MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES
We have had a very positive response to our memorial fund which allows people to donate any amount in memory of a loved one (living or deceased) in commemorating special events in their lives (births,
baptisms, marriages, weddings, anniversaries, ordinations, special birthdays, in thanksgiving or other milestones). We have been able to purchase and pay for new vestments and stoles – before we had no matching vestments or concelebrant stoles - and new flagons (pitchers) for the consecration of the Precious Blood of Christ. The Paschal Candle was donated through a generous donation to the fund. Not everyone can afford to buy a single item so it is nice to be able to contribute towards it. An acknowledgement is sent to those who are being remembered or honored as well as a personal thank you to those who contribute. Please see Fr. Jim or call him at the Parish Center at 201-666-1100 for more information or to contribute to the memorial fund.

GAME PLAN
In your life, God wants you on the field and in the game.
He doesn’t want you sitting in the stands.
God isn’t looking for fans. He wants players.
He wants us to succeed so He has given us His playbook - the Bible.
AA time to be born into the waters of Baptism” You are a child of God. You are wonderfully made, dearly loved and precious in His sight St. Andrew’s community welcomes you.

JUNE 2018 Eleanor Mae Fitzpatrick, daughter of Victoria & Andrew Hannah Maeve Burke, daughter of Lauren & Brian Joseph Daniel Ciardulli, son of Elaina & Ralph Wyatt Huening, son of Diane & Paul
We continue last week’s Pastoral Reflection on the Beatitudes in which Pope Francis states that holiness means “going against the flow” of the world and he urges Christians to let the words “unsettle us, challenge us and demand real change in the way we live.”
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Peacemakers build peace and friendship in society. Gossip is negative and destructive, an enemy of peace just as wars are. Unity is preferable to conflict.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” In living the Gospel, the obstacles of power and worldly interests stand in the way. So this commitment is not easy.
Jesus later expands on how we will be judged: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Being Christian is more than performing good works. It also means pursuing social changes to bring about social and economic justice. Our personal relationship with God and our social engagement are both essential to living a holy life.
Prayer and worship of God is important “but we cannot forget that the ultimate criterion on which our lives will be judged is what we have done for others.” Pope Francis encourages us to be tenacious and single-minded in the practice of the works of mercy.”
FINDING A PROPHET IN THE MOST UNEXPECTED PLACE What do prophets do? They share with others, with courage and faith, what they believe God has put in their hearts. Scripture’s prophets speak very little about the future. Rather, they name God in the present moment for the sake of those who have forgotten or rejected God. At the MTV Awards show several weeks ago, the actor, Chris Pratt, accepted the Generation Award and spoke like a prophet in his acceptance speech when he offered his Rules for Living to the young people in the audience: 1) You have a soul – be careful with it.
2) Doesn’t matter whatever it is. Earn it. It feels good and it’s good for your soul. 3) God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you. Believe that. I do. 4) Learn to pray – it’s easy and it’s so good for your soul. 5) Nobody is perfect. People are going to tell you you’re perfect just the way you are. You’re not! You are imperfect and you always will be but, there is a powerful force that designed you that way and if you’re willing to accept that, you will have grace, and grace is a gift. And, like the freedom that we enjoy in this country, that grace was paid for with someone else’s blood. Don’t forget that! Don’t take it for granted. Chris Pratt spoke of God in the present moment in simple declarative sentences. - You have a soul - be careful with it. - Be of service - it’s good for your soul. - God is real, God loves you, God wants the best for you - believe that! - Pray - it’s good for your soul. - You’re not perfect, you’re imperfect and you stand in need of the gift of God’s grace. Prophets name God in the present moment. That’s what John the Baptist and Isaiah did. That’s what Chris Pratt did. And that’s what we are called to do, too. - - excerpts from The Concord Pastor’s Homily on 6/24/18 - -

“Invite you”
Fr. Sylvester comes to us from the Diocese of Nnewi in Anambra State, Nigeria. The inspiration for his priestly vocation began with the regular praying of the rosary with his family. The greatest influence in Fr. Sylvester’s life was the indelible holiness of his parish priest, the late Fr. Godwin C. Ikeobi. Fr. Sylvester entered the seminary at 11 years of age.
After his philosophical and theological studies and formation, Fr. Sylvester was ordained a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Nigeria, on the 14th of July 2012. He served as a Parish Vicar from 2012-2014. Bishop Okeke sent Fr. Sylvester to study for his license and doctorate in Biblical theology at the Focolta’ di Teologia Lugano in Switzerland.
Fr. Cinque, Pastor of OLGC, welcomes Fr. Sylvester back for a third summer. Fr. Sylvester’s love of God, his education, and his anointed gifts of preaching and teaching continues to open the eyes and hearts of those who desire a deeper communion with our Triune God. He continues Jesus’ call “to spread the Good News to the ends of the earth” – even here in Bergen County!
