THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
Dear Friends,
Pope Francis has seemed to win over the world with his simple way of presenting the faith.
He is an inspiration to all of us. In an address six years ago to workers of the papal household
he said:
We are already at the end of the Christmas Season and we all have been moved by the wonder
of God made Child in the Grotto of Bethlehem, by the amazement that the Son of God
became, for love of us, the Son of Mary that he made himself small and fragile. We should be
vigilant and pray that this interior light does not fade and that we can carry in our daily life,
in the family and at work, the joy of the faith, which is expressed in charity, in benevolence
and in tenderness. (Address of Pope Francis to the Gentlemen of the Papal Household and
their families: Clementine Hall Friday, 10 January 2014)
I like this quote because it makes a connection between the interior light that is Christ and the
believer’s task to shine forth that light to the world. We have a two-fold task as believers who
are called to be evangelizers. First and foremost we have to foster our own faith. We have to
be men and women of prayer and reflection, we have to learn and grow in knowledge and
wisdom. Our second task is the one given to us in our apostolate; we are called to shine forth
that light of Christ to the world. If we are honest these two tasks can be a challenge. We are
left sometimes with the sense of failing on one or the other of our tasks.
I forget that prayer is not my last resort but the first task of my existence. I forget sometimes
that the light is not a reflection of myself, but of the one who created, redeemed and sanctified
me. I forget that I need to be firmly in the embrace of the Lord, before I open my arms in
embrace of those around me.
There is a joy in our faith, a joy that sometimes we let get squashed because we are busy or
over-extended. There is a joy in our faith that sometimes we let get trampled by the burdens
and pains of life. There is a joy in our faith, that comes not from success in our tasks but in the
promise of eternity, a joy that comes not from our own store of work and worry, but from the
very heart of Christ our savior.
Let the light shine forth unto the world. Witness the faith that has been the gift of God in our
lives. Be the joyous disciples that we are called to be.
We peer into the stable in Bethlehem and a smiling baby reaches his arms toward us. We peer
– with trepidation to the crest of Calvary and the God made Man stretches his arms between
heaven and earth to save us. We peer into the cave on Easter morn and the angel proclaims
our salvation to us. We peer into the upper room on Pentecost and we see the light of the
Spirit descending on the apostles.
On this feast of the Presentation of Jesus –Candlemas -- keep that light shining brightly!
Thank you for all you do for our parish.
