Introduction Our HIAS Moodles offer schools access to a wide range of resources, subject news and course materials. We regularly review the quality of the resources and information on offer to ensure that all our Moodles are relevant and up-to-date as well as being easier for school users to access and navigate.

All our Moodle sites can now be accessed via our HIAS Moodles home page, a front door that also links you to other useful Hampshire sites and sources of information (including Governor Services, Services for Young Children, School Library Service and EMTAS). We encourage schools to take a look and bookmark this page in their browser to enable quick and easy navigation between our sites: https://hias-moodle.mylearningapp.com/.

Moodle+ As part of our Moodle offer each of our HIAS subject sites has a Moodle+ subscription area that aims to draw together key resources that we believe will be valuable for subject leads and teachers. All our Moodle+ areas are updated regularly with new resources in line with developments in thinking and policy locally and nationally as well as in response to subscriber requests and suggestions.

In order to give a flavour of what Moodle+ can offer, there is a Moodle+ Preview area on each of our sites where you can view samples of resources. You can access these areas via the Moodle+ Preview button on the left hand side of each of the subject Moodle home pages.

Interested in subscribing? Our Moodle+ subscription offers excellent value for money – one annual payment gives unlimited access in your school to all Moodle+ areas across twelve subject Moodle sites.

    • All schools with 2020/21 HTLC subscription: £325 • Hampshire Maintained schools without an HTLC subscription: £395 • Non-Hampshire maintained schools without an HTLC subscription: £475

To subscribe, please complete and submit this form. We will then contact you with your login information. The form can be completed at any time and the link is also available on the Moodle+ cover pages on each site.

English In Moodle+ you will find a variety of resources created by the HIAS English team to support teaching and learning in all areas of English. Our intention is to offer resources that support schools to continually improve outcomes for learners in spoken language, reading and writing, which complement and challenge current practice. As well as providing resources that can be used directly in the classroom for Primary and Secondary, we have created planning, assessment and CPD materials. We develop and grow resources over time to reflect the needs and requests of teachers and leaders.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary… PLANNING Our ‘English Curriculum Guidance’ document supports schools in creating a broad and balanced curriculum. It includes sample long term overviews based on rich texts – including poetry, film and fiction. The potential of texts are explored to model the first layer of planning for reading and writing. Example writing learning journeys for Years 1 to 6 follow the HIAS three stage approach to high quality outcomes, whilst Year R plans demonstrate how to utilise rich texts. New this year, the reading section contains a range of plans for KS1 and KS2, that demonstrate a range of approaches to planning.

CPD & CLASSROOM RESOURCES The English section of Moodle+ includes a range of materials to support staff training and provide classroom resources. There are several toolkits which do both, such as the Common Exception Word Toolkit, Editing Toolkit and Phonics Toolkits. The ideas and training will enable schools to make their own decisions about how to implement, whilst enhancing current practice.

ASSESSMENT The English team have created exemplification materials to support moderation for both reading and writing in Years 1, 3, 4 and 5, both at age related expectations and for those working beyond. The reading materials also include video clips. Each child is tracked throughout the year, rather than just at the end of the year, supporting ‘on track’ data drop decisions.

English cont. A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Secondary…

KS3 Resources include example planning for a range of texts, including Karl Nova’s hip hop poetry and a Year 9 scheme using Ray Bradbury’s short stories (freely available online). These schemes come with supporting resources and link to the revised version of the HIAS KS3 Assessment and Curriculum Model, which aims to support schools in unpicking the complexities of progression at KS3. We also have fiction and non-fiction book lists supported with teaching ideas.

KS4 This section includes teacher resources including ‘Addressing the Barriers at GCSE’ to support diagnosis of problems in reading that may be holding students back from stronger exam performance. Models of revision loops and thinking maps are available amongst other resources.

OTHER RESOURCES Many more resources can be found within Moodle+ that are relevant to both primary and secondary teachers, including resources which focus on KS2/3 transition, poetry, word level development, action planning, whole school literacy and spoken language.

Coming soon to Moodle+… Over the next year we plan to develop a new section to ‘Supporting the Role of the Subject Leader’. This will include key resources such as how to carry out effective book looks. Subscribers will have access to a wider range of planning from rich texts for reading. Writing example plans will grow in variety, such as mixed age planning and end of year journeys that include greater independence. At secondary, we aim to develop further resources to support the teaching of GCSE, including model planning and teaching materials.

Mathematics The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics - know and use your number and calculation facts and skills well.

    • Reason mathematically - be able to talk about the maths you are doing and explain your thinking.

    • Can solve problems - have a range of ways to solve different problems and be prepared to stick at it.

The materials offered in our Maths Moodle+ area will reflect these aims.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary… ARTICLES & RESOURCES We also include some articles of interest that link to current thinking concerning good practice in schools and the development of an appropriate mastery approach. Resources created for the teaching of key areas are also shared. For example, a guidance document about the teaching of times tables so that pupils learn all tables facts by the end of Year 4.

CPD For primary colleagues we offer ideas and materials for in-school CPD such as staff meetings or INSET sessions. For example, Understanding and Using Variation.

HAMPSHIRE SCHEMES OF LEARNING (PRIMARY) In addition to the long and medium term plans for Years 1-6 in the Hampshire Scheme of Learning, there are now plans for each unit of work. These provide a guide for the secure planning of a learning journey across a sequence of lessons enabling teachers to use assessment for learning to meet the needs of their class. They illustrate ideas for types of reasoning tasks and appropriate use of concrete resources and representations to support a mastery CPA (Concrete Pictorial Abstract) approach. For those schools using the Hampshire Assessment Model (HAM), the schemes of learning are linked to assessment milestones. Additionally, new Year 6 revision plans with linked resources are offered for the Spring Term. These plans are particularly aimed at schools who need support for pupils with gaps in learning and seek to avoid the need to test what pupils do not know but to familiarise them with what they do know and how to use it.

CPD, ARTICLES & RESOURCES For secondary colleagues we offer ideas and materials for in-school CPD. This includes department meeting guidance and resources for teachers to use in the classroom. We also include some articles of interest that link to current thinking concerning good practice in schools and the development of an appropriate mastery approach.

HAMPSHIRE SCHEMES OF LEARNING (SECONDARY) The Scheme of Learning has a complete set of Unit plans to complement and support long and medium term planning for Years 7-9. The Unit Plans provide a guide to the secure planning of a learning journey across a sequence of lessons. Unit plans include ideas for tasks and sections on ‘Check and Refresh’, ‘Watch Out For…’ and ‘Building Fluency’. For those schools using the Hampshire Assessment Model (HAM), the schemes of learning are linked to assessment milestones. Coming soon to Moodle+… Over the next year we will develop the planning section of Moodle+ in particular. Subscribers will have access to additional arithmetic resources as part of each unit plan for Yrs 1-9 linked to the Hants Schemes of Learning. These will be designed to support colleagues in systematically teaching arithmetic strategies in all year groups. An additional Y7 to Y9 glossary cards resource to support pupils’ acquisition and use of key vocabulary. This resource links mathematical vocabulary associated with each unit of work and encourages students to identify and example and a ‘non-example’, alongside a pictorial representation of the work. Blank templates are included for teachers and students to create their own cards.

Science In the science Moodle+ you will find advice and resources developed by the HIAS science team and teachers to support the teaching and assessment of science from KS1-4. These resources will include:

    • A range of trialed materials to support effective curriculum planning.

    • Best practice examples, activities and other ideas for teaching science.

    • Practical advice and guidance for teaching children and young people who experience emotional and behavioral barriers to learning.

    • Materials to ensure progression, raising aspiration and attainment for all children and young people across the key stages

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary…

PLANNING A SCIENCE CURRICULUM The Hampshire Learning Journeys outline precisely what children need to be taught so they can solve challenging science problems. Knowledge is described so that progression is clear and rational and many examples of challenging problems where this knowledge can be applied are provided. Here is an example from years 3 and 4 describing the learning journey called solids, liquids and gases.

TEACHING THROUGH PROBLEM SOLVING A detailed guide to teaching through problem solving is provided. Examples of how such lessons are can be planned are shared, including how children’s thinking can be scaffolded. Here is an example of a scaffold that allows children to predict how solar systems form.

SCAFFOLDING CHILDREN’S THINKING Scientific thinking and problem solving is challenging; it stretches our working memory to its limits. Scaffolds help by allowing children to log their ideas as they have them and therefore construct bigger ideas from smaller ones. The planning mindmap is a powerful scaffold to support children plan investigations.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Secondary… THE HAMPSHIRE MODEL OF A SCIENCE KS3 CURRICULUM The KS3 National Curriculum, and purchased schemes that are based upon it, is extremely vague when defining what students must learn. Imprecision in teaching leads to poor progress for many students. We define precisely what students need to learn through KS3 (science concepts, working scientifically ideas and mathematics) in order to be ready for KS4.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING GCSE SUCCESS A summary of tips for science teachers to consider when preparing students for exams. Practical guides ad advice for working through to identify and address potential barriers for students.

PRECISE LEARNING MODEL The model of teaching is described in detail and examples are shared of how teachers have used it to ensure the curriculum is remembered. The model is based upon a principle that students should tackle problems with the knowledge they are taught in order to remember it.

Coming soon to Moodle+… Primary: We will be adding videos giving short descriptions of each learning journey. Outlining what they mean, how they relate to the National Curriculum and how children can be engaged in using them for problem solving. Secondary: We will be adding the outcomes of a two year study into how pupils can be supported in planning, carrying out and evaluating their own investigations. Geography The Geography Moodle+ is primarily resourced by the HIAS Geography advisor with a focus on teaching geography. It aims to provide Primary and Secondary geography teachers with resources that can be adapted to be used in lessons and ideas that will support the development of quality teaching. Supporting teachers to develop a bespoke and appropriate curriculum with engaging and challenging lessons is central to the purpose of the resources on the Geography Moodle+.

A taster of what is available on Geography Moodle+ Primary… WHERE AM I? This section includes games to play with Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to help children develop their locational knowledge and geographical vocabulary appropriate to their Key Stage. Key Stage 1 focuses on the continents and oceans whereas Key Stage 2 zooms into countries and cities from the UK and around the world.

PLANNING This section includes medium term plans for

teaching an integrated content and skills

curriculum for Year 1 to 6. The planning gives lots

of detail and resource ideas that allows schools to

adapt the lessons for the needs of their children

    and teachers.

TEACHING This section includes ideas for teaching the

themes of geography such as similarities and

differences and human and physical geography. It

also shares activities to increase children’s

geographical vocabulary and help them with the

thinking, talking and writing skills of geography

    including identifying, describing, explaining,

    comparing and evaluating.

GCSE PERSONALISED LEARNING CHECKLISTS Personalised learning checklists that can be used by teachers and students to assess learning against the specification. Students can each be given a copy for their books or folders to act as a knowledge checklist for each topic. The curriculum content has been summarised using the GCSE OCR B specification and students are able to mark when areas of content have been revised and can also traffic light their confidence level.

ACTIVITIES Resources include more challenging “Where Am I?” activities to play. These focus on cities and countries from around the world. There are KS3 homework activities for topics such as rivers, the local area, hazards and population which can be used or adapted for the pupils and teachers in your school. There are also suggested reading lists for pupils and teachers organised by continent.

TEACHING These sections include a range of resources to challenge thinking and support the development of an effective teaching environment. Samples of the resources available amongst other resources include activities to implement instead of copying; a process to support pupils when they use resources and ideas to support literacy.

Coming soon to Moodle+… Over the next year we plan to develop the planning section of Moodle+ in particular. Subscribers will have access to a range of topics for teaching a knowledge-rich curriculum to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. At Secondary, we aim to develop further resources to support the teaching of GCSE, including model planning and teaching materials.

    Religious Education cont.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Secondary… TEACHING WELL WITH LIVING DIFFERENCE III The process of enquiry in Living Difference III entails teachers bringing children and young people first to attend to their own experience of concepts, before enquiring with an intellectually open-mind into related religious as well as nonreligious ways of living, represented in Great Britain and beyond, before discerning why this may be important for others as well as themselves. This resource includes an introduction to the enquiry process in Living Difference III. It includes 4 groups of activities to promote more complex thinking and speaking in all lessons as well as in full “Community of Philosophical Enquiry” lessons.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A SECONDARY RE DEPARTMENT USING LIVING DIFFERENCE III (AGREED SYLLABUS FOR RE) A self-evaluation tool giving overview of anticipated progression towards Best Practice for a secondary school using Living Difference III by identifying:

History In the history Moodle+ area, you will find advice and resources to support the improvement of history provision in your school from KS1-4. Our history team continue to develop and regularly share new materials on the site to support the aims of the National Curriculum. These resources will ensure our teaching equips children and young people to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop curiosity, perspective and judgement in forming their historical framework that is diverse and complex.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary…

EXEMPLAR LONG TERM CURRICULUM PLANS The resource suggests an approach with explicit steps that can be used to structure the planning of the curriculum study. Teachers will make their own decisions on the length of time to spend in each stage according to age, interests and prior experience. It is not intended to suggest that each step takes place in one lesson.

ADDITIONAL HISTORY HITS STRATEGIES On Balance: This strategy is designed to help pupils sort the evidence that supports two opposing arguments. To do this they metaphorically weigh the arguments to see which of two opposing viewpoints is the best supported by evidence Through the Keyhole: This strategy is particularly useful at Key Stage 2. Named after the TV programmes, it is designed to engage pupils in an exploration of the everyday lives of people at different times in the past and/or from past civilizations, rather than of today’s celebrities. Sorting Scramble: This strategy is used to spice up the dry, uninspiring task of sorting a small selection of information cards relating to an enquiry. As the name suggests, pupils need to be up on their feet, in their groups trying to work out who should be in position as front runner with the most pertinent, important or best information from the selection.

See Encouraging Debate, Building Arguments and Disciplinary Literacy.

OFSTED DEEP DIVES History deep dives have been a frequent aspect of Ofsted inspections under the new framework since September 2019, including those in Hampshire. This guidance explains what a history subject deep dive under the new framework will involve. For each of the 6 elements of a deep dive there are questions on the history curriculum provided to help school senior leaders, history leaders and history staff evaluate and explain your current curriculum intent, implementation and impact.

OTHER RESOURCES There are also resources designed to help you build an effective curriculum:

    • GCSE paper student guides, guiding principles for revision, revision ideas and examples,

    • Guidance and exemplar of how you should plan your history curriculum effectively in the long term and medium term,

    • A self-evaluation tool to help understand the strengths and areas in need of development in the leadership of the history department.

Coming soon to Moodle+… Over the next year we plan to provide more Primary materials on the relevance of the concept of Cultural Capital to social mobility in history and more Secondary guidance on the development of evidential thinking and developing a historical narrative. Leadership In Moodle+ you will find a variety of resources created by the HIAS general primary and secondary teams to support the improvement of Leadership, Management, Curriculum, Teaching & Learning and other whole school areas – in Primary and Secondary. Our intention is to offer resources that support schools to continually improve outcomes for learners; complement and challenge current practice as well as providing resources that can be used by leaders with others. All training materials and resources can be adopted and adapted to meet the needs of individual schools.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary…

CURRICULUM REVIEW TOOL & GUIDANCE This tool is to support your review of your whole school curriculum intentions. A variety of research-based prompts have been drawn together to stimulate your thinking. A clear sequence of questions guides a structured thought process that begins with clarifying aims, values and context. It next draws out some of the key teaching and learning priorities for consideration, including prompts for considering inclusion and the needs of the disadvantaged. The curriculum is viewed holistically both as subjects, with web links to some of the best sites for further ideas, and through opportunities for learning outside of lessons.

PRIMARY CURRICULUM CONFERENCE CASE STUDIES We have begun collecting together a rich array of case studies where leaders have thought about what they want for their children and how that is exemplified in their school curriculum. The ideas presented are sometimes challenging, sometimes familiar and always encouraging. Our hope is that you might want to contribute further case studies and share widely with others.

REVIEWING USE OF ASSESSMENT DATA There are a series of slides that can be used to stimulate discussion about how a school could reflect on current practice to ensure that they make effective use of assessment data and have a clear understanding of what to do next. It could be used with senior or middle leaders, governors or whole staff groups. How could you efficiently analyse data so that it prompts action and alignment. What data do you actually need so you are able to eliminate unnecessary workload?

Art In Moodle+ you will find a range of materials that provide support and inspiration for the leadership, teaching and learning in all areas of the subject in Primary and Secondary schools. Some resources aim to be used to directly support and structure classroom requirements for successful and rich learning opportunities. Other materials provide support and challenge for the leadership and management needs of the subject. These can all be adapted and personalised by you. Over time, we intend to develop resources that reflect the rich and diverse nature of the subject. These will be influenced by teachers, leaders, national and local foci and subject requirements.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ Primary… PLANNING Scheme of work examples are provided that can be adapted for the needs of your classes in school. Inspired by artists, craftsmakers, designers and architects to appeal to EYFS – Year 6. The planning gives enough detail to teach, but also enables schools to adapt these for the needs of their own cohort and even different year groups and Key Stages. It is intended that ideas can be adapted for classrooms, art days / weeks and clubs. Associated PowerPoint resources to support some planning are provided for some SOW which can be supplemented according to their use, for use with children or for sharing art planning ideas for staff training. Over time, we plan to build up resources to support the contextual studies for the primary art curriculum.

INTENT, IMPLEMENTATION, IMPACT With the change in the Ofsted framework, materials are available to support a ‘deep dive’ in the subject. These will continue to be added to overtime as needs are identified.

PROGRESSION, REFLECTION, ASSESSMENT Resources to support teacher CPD and materials to use in the classroom will gradually be added to support understanding about age-related expectations and considerations for progression, reflection and assessment.

SUBJECT LEADERSHIP A range of materials and examples of practice is gradually being developed to support your needs to oversee the subject and for strategic leadership. For instance, some examples are for long term planning, medium term planning, planning checklists, KS4 data information together with a range of writing prompts and cards. As Ofsted are visiting art for subject inspections, more information is being added to support and stimulate your practice.

KEY STAGE 3 Resources include examples of planning that provided for a range of skills and starting points to immerse your pupils into experiences across skills, materials and the visual elements. Resources also include materials to enhance the knowledge and understanding about a range of artists, craftsmakers, designers and architects and appreciation of the creative industries.

KEY STAGE 4 Resources are available that include ‘prompts for writing’. This aims to support the recent requirement to write about art at KS4 and the need for analysis and critical thinking to support the GCSE requirements. Examples of checklists and other teaching and learning resources are available and will be added to steadily.

Coming soon to Moodle+… Over the next year further art resources and materials for primary and secondary schools will be developed. These will intend to assist you with your needs to plan and teach a rich art curriculum, provide high expectations and challenge practice with learning opportunities that enable access to a range of resources and experiences. Further materials will also be added to as identified to support your preparation for subject ‘deep dives’. We will also be developing work around climate crisis to develop art responses.

Special Educational Needs In our new Moodle+ pages you will find a variety of resources created by the HIAS SEND team to support the improvement of teaching and learning of pupils with SEND. Our intention is to offer resources that support schools to continually improve outcomes for learners and remove barriers to learning as well as supporting SENCos to lead provision effectively and efficiently. We aim to develop and grow resources over time to reflect the needs and requests of teachers and leaders.

A taster of what is available on Moodle+ for SEN…

PRIMARY RESOURCES The SEND section of Moodle+ includes a range of materials to support staff and provide resources for SENCOs to develop provision for pupils with SEND. From research articles to skills audits, our Moodle+ documents have been carefully tailored to maximise your understanding of your roles and responsibilities in school.

SECONDARY RESOURCES The Secondary SEND section of Moodle+ contains resources designed to support staff and provide resources for SENCOs to develop provision for pupils with SEND. These documents give ideas and examples of how to work within and between subjects and with other leaders on initiatives and developments such as implementing the Gatsby benchmarks for pupils with SEND for example.

Coming soon to Moodle+… For Primary, we will be looking at Provision Maps and how they can be used to support SENCos and applying for EHCPs. For Secondary, we’ll be creating a series of 10 minute briefings on hot topics in education for pupils with SEND for SENCOs to use in meetings with staff groups at all levels. These will include PowerPoint slides and handouts to provide a framework to build upon or use as a stand-alone resource.
