CliffNotes

When I was growing up in the 60s,I learned at an early age thatwomen were driven way beyond

making peanut butter and jellysandwiches. My best friend Ron and Iknew this because both our moms had

built long, dedicated careers as educators. My mom had taught nearly everygrade in "grammar" school while Ron's mom, Estelle, was changingstudents' lives by teaching high school English. Both were extremelyadmired and respected.

In today's business world, many books have been published about runningsuccessful companies based on the same principles of being a "Mom." Inmy view, women have always had an innate ability to manage chaos; tomulti-task, problem solve, negotiate, operate and, most importantly, execute. It is no wonder that women business leaders are excelling at sucha fast rate in cyberspace, profitability, job creation, and board service. Hereare some facts:

Women OnlineMore than half (55 percent) of Maryland's women business owners reportusing social media for their companies. Facebook leads the way, with 35percent citing usage of the popular social networking tool. Only 13 percentreport using Twitter.*

Passion over ProfitFor 53 percent of women business owners in Maryland, passion for theirwork as opposed to financial success is the primary motivator for stayingin business.*

Women Creating JobsOver a recent 10-year period, the number of women-owned businesses inthe U.S. grew by 44 percent, twice as fast as men-owned firms. Over thesame period, women-owned firms added 500,000 jobs.

Women on BoardsWomen held 9.2 percent of seats on the boards of 86 public companiesbased in Maryland in 2010, the same as in 2009. But the raw numbers fell- 65 women sat on boards in 2010, down from 71 in 2009. Twenty-eightpublic companies in Maryland had no women on their boards and nowomen executive officers.**

Here are a few women business leaders who are making their mark. Wehope you enjoy reading about them and give them an opportunity to meetwith you and help your business thrive too.

Enjoy,
