‘HOSPITALITY’

All of us have great friends in our parish. I hope we have!! But there is no house where we are more welcome than in our community church. Our best friend is here – our most generous host. Are we worthy guests?

Our First Scripture Reading is all about hospitality. Abraham entertains three guests under a tree. He puts them and us in the shade!

St Paul labours to bring us news of the hospitable God. His house is open to all – Jew and Pagan alike.

Hospitality again in the Gospel – Martha and Mary. Mary gets on Martha’s nerves but Mary gets on Christ’s wave-length. Both women exemplify hospitality in different ways. Martha “on her feet.” Mary “at His”.

The ultimate in friendship and love is welcoming the Lord into our lives.

Lord Jesus, you welcome us to your table every week-end at Mass. We welcome others in your name into our homes.

“Guest is God”

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless.

The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to

remedy this kind of poverty.

CHURCH STRENGTHENING It was with great joy that we received this week a letter from Cardinal John Dew giving his consent and blessing to the St Patrick’s Wainuiomata Strengthening Project. We have the Hutt City Council Resource Consent and now the Cardinal’s Blessing. IT’S ALL GOOD!!

On Sunday 24th July 2016 at 2:00pm the Church Building Committee will host another meeting of the St Patrick’s Community (a sequel to the meeting held on 07 June 2015).

This meeting is to let you all know:

A time frame for the Building Project (Stage 1).

The last Sunday Mass before the church closes will be 7 August, 9:00am. Through the kindness of The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in The Strand we will be able to hold our weekend Masses in their church. We are most grateful to them.

You will learn how the planned project will be done and what you can expect to see.

You will learn what the cost of the work will be and how it will be funded.

You will be able to give your ideas as to what you would like to see by placing them in a box on the table in the church. But we need to be mindful of the importance of ensuring and respecting the sacredness when planning the interior of our Church. We need your suggestions as quickly as possible before our planned meeting (24/07/2016).

We need to plan how we are to clear the church building before the work commences. The contents of the church will be taken to the Church Hall at Rata Street for storage.

We need many hands to do this work – please volunteer – Please don’t think someone else will do it.

The strengthening work is expected to be completed before Christmas. It will be a very challenging time for all. Your continuing prayers for the work of the project are essential.

Please be aware the meeting will be for Stage 1 – Strengthening and Improvements to the Church. Stage II –The Community Hall will come after the strengthening work has been completed. We need to apply for Grants to assist with funding of this hall (with your help and contributions).

The Church Fundraising committee are working well to raise the necessary funds. Your continued financial help is essential to the Stage II project.

Please mark your calendar and come along on Sunday 24th July 2016

We need your support.

SENIORS Its about time we had a get together - Do You Agree??

On Friday 22 July 2016 we are planning a pizza/chip luncheon together in the church. Please mark your calendar and join with us for this “catch up” time.

Please let us know if you are coming so we can order correct quantities.

Sr Therese (564 4159) or Alan (564 6904) Cost: $5.00 please give this to Sr Therese during the usual Friday morning cuppa.

There will be raffles, so hopefully you are lucky. Also there will be an opportunity to purchase (at good prices) nice jigsaw puzzles (through the kindness of Margaret Benge).

This will be our last event before the church is moved - a memorable milestone. Hopefully you will come along and enjoy the time together.

GET INVOLVED Euthanasia/assisted suicide is once again a topic of debate in New Zealand as we await the upcoming findings from the Health Select Committee Investigation into Ending One’s Life, the possibility of the introduction of David Seymour’s End of Life Bill to Parliament and other attempts to legalise euthanasia and/or assisted suicide.

A 5 minute video will be shown on 24 July 2016 at all Masses in the Parish of the Holy Spirit. In the video, different New Zealanders raise concerns about euthanasia/assisted suicide from a range of professional, cultural, ethical, societal, pastoral and personal perspectives. Extra resources (e.g. questions for personal reflection and further group discussion) on this issue, will be given to parishioners after Mass.

Continued from last week…

2016-The Year of Mercy

Spiritual Works of Mercy... are acts of compassion, by which we help our neighbours with their emotional and spiritual needs.

Works of Mercy can be directed not only toward the needs of

the body, but the needs of the soul as well. Indeed, the most serious form of poverty of all can be the poverty of the spirit, not only because it drains life of all energy, joy, and sense of purpose, but also because it is the one kind of poverty that can last forever.

Indeed the human spirit longs for the nourishment of truth, goodness, and beauty if it is to be healthy and strong and if it is to grow in sanctification and be prepared for the life to come.

That’s why, in addition to the corporal works of mercy, the church has outlined the spiritual works of mercy . Look to these works as preventative medicine for poverty of the spirit.

Admonish Sinners Gossip, swearing, - practise tough love by

indicating that these are not ok. In humility we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we fall at times.

“Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye”. (Mt 7.5)
