Saying the final ‘Goodbye’ to a beloved pet is a stressful, difficult and emotional experience

for every member of the family.

The professional staff at Final Gift understands this. Having suffered the loss of our dearest friend and companion, we were

once faced with the same difficult decisions you may now be faced with.

How do we properly say goodbye?

How can we give our friend one last gift for all of the love and loyalty she gave to us?

Cremation offered our family the most thoughtful and respectful way to make

the love and memories we shared with our pet last forever.

Final Gift can pick up your pet from home or your veterinary clinic. Call us directly or request

our services through your veterinarian.

Well we’ve finished tallying the

winners for the 2008 TOP DOG Readers Choice and as always I find myself pleased, amused and even surprised by the outcome. When I first began polling readers for their top pick’s,

{Letter From The Editor}

I thought it would be a wonderful way for “other” folks to find out about secret dog parks, great businesses and all kinds of things for their pets. What has begun to happen is that I’m personally finding so many new and exciting places to take my dogs! For example, did you know that The Canfield House in Newport has a canine cocktail hour on the porch in the summer...I can’t wait! Something else that many of you are well aware of but I’ve never considered is that the pet isle at Whole Foods Market is a great place to meet single pet lovers...and while I’m currently off the market, I plan to send all my single friends over immediately! Lastly, I would like to invite everyone to join us at the upcoming RI Pet Show on March 14th & 15th. This year is shaping up to be one of the best shows yet. Turn to page 18 to check out the full schedule, who will be at the show and even a map to help you get around. I hope you enjoy our this issue and hopefully find something new exciting too! Sincerely,Stephanie GeorgiaEditor and Publisher

Yappy PetWhat Does

Your Pet Have To Say?

Cockatoo Fakes Them Out Cries for help inside a Trenton, New Jersey home turned out to be for the birds. Neighbors called police one morning after hearing a woman’s persistent cry of “Help me! Help me!” coming from a house. Officers arrived and when no one answered the door, they kicked it in. But instead of a damsel in distress,

officers found a caged cockatoo yelling for help. It wasn’t the first time the 10-year-old bird named Luna said something that brought authorities to the home of her person, Evelyn DeLeon. About seven years ago, the bird cried like a baby for

hours, leading to reports of a possible abandoned baby and a visit to the home

by state child-welfare workers. But it was only Luna practicing a new sound. She learns much of her ever-growing vocabulary from watching TV, in both English and Spanish, DeLeon says.

Providence Barks

New Group Formed to Support the needs of Dogs and their Responsible Owners in Providence, RI Providence Barks, a new public-spirited citizens group has been formed to identify and support the needs of dogs and their owners in the city of Providence. The group has been established by the owner of the east side pet bou-tique, “Plaid & Stripe” after his realization that dog owners in Providence were a potential civic and political force but unlike other cities like New York and Los Angeles were virtually invisible because of their lack of organization. “Having lived in New York City and spent a substantial amount of time in Los Angeles, both cities with large dog populations, I have seen first hand what a city can do to meet the needs of dogs and their owners. Both cities feature extensive, well appointed dog parks and ordinances that recognize both the needs of the public at large and those residents who own dogs,” said Bugbee. He contin-ued: Not only are Providence’s ordinances virulently anti-dog, but the current laws are all but unenforced leading to conflicts among those who own dogs and those who don’t. Registration and Enforcement Leads to Strength.Providence Barks feels strongly that the city’s lax attitude towards enforcement of registration and licensing ordi-nances has contributed to a less than acceptable response from city regarding the provision of facilities and services for dog owners: Making Registration and Licensing Easier.Bugbee says Providence Barks is also suggesting that additional licensing sites be established throughout the city to make the process as easy and convenient as possible. “I have offered the services of my retail business to license dogs at no additional cost to the city for residents on the east side. We are hopeful that other pet industry retail and service businesses will also provide licensing services to the public. And no charge to the city. Said Bugbee, “there is no question that enhanced licensing procedures will have exceptional benefits for dogs, their owners and the city they live in and I am hopeful the city will agree.

Over 70% of cats who enter our nation’s animal control pounds and shelters are killed. That number jumps to virtually 100% for feral cats.

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) announced the closure of three of the non-profit’s Animal Care and Adoption Centers due to the challenging economy including the facilities in Brockton (Metro South), Martha’s Vineyard and Springfield (Western New England).

The closures will be coupled with the downsizing of several programs and departments at its Boston offices. All changes combined will result in elimination of 46 positions, impacting 38 people. “We lost 25.7% of our endowment in 2008; translating to over $11 million. This puts us in a position where we must now take action to ensure our long term financial health and ability as an animal welfare orga-nization to serve the greatest good for animals across Massachusetts into the future,” said MSPCA president, Carter Luke.

The MSPCA will stagger the closure of its adoption centers, closing in Springfield effective March 31, 2009 and Martha’s Vineyard effective May 1, 2009. The Brockton adoption center will close effective September 30, 2009 with a phase down beginning in late March. Separation pay and outplacement services will be offered to all of the MSPCA’s dedicated and loyal employees to aid them in this difficult transition.

16 Initiated Legislation: Rhode Island’s Rabies Law

Pet Owners in Rhode Island have initiated a legislative effort to change the state’s 2 year rabies booster law to the national 3 year standard and on behalf of The Rabies Challenge Fund www.RabiesChallengeFund.org

The Center for Disease Control’s National Association of State Public Health Veterinarian’s (NASPHV) Com-pendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control 2008 states that, “Vaccines used in state and local rabies control programs should have at least a 3-year duration of im-munity. This constitutes the most effective method of increasing the proportion of immunized dogs and cats in any population.” They specifically warn that, “no labora-tory or epidemiologic data exist to support the annual or

biennial administration of 3 or 4 year vaccines following the initial series.” Also endorsing the NASPHV’s Rabies Compendium are the American Veterinary Medical As-sociation (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). What You Can Do to Help:Contact your legislator and ask them to introduce a bill changing the 2 year booster requirement to conform to the 3 year protocol recommended by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians Rabies Compendium and ask your pet-owning friends to do the same. Visit www.rilin.state.ri.us/ to assist you in finding your legislators.

Spring is In the Air…

Is Kitty Out the Door?As the temperature climbs and the snow melts, everyone starts getting a little cabin fever. You see more joggers; rakes are pulled out; bikes are dusted off. Pets feel the change too. Dogs really appreciate the increased walks, time in the yard, and car rides. But how can our feline friends enjoy the nice weather? For many, letting the cat outside is the answer. But this poses very serious risks, which is why it is recommended cats be kept inside only. In this article I hope to help address some of the reasons why cats are let out. I also hope to make recommendations to help keep cats safer when they are outside, because I understand that there are plenty of cats who will continue to venture out.

Behavior ProblemsMost people put their cats out in response to behavior problems. Litter box problems are the number one feline behavior complaint. Trust me, I know. You may recall a past article about my own cat litter box issue. I am happy to report that this issue is finally, completely resolved. There are specific steps one should follow when they are dealing with litter box problems, but here is a very brief overview:

• Schedule a vet exam to rule out medical causes • Spay or neuter • Provide one more box than the number of cats • Avoid box liners and deodorizing sprays • Scoop box daily, wash with mild dish detergent weekly • Clean all urine/feces stains outside the box with an enzymatic cleaner designed for this purpose • Choose and stick to a litter your cat likes, usually unscented, fine-grain, & scoopable • Choose the box your cat likes best, usually jumbo size, uncovered, & shallow • Choose easily accessible loca-tions away from noisy appliances • Contact a professional if problems persist

The next most common behavior problem is scratched belongings. Before you resort to declawing or putting the cat out, take a look at these simple suggestions:

• Ask your vet to show you how to trim your cat’s nails, and trim them regularly• Provide horizontal and vertical scratching surfaces in high traffic areas• Provide multiple textures for scratching, such as carpet, sisal, and cardboard• Make inappropriate scratching locations less attractive by covering them with

packing or duct tape, sticky-side out

• Put rubber caps on kitty’s nails, like Soft Paws • Contact a professional if problems persist

Regardless of the behavior problem, simply putting the cat outside may not resolve the issue. In fact, you may find the issues worsen to the point that your cat is outside all the time. Before taking any drastic steps, contact a professional to help you. One excellent resource is the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/behavior/abh.shtml).

New Baby or Child AllergiesSometimes when a new baby arrives, parents feel the need to put the cat outside to keep the child safe or to alleviate allergies. With proper precautions and supervision, plenty of cats and babies are able to live in perfect harmony. There are lots of old wives’ tales, concerns about toxoplasmosis, and safety questions. If you are expecting a baby or plan to adopt, please look into the classes and books available to assist you. As far as allergies are concerned, studies have found that among children with allergies other than pet related allergies, having pets does not seem to make the situation worse. In fact, exposure to pets at home may protect children from developing pet allergies until at least age 7.

Don’t Cats Belong Outside? Many families let cats out because they feel bad for the cats, being cooped up inside all the time. I agree that cats do need the opportunity to have plenty of mental and physical stimulation and room to run and jump. However, simply opening the door isn’t always the answer. Cars, cat fights, attacks from dogs or coyotes, and toxins are very real hazards for outdoor cats. It is estimated that cats who are let outside live to an average age of six years, whereas indoor cats live upwards of 10 or 12 years.

That said, I know there are cats out there who insist on being let outside, or homes that will continue to let their cats out. If your cat is going to go outside, here are a few suggestions to help keep them safe: • Install invisible fencing in your yard to keep cats away from roads, driveways, and woods • Install cat doors with locking mechanisms • Install cat fencing in your yard (Google “cat fence” ) • Build outdoor cat containment “jungle gyms” with access via one of your windows

As a final alternative to letting cats out, try window boxes that allow cats to sit “outside” while still being safely inside, such as the Cat Window Veranda by Drs Foster and Smith or the Feline Solarium (www.thefelinesolarium.com).

I hope this information helps your cats to enjoy a safer, less stressful springtime season. Remember, there is usually another answer that may take a little more time and a little more effort, but in the end, you and your cat may just be happier for it. Enjoy the spring!

Dear friends of Lola,

Last month my dear furry friend Lola went to

the big ole’ doggie park in the sky. She had a

good life and I know she was happy to have you

all in her doggie world. It was her time, and she

went very peacefully. I’m sure if she could talk

she would thank you all for your kindness, and

her send off would be love and kisses.

So thank you all from the both of us.

Laura and Lola

“Bailey”Hi everyone, This is Bailey and I am writing you to say goodbye. Just recently I have had more and more trouble breathing and it makes me tired. I cannot sleep at night and sometimes I am scared that I can’t get any air at all. A couple of days ago I told Mommy that I am ready to move on. I feel that my duty has been completed here.

I am a little afraid of who is going to take care of my mom. I protected her – no matter what. When she would talk to other people she would sometimes laugh and refer to me as her shadow. I guess that means I did a good job. I really tried to be there whenever she needed me and I hope she will be safe once I am gone.My dad was a pretty incredible guy too and my most favorite part was that he would bring me bones every week.

Other than Mom and Dad, I’ve had some incredible friends. My best friend is Traer, she saved my life more than 4 years ago when she rescued me from the dog pound. And then there was all the people in the office: Danny who would feed me French Fries and $.99 burgers when Mom wasn’t looking (and sometimes when she saw it); Jeremy who would always light scented candles when I was

around and made it smell so nice for me. (I did overhear him saying that my gas was unbearable – but then again, he is somewhat dramatic). Nicole who never stopped trying garments on me even though I kept on run-ning away; Annemarie who insisted that I needed to be walked way more often than I really felt was necessary; and Jon who proclaimed a dislike of animals but secretly loved me. You guys were my family.

And then there were times when mom and dad were out of town and I had to be taken care of. Thank you Molly, Ed, Matt, Craig, Jason, Dan, Jeremy, Annemarie, Jonathan, Joelle, Stephanie, Mark, Nicole, Lisa, Jen, and many more.

I would also like to thank my Vet Dr. Hassinger and her staff at Wolf Rock. I generally don’t like vets but you are ok. Thanks for taking care of me. I will miss you all!

Drummer is a one year old neutered male and up to date on shots. He is a wonderfully happy, sweet, socialized dog! He gets along great with all dogs and people, but must be kept away from ALL CATS! He sits pretty for attention and treats but loves to snuggle under your arms and on your lap.

Harry is not in the shelter. He is in foster care. Please do not contact the shelter about Harry as they have no information on him. Harry is an 11 month old, neutered APBT. He is up to date on all shots, heart worm negative, and house trained. If you are interested in Harry, please email [email protected]

Genny lou is not in the shelter. If you are interested in adopting her please email [email protected]. Genny is a won-derful, sweet and affectionate 9 month old min Pin mix. She is a bit larger than some at 15-20 lbs but could stand to skip a meal. We are also looking for a quiet and relaxed home.

Junior is an adorable tan and white pit mix with slightly puffy lips. He loves people and loves attention and will quietly cry until you come over to him. Junior is probably right around a year old maybe a little less. He still seems to have a little puppiness in his movements.

He already know how to sit and shake hands!

Percy is a 6 – 7 month old Lab/Pointer Mix. He was found on Valentines Day which his foster parents think is perfect because he is full of love and affection. Lulu – Because of the speckles on my face and chest and the shape of my face, every-one thinks I might have some pointer in me. I would probably be called an “American Shel-ter Dog” but petfinder doesn’t have that as a breed option. What do you think. I’m a little hyper but I’m still young (6-8 months).

Tally – I am a stunning female pit mix. You will be so proud to be seen with me because I am just a beautiful dog. I weigh about 60 pounds. I am all tan with a faint mask on my face. I have been at the shelter since October 25th. I’m not really hyper but I can get car-ried away during play. I need a firm owner.

Dozer – Everyone here loves me because I’m such a good boy. I am a 66 pound, 8 to 12 month old, black and white pit bull mix. I am young but calm. I don’t really stand out but just ask to see me if you come by. My name is Dozer and I’m number 444.

Torrie – Hello everyone! I am just another cute pittie. Yes, I am a little hyper but I can be such a good girl with just a little training. I have been at the shelter since 12/16/08. We are all spayed/neutered at the shelter. I am about 2-3 years old and weigh about 49 pounds. I am so cute. Check out my picture. Do you see those cute ears?

Mansfield Animal Shelter - Mansfield, MA • 508.261.7339 • [email protected]

Milo is only seven months old. He was surrendered when his owner’s housing situation changed.

Tex is a sweet, friendly, easy going two year old who loves to rub against you and roll on his back when you pet him. Tex would make a good pet for most families.

Lexi is housebroken, and great with kids, cats, and most dogs. She was surrendered because of allergies in her family. Lexi is a sweet girl who knows commands such as: sit, paw, and down. She would make a great family pet.

Macie is a four year old, female Lab/Shepherd mix. She was surrendered when her owner moved and couldn’t keep her. Macie is good with people but she does not get along with other dogs.

Friends of Attleboro Shelter - Attleboro, MA • 508.761.5617 • [email protected]

Thelma was abandoned near the shelter with her pal Louise. We think she is between 1-2 years old. Thelma is a playful young girl who hasn’t been taught much. Thelma will do best in an adult, dog experienced home. We don’t know her past but we do know she needs training from the start. She needs structure and crate training.

Sox was born in 2005. He was found and brought to us by a concerned citizen. He was definitely someone’s cat as he came to us much cleaner than an outdoor cat could every be. He loves attention and would make a great addition to any family.

Cornelius was brought into the shelter because he was lonely and trying to make friends at someone’s house. Unfortunately the cat and dog there weren’t looking for a new friend, so he ended up here. He is very sweet, lovable and low-key. If you’re looking for a new friend, please inquire about your potential new friend, Cornelius.

Lexus, like the car she is also a luxury dog! Due to personal reasons, her family can no longer keep her so Miss Lexus is looking for a new home. She will be celebrating her first birthday soon, not sure if the exact date but early February. She is a valentine girl, look at the heart shaped face. She also still needs basic training but can sit and wait.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:Volunteer Shelter Trainers Needed The Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club Inc. is looking for volunteers to go to local shelters and work with bully breeds available for adoption by doing some basic training with them. Also needed - foster homes for the urgent dogs. Not interested in working with the dogs directly? Maybe you would like to help with our fundraising and education efforts? If interested, please contact: Susan Parker at 401-823-8851 • [email protected]
