Page 1 Dear Parents, Friends and Students of Our Lady Star of the Sea Welcome: A warm welcome to Noah Piercey (Year 1), Nari Piercey (PP) and Riley Thomas (Year 1) who have all joined our fabulous school community. I hope you have felt welcomed since arriving and I know that you will love every minute of being part of the awesome OLSOTS community. Announcement: Congratulations to Vanessa Harkess (mother of Ashton Year 4 & Spencer Year 1) who was voted in as our School Board Chair for the remainder of the 2019 school year. Vanessa is a wonderful advocate for our school and will seamlessly move into this important role. Thanks Vanessa! End of Year: During the past fortnight, all parents should have received a text from the school confirming that the last day for students for 2019 is Friday 13 December. This announcement now means that you can finally book that much needed summer holiday to Bali (along with the remainder of Western Australia). Confirmation: Last Sunday, six students from Year 6 made the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Gerard was in Esperance to celebrate this special occasion with the candidates and their families. We welcomed Bishop to our school on Friday 9 August where he met with the students as part of their final preparations. He also had lunch with the staff and visited the classrooms. I would like to thank all the members of the Confirmation team for preparing the students for this very special Sacrament, as it was a great success. 2019 Term 3 Monday 19 August - Friday 30 August Book Fair Wednesday 23 August Book Week Dress Up Day Parade at 9am Sock It To Poverty Gold Coin Donation Thursday 22 August - Sunday 25 August Music Festival Wednesday 28 August - Thursday 29 August School Photos Friday 30 August Father’s Day Breakfast Performance Assembly Hosts Yr 1 Prayer Kindy Footy Colours Day Gold Coin Donation UNIFORM SHOP Open Thursdays 8:30 - 9am 2:30 – 3:30pm School Board Meeting TBA Parents & Friends Association Thursday 17 October 7:30pm Bay of Isles 16 August 2019

Music Festival: On behalf of the OLSOTS community, we wish Mrs Nielson and the choir made up of Year 3 & 4 students the best of luck when they perform as part of the Esperance Music Festival on Friday 23 August. We were able to enjoy their first on stage rehearsal today at Assembly, they sound ready to perform along with students from all around Esperance at the event next week. Father’s Day: I don’t know about you; however, I feel like it was just Mother’s Day!! Father’s Day is just around the corner and that means it's time for our OLSOTS Father’s Day Brekky on Friday 30 August. Please fill out the yellow form that will be coming home today and return it to school ASAP, so we can order the right amount of bacon, eggs and buns for the day. If you can, please stick around after breakfast to watch our Kindergarten students lead a special prayer and a performance from our Year 1 students in the Hall at 9am. Footy Colours Day: The students are encouraged to wear their footy colours on Friday 30 August and bring in a gold coin donation to go towards young people living with cancer. God Bless and stay classy OLSOTS … Steve Blake … Principal

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS NEWS Mrs Lorna Russell

Book Week / Mission: This year we will have our book week dress up day on Wednesday 21 August. There will be a parade in the school hall at 9.00, all are welcome to come and watch. There will be a choice to dress up as a book character or wear silly socks. The silly socks is part of a social justice initiative to raise money for Catholic Missions. If you choose to wear silly socks for Sock It To Poverty please wear with your uniform and don’t forget to donate a gold coin to the cause.

Sock it to Poverty!

Sock it to Poverty is an initiative of Catholic Mission. It is another way in which our school can fundraise and engage in advocacy and formation activities for Catholic Mission throughout the year. The ‘sock it to something’ concept is an Australian expression that means to make a stance in a strong and direct way. We want to invite you to help us strike out at social issues such as poverty, child labour, child trafficking, homelessness and lack of education and to do so we need your practical support.

SCHOOL BANKING

Due to a lack of participation in our Commonwealth School Banking program,

we have decided as a school that School Banking will cease for the remainder

of the year.

We have struggled to find a replacement for Vanessa Harkess as School

Banking Coordinator and our student participants have reduced in number

significantly over the past 2 years.

If anyone wishes to see our School Banking program resume in 2020 please

see a P & F Representative or alternatively Principal Steve Blake.
