A MESSAGE FROM OUR GUILD CO-PRESIDENTS Dear Sisters,

Spring is my favorite time of year in the Valley, everything is in bloom, the days are perfect for a walk or bike ride, and we can all enjoy dining outside with God’s beauty everywhere. We are blessed to live here.

We are also thankful to Our Lady’s Guild members for all they contribute to making the organization run smoothly with programs and activities that give something to everyone. Toni and I are so grateful for all of your help and support these last 2 years. We congratulate our new slate of Officers for the 2016-2017 year, and thank them for coming forward and ensuring that The Guild will enjoy another great year. We appreciate all of the members that were at the last meeting and helped in the discussion about the future of Our Lady’s Guild, it was very encouraging to know the support will be there as we explore ways to keep The Guild the special group it has always been. We hope to see everyone at the Appreciation Brunch, May 17th, we know there have been many ladies working very hard to ensure a successful day. We will begin with 8:00 Mass where the new Board will be inducted with the Brunch and fun following. Thank you all again for your support and help the last 2 years. We have 22 new members this year and we encourage you all to sign up for an interest group or project, it is the best way to meet friends and really get involved. God Bless, Johanna and Toni

JOIN THE FAN CLUB: Thanks to the generosity of the Our Lady of Joy Parish thirty seven

households on the San Carlos Apache Reservation will enjoy the cooling comfort a fan can provide during the upcoming hot summer months. Over the last five weeks, 37 new or slightly used fans of all sizes were donated. Many of the San Carlos residents go without air conditioning, so fans are needed and appreciated. If you still wish to join our "Fan Club", please contact Jody Svitak - 970-333-8578. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

OUTREACH: The Guild, which is open to all women of Our Lady of Joy Parish, works diligently to support

a multitude of needs in the community. Our emphasis is on children and women, but occasionally we have a request for other needs. We still have funds to distribute, but here is a listing from the past fiscal year, June 2015 through April 2016. Our Lady’s Guild has given financial support to the following Outreach requests: $300 - Phoenix Diocesan Prison Ministry, Bibles for inmates, $500 - Sue Worford, purchase thread/beads to make rosaries for our military, $1000 - Our Lady of Joy Pre-school for tuition assistance, $500 - Annunciation Catholic School “Virtue” program, $1000 - Basha’s gift cards to St Charles School at San Carlos, $300 - Greater Paradise Valley Reading Council to purchase books, $255 - St. Vincent de Paul Dream Center (proceeds from white elephant sale), $500 - Cactus Shadows High School “Grad Night 2016” – safe haven, $1000 - Foothills Caring Corps, $300 - Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery, $1000 - Maggie’s Place, $3000 - First Way Pregnancy Center , $1000 - Arizona Helping Hands (caring for foster children in our community) TOTAL = $10,655 There are Outreach forms in the church office, in the Guild mailbox behind the office or can be requested from the Outreach Chairwoman, Carol Loignon by e-mail at [email protected].

Good Morning Ladies, we have been told everyone enjoys reading the newsletter, so with that in mind, we are in need of your help! Since the Our Lady’s Guild Newsletter is our main source of communication and an amazing tool to keep our members informed, updated and connected with our meetings, events, interest group happenings, calendar, birthdays, what our President has to say, and most importantly with each other, we are hoping & praying a few willing and fun loving women will step up to help produce a

newsletter edition once or twice a year. That’s all; one or two, it’s not many. There are nine (9) editions throughout the year. Our committee has three members who have agreed to continue for another year, Barb Kerner, Sharon Forbes, and Pat Montforte. I’m not able to help out this year or next since I have another commitment, but I can say that for the last 15 years or more, I have been involved with the Guild Newsletter and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it. It has been an easy way to improve the little bit of skills I have. Please consider doing one or two editions. The skills needed are being able to work in “Word” or “Publisher”. We have the template in both already set up, so you just have to fill in the blanks. I promise it’s fun and a great creative outlet.

If you are the slightest bit interested, we can explain the whole process to you, so the Newsletter can continue to come to your inbox or mailbox monthly. Contact Nina Filippi, at [email protected], 602-524- 9092; or Barbara Kerner, at [email protected], 480-575- 0188. Some of us work in Publisher others in Word so we are able to help with either.

THE INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS FOR MAY

Universal: Respect for Women - That in every country of the world, women may be honored and respected and that their essential contribution to society may be highly esteemed.

Evangelization: Holy Rosary - That families, communities, and groups may pray the Holy Rosary for evangelization and peace.

INTEREST GROUPS AND LEADERS HIKING CLUB Bernadette La Corte. [email protected].

We will hike on Monday and/or Thursday every week through May. This means that you can hike on Mondays or Thursdays or both days – if your schedule permits. You do not need to call and let anyone know if you will or will not hike – just show up. To keep things simple, we will hike the same trail Monday and Thursday.

HIKING CLUB cont’d: There will be no group hiking during the summer, but we will start up again Oct. 3. All hikes will meet at the trailhead. FYI…There is a $6/car entrance fee into Cave Creek Recreation Area, so carpooling might be a good idea. (Meeting up at the Lowe’s parking lot at Cave Creek Rd. and Carefree Hwy works great.) Just a couple reminders: The best time to hydrate is the day before you hike. Don't wait until you get on the trail, it's too late by then. Eat something before the hike. A high protein breakfast, such as a half bagel, topped with peanut butter and honey is a good choice. Also, carry a snack with you. Wear hiking shoes with good traction, some trails are slippery. Bring a wide brimmed hat. Even when it's cool the sun is still very intense. Don't forget your sunscreen. Happy Trails!

MAY HIKING SCHEDULE

May 2nd, 5th, 9th and 12th Spur Crossing - 44000 N. Spur Cross Rd. We'll meet at Lowe's at 7:30.

You’re Invited!

Hello Our Lady’s Guild, Our Lady of Joy Church and Preschool are hosting the Chamber of Commerce Monthly mixer on May 11th from 5:30 – 7 pm in the church courtyard. Please see the attached invitation if you wish to attend. It should be a great night of meeting new people in the community. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the preschool office, 480-346-346-3059 or by email [email protected].

The Faces of Mary presentation was an enlightening mini-retreat. Barbara Gowan presented images and information about the way people around the world revere Our Blessed Mother. So many evoked memories connected with my exposure to Our Lady from childhood. Other images were completely new to me. Part of the presentation included beautiful Marian music, again many old favorites from childhood. I was completely intrigued with the flowers associated with Mary. This presentation was a lovely gift and will be remembered. Lena Beale, President-elect, Our Lady’s Guild Our Lady of Joy Church - Carefree, AZ

The Faces of Mary Retreat

presented by Barbara Gowan

Saturday, May 14, 9am - noon, Parish Hall

Free registration - 480-488-2229 Pope Francis asks, “Do we allow ourselves to be illumined by the faith of Mary, who is our Mother? Or do we think of her as distant, as someone too different from us? Perhaps it will do us good to rediscover Mary as the model and figure of the Church in this faith that she possessed!” Take this opportunity to reflect, journal, pray and discover Mary as a model of faith and charity. See her life unfold through sacred art. Explore her roles as mother and queen. Learn about flower legends associated with Mary. It’s time to reacquaint yourself with the face of our heavenly mother. On this prayerful journey, participants will have the opportunity to be reflective on the life of Mary, to contemplate how they can be led to Jesus through her words and actions, and to compose a prayer to the Blessed Virgin. If you would like to sign up to bring morning treats or help facilitate the discussion at the table for the retreat, please contact Barbara at [email protected] or 480-502-8697. Thank you. Barbara Gowan is an award-winning children’s author and teaching artist. Her children’s books, R is for Rosary and Picturing Mary, inspired her to delve further into the life of the Blessed Mother and to write The Faces of Mary for adults. Barbara is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and co-founder of the Catholic Kids Book Club. Learn more at the website, www.CatholicKidsBookClub.com. Her books will be available to purchase at the workshop.
