walter Project is about raising awareness and funding to bring safe, clean water to people in great need in Sub-Saharan Africa. Blood:Water has generously given permission for The Walter Project resource material to be included in the director’s manual. You’ll find everything you need — from information on registering your church’s campaign, to ordering your jerry cans, to daily lessons and games — right in the Missions section of this manual. You’ll even find a Craftivities tie-in when the kids build and staff a Lemon:Aid stand to raise money for The Walter Project. You can find out more about Blood:Water’s mission and history by visiting bloodwater.org, but everything you need for The Walter Project is included in the Ultimate VBS Treehouse Kit. CRAFTIVITIESVBS TreeHouse craftifities have been specifically chosen to highlight the truth of the God’s Promises. Each activity will give children freedom to express their own creativity. The craftivities are designed to be reminders of the truth and tools with which the kids can share those truths and stories with others. They can be kept as personal reminders or given as gifts as we proclaim that God’s Promises + YOU = Adventure!

EXTRAS: SNACKS, GAMES AND MORETargeted snacks and games are founded in the EXTRAS section of the manual. The snack options are by and large healthy alternatives that also allow the kids to be creative. A list of great team building games are provided for you so that you can pair them with the lessons as you choose. If you have a great game that the kids always expect to be on the VBS schedule, by all means include it. In addition, Extras is filled with resources that you and your team will use to make each VBS lesson exciting and meaningful.

PRESCHOOLThe daily preschool lessons are self-contained lessons that include everything you need to have a suc-cessful preschool class. All you need to do is add enthusiastic and loving teachers, a few age appro-priate toys for free play and your awesome preschool kids, and you’re all set for VBS TreeHouse fun!


LEADING KIDS TO CHRISTUltimately, the reason we spend hours and weeks in preparation for an event like VBS is to lead chil-dren into a relationship with Jesus Christ. We want to see lives changed for Christ. Here are some effective ways to share the Good News with kids.

Present the steps to salvation in Jesus. Feel free to use the method you are most comfortable with. Sug-gestions are Wordless Book (colors), A-B-C (Admit, believe, confess), Romans Road, or an Evange-cube.

You may use the following discussion guide (based on the Romans Road.) Open your Bible to the various verses as you read them to emphasize that this is God’s Word, not just yours.

• We have all made bad choices. The Bible calls this sin and says that ALL have sinned. (Read Romans 3:23.) Ask the kids to call out sins. Write them on a whiteboard with a red marker (or on a white piece of paper with a red crayon). If they only say “big” sins like murder, guide them to “kid-sized” sins like disobedience, lying, cheating, disrespect for parents, being unkind or selfish, etc. Don’t get stuck here, but make a simple comment that to God, sin is sin – there are no big and little sins.

• Ask — How many of you have had to suffer some kind of consequence for making a bad choice? Let one or two volunteers share. (Being grounded for disobedience, etc.) What does the Bible say is the consequence for sin? Uh-oh! This is bad!! Romans 6:23(a) — When you sin, the pay you get is death.

• There is no price we as humans can pay for sin because we do not have a holy payment to make. Who is the only one who could make the perfect payment for our sin? (Jesus) How did He make that payment? (By dying on the cross, shedding His blood.) Romans 5:9 — The blood of Christ has made us right with God.

• Jesus paid the price for everyone, but each one must accept the payment as his own. The rest of Romans 6:23 says, But God gives you the gift of eternal life because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done.

• In Romans 10:9, the Bible says, “Say with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord.’ Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Then you will be saved.”

• Ask — Do you believe that Jesus is God’s Son? Do you believe He died on the cross to pay for your sin? Do you believe Jesus rose again and is alive.

• “Jesus is Lord,” means Jesus is the boss. Ask — Are you ready to let Jesus be your Savior and your boss?

• 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells what happens when you ask Jesus to be your Savior: Anyone who believes in Christ is a new creation. The old is gone! The new has come!

• Hold up a piece of red cellophane paper in front of the whiteboard where you wrote the sin list. The words written in red should disappear. Comment — After you ask Jesus to be your Savior, God sees you covered by the blood of Jesus, and your sins are forgiven, washed clean!

Remind the kids that God loves them just as they are. They don’t have to “clean up their act” before they come to Him. They don’t have to “do” anything because salvation is a free gift that you only have to accept. Remember Romans 6:23 — When you sin, the pay you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done.


Give the kids the opportunity to respond to God’s offer of a new life through Jesus. Give each a copy of the “Response Card” (in Extras) and a pencil. Ask them to spend a quiet moment reading the card and praying about their decision. Collect the cards.

Take the opportunity to lead the children in prayer and give them a chance to accept Jesus as their Savior. Tell them they can echo your prayer if they want to. (Pause after each line.) Dear God, I know that You made me and that You love me with a forever love. I know that I have made wrong choices and that I am a sinner. Since I am a sinner, I cannot be close to You or have eternal life with You unless I believe that Jesus is Your Son and that He died on the cross to pay the price for my sin. I believe Jesus rose from the dead and is alive. I believe that, so I am asking Jesus be my Savior. I want Jesus to be my best friend and my boss. Jesus, please come into my heart, forgive me of my sin and make me a child of God. Thank You for hearing my prayer and giving me new life in Jesus. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!

Celebrate! 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells what happens when you ask Jesus to be your Savior: Anyone who believes in Christ is a new creation. The old is gone! The new has come!

As a new creation in Christ, there are some things you can do that will help you grow strong in your faith.• Be baptized — following Jesus’ command to be baptized (Matthew 28:19-20) is a step of obedience. It does not save you; it is a statement to the world that you have made the choice to make Jesus your Lord.

• Go to a church where you can make Christian friends and worship.

• Read your Bible. This is very important way that God will speak to you.

• Pray — being quiet before God, talking to Him and listening for Him to speak in your heart is one way you get to know Him better.

• Tell others about your new life in Christ.

VBS TREEHOUSE SCHEDULING BLUEPRINT

OPTION A - 3 HOUR PROGRAMThis station rotation encourages you to present the main Bible story with the two hosts to the entire VBS during Opening Rally. The advantage of this is that everyone starts the day hearing the Bible story and the memory verse, then the other stations reinforce those truths and allow the kids to dig deeper and apply it.

SMALL GROUP (25 MINUTES)Dig into the Theme Verse, review the Bible story, apply truths, and discover God’s Promises

MUSIC (WORSHIP) (25 MINUTES)Learn the Song of the Day and apply the truths of our memory verses. It is proven that music and mo-tions aid in remembering things. Put this to use by teaching the high-energy songs and the motions.

MISSIONS (25 MINUTES)Use The Walter Project material included in the curriculum guide to learn about Blood:Water, the need for clean water in Sub-Saharan Africa and how you can make a difference. If you choose to connect with another ministry (global or local) substitute your own materials and activities during this time.

CRAFTIVITIES (25 MINUTES)Give your students an opportunity to express themselves artistically while applying the truth of God’s Word.

SNACKS/GAMES (25 MINUTES)Work off some energy by choosing a high impact game found in Extras, then recharge and refresh at the Snack station with themed snacks that reinforce truths and allow for creativity.

Notes:*Enlist a team to video kids in various stations early in the day. Show the video at the end of each day. Use the footage to make a longer video for your Family Day at the end of the week. OPTION B - 3 HOUR PROGRAMThis rotation schedule features a shorter more traditional Opening Rally. In this schedule Bible is a separate station in the rotation. Using this schedule will mean that some students attend Bible (hear the main Bible story) after they have gone to other stations. If you choose this option, make sure that all of your station leaders are given the lesson overview from the Bible section, so they can lead the children well. The station content is the same as Option A except that Craftivities and Snack/Games have a reduced station time.

VBS THEME DAYS AND DRESS UP DAYS Many churches feature dress up days for the kids and their leaders. You may have some favorites that have become traditions at your VBS. If so, include those. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Have a photo booth in the lobby or at your check-in station. Kids can get their pictures made in their costumes. Advertise your theme days in your promotional materials. Have a reminder list available on Day 1 at registration.

Note: If any of your theme days or activities feature water events, please notify your parents so kids will be dress appropriately and parents will be prepared.

DAY 1 - VBS T-SHIRT DAYSell VBS TreeHouse T-shirts ahead of time (at pre-registration) and ask the kids to wear them to the first day of VBS. Make sure you have extras available to purchase at registration on Day 1.

DAY 2 - BUILDER DAYAsk the kids to come dress in their version of a construction worker or builder. Provide hard hats, safety glasses, work gloves as add ons to their costumes.

DAY 3 - DECADE DAYPick a favorite decade — 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or assign decades to different grades. Challenge them and offer prizes for the most participants in a particular grade.

DAY 4 - TWIN DAY/DRESS ALIKE DAYAsk the kids to work with a friend to organize “matching” twin costumes for them to wear. As an alter-native, call it Dress Alike Day and give small groups or grades a theme for the day.

DAY 5 - CRAZY HAIR DAYLet creativity explode with Crazy Hair Day.


DAILY COLOR THEMESAnother way to unify VBS is to ask for a particular color to be worn each day to match the theme of the day. If you choose this option, be sure to provide extra shirts, swatches of cloth or bandanas for kids who are new or for those who forgot. Advertise your color days in your promotional materials. Have a reminder list available on Day 1 at registration.

IDEAS FOR DECORATING VBS STATIONSIn addition to the ideas included here, be sure to visit the BrentwoodBenson Pinterest boards for more ideas. Each station takes place in a unique room of the VBS TreeHouse. With that in mind, each station is named after a room in a “house.” Have lots of fun with these ideas and feel free to change them up and adapt them to work best in your space. These “rooms” can be extreme and elaborate, or they can be simple involving more imagination.

Wooden pallets will make great easy walls for the rooms of your treehouse. Just be sure that if the kids will be touching them, that you sand them down, and counter-sink any nails or staples.

OPENING RALLY AND THAT’S A WRAP - MAIN TREEHOUSEUse resources from Brentwood Benson to help set the theme. You can set your Opening Rally on the ground with your “treehouse” above you. This way you can leave lots to the imagination. Suspend a tire swing, rope ladder, swinging bridge, climbing net, and more. Use a big tree trunk at center with a treehouse platform that can be used by members of your team. Use different colors of green paper or balloons in different shades of green to represent leaves among the branches.

BIBLE - GROUND LEVEL AT THE MAIN TREEHOUSEThe Bible story takes place at ground level of the treehouse as the hosts talk about building and add-ing on to the treehouse. If you’re not doing this in your Opening Rally space, you can decorate the station for Bible on a smaller scale, but with the same ideas as the Opening Rally space.

SMALL GROUP - THE LIBRARYLine this room with wooden pallets and a book shelf with lots of interesting books and lots of Bibles, or stacks of books. You will need tables and chairs or floor space on which you can work. The focal point in the room will be your Promise Display. (See Small Group for more details.)

MISSIONS - THE LOFT Keep the TreeHouse theme going with wooden pallets, planks and beams. If you’re showing the videos in this breakout station, display your AV equipment in a fun way. You’ll also need tables or floor space to do some of the activities. Since this is “the loft” give the space a feeling of being up high in the tree by bringing the ceiling low. Large pieces of green fabric or varying shades of paper can accomplish this. You may also consider suspending white and blue balloons to represent Walter the Water Drop. Display the jerry cans that you ordered from Blood:Water.

MUSIC - THE STUDIODecorate the walls this space with craft paper. Draw or paint faux boards on the paper. Decorate with instruments and equipment. Add records and CDs for a retro feel to the space. If you use paper to decorate the walls, you can let the kids write on the walls as the week progresses.

CRAFTIVITIES - THE WORKSHOPUse brown craft paper, boards, or wooden pallets to set the tone in this space. Set it up like a craft workroom or a wood working shop. You will need tables and chairs for the kids. Have a display area for the sample crafts and a space to hold crafts that are finished by the kids. String up clothes line or rope. As kids finish their crafts, hang them from the line to get them up and out of the way. Make this space colorful and inviting to spark the imagination.


SNACK - THE KITCHENKeep “the kitchen” rustic and simple. Wooden pallets, boards and craft paper will help you define the space. Use fun elements like red checked table coverings (cloth or plastic), baskets, crates, and more to fill the space. Since the kids “build” a lot of the snacks set the space up to feature a “food bar” or plan for enough supplies to have a set up for each table in the room. Use serving trays to help you with this. Don’t forget to decorate the ceiling!

GAMES - THE GYM OR THE YARDDefine your space with game and/or sporting equipment if you place “The Gym” in the treehouse. A great alternative is to think about your game space as being in “The Yard” where your tree is growing — or actually take Games outside! Many of the games require open space for running and group movement.
