Please join us in prayer this week for :
Fourth Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 23, 2018
From the Pastor:
You’ve no doubt heard the song “Mary, did you know?” Whether you like it or not, here’s the beautiful thing about it: It gets us focused on Mary and the Christ child we are about to welcome into our hearts and homes and lives and world. Here’s how Saint Ambrose thought about Mary; maybe make it a meditation during these next days:
"O Mary, you did not doubt, you believed and received the just reward of your faith. “Blessed are you that have be-lieved.” But we too are blessed because we have heard and have believed: every soul that believes, conceives and be-gets the word of God and recognizes his works.
O Mary, obtain for each of us your spirit of glorifying the Lord; that each of us may have your spirit of rejoicing in God Though you alone are mother of Christ physically, yet through faith Christ is begotten by all; help me, O Mary, to receive within me the Word of God.”
Don’t let the Nativity scene in your home or at any church you walk by or into be a mere decoration. Use it as a prompt for prayer. Look at Mary and Joseph and Jesus. Ask them to come into your life in renewed ways this Christ-mas.
With love and prayers,
Fr. Francis

CHRISTMAS LETTER FROM FR. FRANCIS
My dear Brothers and Sisters:
I begin with a personal and heartfelt wish for each of you for a joy
filled Christmas and Spirit filled new year, 2019. I also want to thank you all for
your prayers, support, appreciation, Christmas greetings and gifts and, above all,
for the joy you bring to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish community. I am so
grateful to God for placing me as your pastor and to be loved by you and being able
to love you in return. You truly bring tremendous joy into my priestly ministry.
As we come close to the end of this year and beginning of another new year, it
is inspiring to recount the number of blessings and graces God has brought into our
parish community. Time has gone by so quickly. I have started the 5th
year as your
pastor!
Prayerfully reflecting on 2018, we see that God has blessed our Parish
community with 54 newly baptized beautiful children. We had buried 49 beloved pa-
rishioners, married 10 loving couples, Confirmed 48 adolescents, and 44 children
received First Holy Communion. This is truly a sign of our parish growth in strength
and unity.
Our Chapel has a special place in the hearts of many of our parishioners. Many
of you share unforgettable and personal memories with the chapel. While we have
not made any additional renovations this year, I am thankful and grateful to God
and to all of you for your generous contributions and prayerful support which allows
us to maintain this parish treasure..
This year has been a continued year of blessing too for our ORATORIAN FA-
THERS. We are so thankful to God for His continued blessings and graces upon the
Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.
Many of you are so thankful for our Liturgy, Learning and Outreach commit-
tee. They are doing tremendous work both spiritually and physically. We had two
“Taize” prayer and meditations evenings, one within time of Lent and the other just
recently in Advent; sponsored a series of Coffee and Conversations with Fr. George,
and collected food and school supplies for those in need.
The St. Monica Prayer Group already celebrated its 3rd
anniversary. It is very
important to have them pray for our families and our children. Without prayers we
are so weak, and all our activities are worthless. This group meets every Tuesday
evening to imitate St. Monica’s commitment to pray for their children, especially
those facing challenges.

(Christmas Letter from Fr. Francis, cont’d:)
We have also new ministry, the Daughters of St. Anne , designed for those who are
widowed, divorced, separated, or never married. Monthly Masses, social interaction
and trips have attracted 60-70 men and women since its inception this year.
The pilgrimage to Jordan and Holy Land, organized by the Oratory, went well.
Around 40 people joined us, enjoyed their visit there and all came back safely. We
thank God for that. This was a very good occasion to walk in the land where Jesus
lived. They took this opportunity to pray for the Oratory members and the mission and
people they serve including our beloved parish in Tappan.
Thank you for your support for our Parish, especially in our Christmas collection. I
truly appreciate your generous support and contributions. We encourage you to use on-
line giving both for your convenience and to help ensure a predictable parish income.
I would like to encourage you to use modern technology and social media such as
our website, Face Book, Flock Note, daily readings, etc. to stay in touch with what’s go-
ing on in our parish. It will help all of us to shorten our announcements.
God willing, in the new year 2019, we would like to invest time, talent and re-
sources in our Religious program and help our children grow in their faith and come
closer to Jesus. We have 410 children in our RE program and around 50 volunteers
catechists and teachers.
As some of you know we were enrolled by the Archdiocese of New York for “Renew
and Rebuild campaign” to support important archdiocesan programs and ministries
and future activities in our parish. I will keep you posted about upcoming events.
Christmas is a time of gratitude and on your behalf I want to thank all of the
people who work tirelessly “ behind the scenes “ the many, many volunteers and Par-
ish Office Staff, whose efforts every day help make our parish a true family.
I will end this Christmas letter by inviting you to give each other the most beauti-
ful gift of Christmas in the words of saint John “love one another, because love is from
God and God is Love.”
As a symbol of our appreciation please accept a gift book from Matthew Kelly –
“The Biggest Lie in The History of Christianity.” which will be distributed at all Masses
on Christmas
I love you all with all my heart and…once again, on behalf of all the Oratorian
Fathers, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Joyful Happy New Year!
With my love and prayers,
Fr. Francis

Christmas Giving to our Parish
Our special, annual Christmas Collection, fills a very important role in the financial health of our parish. Just as is the case with your own home, the Christmas Collection provides the resources needed to support major maintenance projects in our parish home, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, as well as allowing us to have a reserve of funds available for unexpected and often costly emergencies.
Please use the envelope that is found in your packet or be sure to add Christmas Donation to your on-line con-tributions l and be as generous as you can.
God Bless You !

The Children’s Page ….. 4th Sunday of Advent
The Greatest Gift of All: The Gift of God’s Love
Scripture: When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and
Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you
among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" Luke 1:41-42 (NIV)
A favorite movie for many people is "The Sound of Music." In that movie, there is a song called "My Fa-vorite Things." Some of you may have seen the movie and you may know that song. If so, you will re-member that the character named Maria, sings about her "favorite things." One of the things that she mentions in that song is "brown paper packages tied up with string."
On Christmas morning, we will wake up to find a lot of packages under the tree. Packages wrapped in brightly colored paper and tied up with pretty ribbons and bows. What if there was one package under the tree wrapped in plain brown paper tied up with string -- and what if that package had your name on it? Would that be the package you would choose to open first? I don't think so! After all, a gift is sup-posed to come in a beautiful package, isn't it?
That is why a lot of people have missed out on the gift that God sent to them. You see, God's Gift didn't come in a beautifully wrapped package. God sent Jesus, His only Son, as His gift to us. His mother was a young virgin... his earthly father was a poor carpenter... he was born in a stable. Not a very pretty pack-age, is it? But do you know what? It was the greatest gift the world has ever known. It was the gift of salvation and it had your name on it!
The Bible tells us that when Mary found out that she had been chosen to be the one to deliver God's gift to the world, she was filled with joy. She hurried to the home of Elizabeth to share the good news. When Elizabeth heard the news, she ex-claimed in a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.”
Well, the Lord has fulfilled his promises to us too. He has sent us the gift of His love, but some people are so busy unwrapping the beauti-fully wrapped packages that this world offers that they have missed out on the greatest gift. Maybe it is because it came wrapped in brown paper tied up with string.
Dear Father, we are thankful that you loved us so much that you sent your only Son to be our Savior. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Well, the Lord has fulfilled his promises to us too. He has sent us the gift of His love, but some people are so busy unwrapping the beautifully wrapped packages that this world offers that they have missed out on the greatest gift. Maybe it is be-cause it came wrapped in brown paper tied up with string.
Dear Father, we are thankful that you loved us
so much that you sent your only Son to be our
