OUR PLAN TOREOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
Published August 9, 2020
Dear Members of Our Community,
This following plan represents months of thoughtful work by faculty, administrators, Trustees, parents and other community professionals who had to adapt to changing government regulations, differing reports on COVID-19’s spread and evolving medical recommendations. At this moment, our understanding is that:
• COVID-19 is a potentially life-threatening virus that must be taken seriously; long term implications are still unclear.
• Local spread is most relevant for our decision-making. Macro statistics, good or bad, are not necessarily relevant to our campus.
• Effective control measures such as mask-wearing, strict cleaning protocols and hygiene, physical distancing and increased air circulation can help prevent the virus’ spread.
• The pandemic is dynamic and evolving. Policies and practices are under continuous refinement. Most decisions need to be revisited continually.
In developing our plan, our goal has been to design safety protocols for in-person experiences that we can reasonably expect to generate zero on-campus transmissions. To achieve that goal, we must assume that the virus is on campus. Therefore, we must interact in a way that avoids “close contact” as defined by Tri-County Health Department guidelines. If every member of our community is
diligent and does their part, we believe we can
execute our safety protocols with 100% compliance. Non-compliance will have consequences. Through regular health compliance audits, we will learn and adapt as we go, resulting in even safer operations.
I want to thank our faculty and staff who have prepared for classes under the shroud of uncertainty, not knowing which classes they would be asked to teach and whether they would teach in-person, online or in some combination of the two.
It is important to reiterate that a safe return to campus requires each of you, our families, to be diligent, to follow safe health practices at home, to partner with us in sharing information, and to support and help enforce the rules and regulations set forth in this plan. The health and safety of our teachers and staff depends on your commitment. Thank you, in advance, for agreeing to this partnership.
Also, know that we have had to reinvent and re-envision every aspect of what it means to “do school.” Please be patient, forgiving and kind as we navigate this new world together in the interest of our most important constituencies: students, employees and their families.

• Enacted policies and protocols that prioritize the health of both students and the teachers and staff who support them.
• Established a Medical Advisory Board, hired a full-time school nurse and brought in additional resources for our community.
• Will comply fully with Tri-County Health Department and Colorado governments’ health and safety guidelines.
• Are collaborating with our peers at local public schools and leading independent schools in Colorado and nationally to learn best practices for reopening schools safely and equitably.
• Will provide WIFI hot spots and other resources free of charge so students who choose to attend school online have access to high quality synchronous and asynchronous education.
AT KENT DENVER, WE BELIEVE:Children should be in school. In addition to growing
intellectually, they are happier, emotionally healthier and more physically fit when they attend school in person.
Jobs should be sustained, whenever possible. Our teachers, staff and partners—whom we believe to be the best in their fields—have contributed much, and there is so much more they want to do for our community. Their families, our school community and society at-large benefit when they are able to work.
Highly motivated students should be able to attend
our school, regardless of their economic situation.
The COVID-19 pandemic increased divisions in our society. We intend to sustain, and hopefully build, our financial aid program to help close those gaps.

ON-CAMPUS OR ONLINE? HOW WE DECIDE
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
Kent Denver will move to online instruction if local or state health officials determine that the community transmission rates are too high to conduct in-person school safely. These rates and trends are determined by a number of factors, including overall positive cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations.
We will also move to online instruction if Tri-County Health Department determines that exposures at our school have likely resulted in positive cases within our school community.
Our many preventative health practices are designed specifically to prevent this particular scenario.
In addition, we reserve the right to move to an online teaching environment at any time if we determine that it is in the best interest of the health of our employees and our students to do so.

We are fortunate to
have a community in
which members agree
to their part to keep
each other safe. In
spite of our collective
efforts, a COVID-19
case may occur.
Here is how we
will respond:
The student/employee will remain home for the duration of their illness. They must receive a negative COVID-19 test before they return to campus.
The student or employee will quarantine for 14 days after known exposure and be asymptomatic, or take a COVID-19 test three days after exposure and receive a negative result.
1. The student/employee will remain home for the duration of their illness. They must receive a negative COVID-19 test before they return to campus.
2. Our school nurse will determine if there was an exposure to the student/employee’s cohort based on Tri-County Health Department’s definition.* If exposure occurred, members of the cohort will quarantine for 14 days after known exposure and be asymptomatic, or take a COVID-19 test three days after exposure and receive a negative result.

* As always, Kent Denver School will comply fully with Tri-County Health Department’s
COVID-19 notification and closure guidelines. As of August 5, 2020, exposure to COVID-19 is
defined as having been fewer than six feet away from someone who has COVID-19, for a period
of 15 minutes or more, while one or both parties was not wearing a mask.

OUR GREATEST COLLABORATION THIS YEAR
will be to keep our school open and our students and employees healthy.
For that to happen, we must each do our part. There will be changes in how we dress, teach, learn, work and interact. Without question, some of these changes will cause frustration, but we believe they are essential.
We have already shared a number of the steps with employees and contractors. Prior to the start of school, we will distribute the full plan, in writing, to them as well.
Some of what you read in this section are strong recommendations. Others are policies that are non-negotiable. In both cases, the information in this plan will likely change as what medical professionals and government officials know about eradicating COVID-19 evolves.
Once again, thank you for your partnership during this time. Together, we will reduce—and hopefully—eliminate the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
Following is what you should expect of the school and employees as well as what we, in turn, expect of you:
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
K E N T D E N V E R S C H O O L
• Committed to creating a reopening plan based on science and data.
Created four Levels of Operational Readiness to provide uninterrupted instruction during the pandemic. First introduced last spring and clarified during the summer, the Levels clearly state how school will be conducted should COVID-19 cases increase or should other conditions require campus to close.
• Defined our safety and health protocols, including a travel policy and required mask policy, in the 2020-21 Family Handbook. We will review those protocols thoroughly during required Stay Healthy, KDS! training for students and employees.*
• Formed a Medical Advisory Board of respected health professionals—many of whom are members of our community who know our school, teachers and students well—to provide guidance as we navigat the shifting landscape of COVID-19 advisories.
• Established a collaborative relationship with Tri-County Health Department and hired a full-time school nurse to oversee health practices, guide training and more on campus.
Purchased licenses for a wellness app that will make it easy for students and employees to complete required daily health attestations.
• Installed dozens of hand-sanitizing stations and reminder signage throughout campus to support hygiene and personal distancing.
• Installed new, hospital-grade Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) 13 and HEPA air filters to increase air turnover in all campus buildings. MERV values range from 1-16. The higher the value, the greater percentage of particles captured.
Created student cohorts to support physical distancing in classrooms and reduce congestion in halls. We also reconfigured classrooms and common areas encourage physical distancing.
• Consulted with the Wellness Team, Academic Department Chairs and others on how to conduct school safely and well.
• Incorporated a number of recommendations and suggestions from teachers, staff and parents during the planning process and provided as many accommodations as possible for teachers and staff with unique challenges during the pandemic.
* At least one parent or guardian for each student must sign the 2020-21 Family Handbook acknowledgment form before their student may begin school on campus. The deadline for signing the acknowledgment form is August 17, 2020.

• Support the school’s strong recommendation to stay home in the two weeks prior to the start of school. As detailed in the travel policy in the 2020-21 Family Handbook, employees and students are asked to limit travel as much as possible at least two weeks prior to their campus commitment (pre-season sports practices, faculty meetings, etc.) Additionally, we ask that individuals notify the school nurse if they plan to travel to areas that are experiencing a significant number of Covid-19 cases, or travel by air. In those cases, we will require that they take a COVID-19 test three or more days after they return from their travel, receive a negative COVID-19 test result and/or self-isolate for a period of time before they may return to campus.
• Submit required paperwork—updated student health forms, release of liability, 2020-21 Family Handbook acknowledgment and parent/guardian acknowledgment of pandemic guidance—before August 17. You will access health forms, release of liability and acknowledgment of pandemic guidance on Blackbaud’s MySchoolApp and the 2020-21 Family Handbook acknowledgment on the Parent Portal. Remember, these forms are your student’s entry to on-campus school. Without signed forms on file, students will not be able to attend classes in person.
• Support Kent Denver’s mask policy. Based on advice from our Medical Advisory Board and in accordance with health recommendations, students, staff, visitors and contractors are required to wear a mask entering, leaving or while inside a Kent Denver building when the school is in Level 2 or Level 3, with the following exceptions:
Teachers will receive transparent face shields to wear during class if additional visibility will enhance learning.
Employees working alone in an office do not need to wear a mask or face shield.
Students who attend Kent Denver School on campus are required to comply with our mask policy. This is non-negotiable.
Be understanding and kind to teachers and staff. All adults on campus are working hard to ensure students are able to return to school in person. They, like you, are adjusting to new policies and protocols.
Follow the school’s health and safety guidelines. Mask-wearing, physical distancing and cohorts take adjustment and flexibility. We appreciate your support.
Help reduce the spread of COVID-19 by washing your hands frequently and cleaning your desk before each class. Hand-sanitizing stations and cleaning wipes are located in each classroom and throughout the school.

COMMUNITY DAYS AUGUST 26-28
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
During the planning process, we considered a number of options to reopen campus safely. Our goal for this work was to continue to follow guidance from our Medical Advisory Board, Board of Trustees, Tri-County Health Department and government officials. We also consulted with leaders of, and reopening plan developers at, independent schools in Colorado and around the country.
Grouping students into cohorts—by grade level for Middle School and in mixed-grade, RED, YELLOW, BLUE, GREEN and PURPLE groups for Upper School—proved to be the best model for our school.
We believe that the cohort model combined with the safety and health protocols students will learn about during Stay Healthy, KDS! training are important safeguards.
The next few pages provide an overview of Community Days. Parents and students will learn more in emails from Carrie Green, Middle School Director, and Eric Chandler, Upper School Director, that will be sent on August 10, 2020.
A gradual reintroduction to school and classes will
allow students, teachers and staff to continue to build
relationships while receiving important training on
the health and safety protocols designed to reduce—and
hopefully eliminate—COVID-19 transmission on campus.
We believe that if our community stands together during
this time, our school can remain open.

OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
During Community Days, Middle School students will return to campus by
grade level, each with their own first day of school: 6th-grade: Wednesday,
August 26, 7th-grade: Thursday, August 27, 8th-grade: Friday, August 28.
This individualized, tailored experience will enable all three grade-level
cohorts to experience full day of school and meet each of their teachers in
their classrooms while gradually experiencing school in the time of COVID-19.
Of course, we will offer a customized program for middle-schoolers who
selected Kent Denver online school. These activities will help them both
acclimate to off-campus school and engage with their classmates.
It’s our hope that easing into the school year will enable middle-schoolers
to learn, experience and connect in important ways that emphasize our core
values of Integrity, Respect, Community, Personal Growth and Wisdom.

COMMUNITY DAYS UPPER SCHOOL
K E N T D E N V E R S C H O O L
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
Community Days for Kent Denver’s current and rising
school leaders are designed to accomplish three essential
things for this extraordinary and unprecedented beginning
of the school year. They provide an excellent opportunity
for our community to become accustomed to being back
on campus after months away from school…and from each
other. They provide space and time to orient everyone around
how we will conduct school together. And, they provide a
way to celebrate the start of the school year, have fun, build
community, and get to know each other.
Upper School students will learn which cohort they are in
when they log into Canvas to get their class schedules. Then,
they will meet old friends and new as they return to campus
by cohort during Community Days.

UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY DAYS SCHEDULE
WHAT’S A COHORT?Cohorts (grade-level in Middle School and a limited number of students in Upper School) help support physical distancing in classrooms, hallways and outside.
14
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
While our school is in Level 2 or Level 3 of operation, the following steps are in place to support students and teachers:
• Teachers have the option of conducting class outdoors on our 200-acre campus. Based on guidelines in place when this document was produced, students and teachers are not required to wear masks outside if appropriate physical distancing is maintained. As always however, teachers establish class norms, and this may include wearing masks outside.
• Teachers and students are encouraged to take periodic “brain breaks” where they walk outside, physically distanced, and breathe without wearing masks.
• School days begin at 9 a.m. every day.
• On most days, tasty box lunches are delivered to school buildings as the Dining Hall is closed during Level 2 and Level 3—but there will outdoor barbeques and some special surprises!
• Cohorts continue to support physical distancing. As helpful reminders, student key cards work in designated cohort entrances and signs are displayed throughout campus buildings.
• Access to school buildings is restricted to students, employees and authorized contractors. Everyone must wear a face mask entering, leaving and while inside a school building.
• There are no off-campus privileges during this time.
• Remember, by signing the Acknowledgment of Pandemic Guidance and Family Handbook Acknowledgment forms, parents and guardians authorize Kent Denver to allow their child/children on campus. Without these signed documents on file, students may not attend school in person.
The details on this page are not all-inclusive and may change as we learn more about COVID-19. Be sure to read the Reopening Plan page on the website and emails from Dr. Harrington, Ms. Green, Dr. Chandler, Ms. Scobie, Mr. Walker and class deans for the latest information.
K E N T D E N V E R S C H O O L
The latest research indicates that mask-wearing,
appropriate physical distancing and strict hygiene
reduce the spread of COVID-19. It is our hope that,
as our community complies with these protocols—
as well as other effective strategies developed
in the future—our classrooms and campus will
remain open.

BACK-TO-CLASS MIDDLE SCHOOL
OUR PLAN TO REOPEN CAMPUS SAFELY
• Students continue to build on relationships started and rekindled during Community Days.
• Grade-level cohorts help keep students safe.
• Vigilant teachers, advisors and deans remind students to follow Kent Denver safety protocols.
• Students enjoy fun Middle School electives on Thursday afternoons.
• Our focus on fitness continues with a new Middle School Athletics program.
• Leadership opportunities continue for students interested in pursuing those roles.
• Ms. Green and the Middle School deans work with teachers and advisors to create as many opportunities as possible for our online students to bond with classmates.

Kent Denver Athletics are an important part of
the educational experience for our students, and
we are committed to providing a robust program
that supports healthy bodies, minds and spirits. As
health and government officials learn more about
COVID-19, their guidance to schools may change and
we remind our families that our programming may
evolve in turn.
Following months of collaboration with state
health officials, the Colorado High School Activities
Association (CHSAA) announced a revised 2020-2021
interscholastic athletics and activities calendar on
August 4, 2020.
We understand that the new CHSAA schedule
may cause school calendar issues, and we are
working through those.
Should Kent Denver School move into Level 4,
which requires campus to close, we will offer
robust virtual team-building opportunities.
UPPER SCHOOL• All Upper School athletic offerings can be found here.
• From the start of school through mid-October, Kent Denver Athletics will also offer a number of fitness-oriented activities, including but not limited to yoga, strength and performance training, mountain biking, leadership training, lifetime activities and field sports such as ultimate frisbee/capture the flag.
• The team sport requirement has been waived for the 2020-21 school year however all Upper School students are required to sign up for one afternoon activity.
• We will cap certain sports due to facility restrictions.
• Boys’ golf and boys’ tennis are full.
MIDDLE SCHOOL• Kent Denver, along with other ACIS schools, will not
compete in Middle School interscholastic competitions. We will start afternoon activities on August 31.
• Kent Denver Athletics will offer traditional sport seasons with rotations for yoga, strength and performance training, and physical education.
• All Middle School students will be required to participate in all three seasons. We will make exceptions for online students and accept waivers on a case-by-case basis.
