February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time

From Our Pastor I wrote that I was going to say more about the Sacraments. Well, the most difficult Sacrament for many to un-derstand is Confirmation. What exactly is it? Many see it as little more than graduation. I remember that I couldn’t wait to be confirmed because then I could stop going to C.C.D. Is that all that it is? Confirmation is the Sacrament where we take the responsibility to live the life of a disciple, and God gives us the grace we need to do it. In the scriptures Jesus tells us what the life of discipleship entails. He tells us that disciples love their friends and they love their enemies. He says that when someone strikes a disciple on the right cheek, the disciple turns and offers them the other. Jesus tells Peter that his disciples don’t forgive those who hurt them seven times, but every time. Most importantly Jesus tells each of us that if we want to be a disciple we must be willing to imitate him to the point where we take up our cross and follow him. The fact is that, if we listen to what Jesus tells us, the life of a disciple is hard. It is so hard that God has given us this spe-cial Sacrament to help us live it. The Church teaches us that, in Confirmation, we receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Under-standing, Counsel, Knowledge, Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. The gifts are not magic. When I was con-firmed in the eighth grade I wasn’t suddenly filled with Wisdom, or I didn’t instantly posses great knowledge. What happened was that, in receiving the fullness of the Spirit, I was given the gift of having the potential to be so much more. God gave me the potential to love the way Christ calls his disciples to love; to forgive the way His disciples are called to forgive; to walk the path that disciples are asked to walk. When someone is confirmed they are given the gifts of the Spirit. Every confirmed person is given the poten-tial to be so much more than they can be on their own. For some, sadly, those gifts may forever remain only potential. For the gifts to bear fruit we must try to cooperate with the grace of God. If we are people of prayer; if we strive to live the life of discipleship; if we allow the Eucharist to nourish us and Confession to rec-oncile us, then those gifts can and will produce fruit in our lives. God Bless, Fr. Jack

FINANCES: The collection for the Offertory for the weekend of February 9/10 was $5,618.00. The budgeted amount needed per week is $8,000 to deal with the present operating deficit. Thank you for your generosity. If you are unable to be with us during a particular weekend, please do your best to make up your missed dona-tion. Thank you for your continued support.

NEXT WEEK’S SECOND COLLECTION will support the Church in those underdeveloped areas of the world. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Church in Africa and in Central and Eastern Europe and three important na-tional Catholic missions: the Military Archdiocese, Home Missions, and the Black and Indian Missions.

From Catholic Education to Addiction Recovery Services to Faith Community Nursing for the elderly, more than 50 critical ministries enrich parish life and the lives of those who turn to the Church for Assistance. This past week, many of you received a letter from Cardinal Sean requesting your support of these life changing programs. We hope that you will prayerfully consider pledging your support. Please find more information about this life-changing work at bostoncatholicappeal.org and make sure to view our latest video about the Appeal. Thank you!
