From Fr. Mark’s Desk: Twenty first Sunday in Ordinary Time: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” We have read and listened to passages from the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John. In these passages, Jesus uses phrases such as ‘I AM the Bread of Life’, ‘this is the Living Bread’, ‘All who eat this Bread, shall never die’. The inten on of this discourse is to direct the a en on of the apostles and our a en on toward eternal life. The Bread is the Bread of Heaven. In the Eucharist we share in this great rela onship and encounter with Jesus Christ, and then extend that rela onship and encounter into our lives. This extension into our own lives is difficult for some and is difficult for some of the apostles. Relying on the Bread that is eternal directs our a en on away from ourselves, and directs it toward Christ and the needs of others especially the poor. Our lives and ac ons as followers of Christ become daily en-counters with the members of the Body of Christ and feeding that membership on the path of Life. If we become self-centered or seek spiritual food from another source, we may grow weary, we could even die. Thus, Peter comes to an awareness…’Master, to whom shall we go?’ In other words, having received the Bread of Life, what else could there be? We focus on Jesus in the Eucharist because He is the source of our Life. Without Jesus, we wither and die. The Mass (Eucharist) “does not endeavor to raise us up to something we are not: it re-minds us that we have already been to some extent transformed: it assures us that the begin-nings of transforma on are a pledge and foreshadowing of its comple on…It tells us over and over again that we are Christ in this world, and that He lives in us: and that the last, most per-fect fulfillment of all is now, at this moment, by the theological virtue of hope, placed in our hands. Thus, the liturgy of earth is necessarily one with the liturgy of heaven. We are at the same me in the desert and in the Promised Land.” (Thomas Merton). Jesus, “You have the words of everlas ng life”. Reminder of the revised Mass schedule: Beginning Sunday September 5th at Our Lady of the Ridge ~The Weekend Mass schedule will be: Saturday 5pm, Sunday 9am and 11am. Beginning Sunday September 12th at St. Linus ~The Sunday Noon Mass will return. The Weekend Mass schedule will be: Saturday 4pm, Sun-day 8am, 10am, and Noon Have a great week! Fr. Mark Walter

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

LOVE IN OUR WORK In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks “Do you also want to leave?” We must ask ourselves if we really want to hear the good news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of God able to break into our conscious-ness, change us and call us to hear the cries of the poor? This month, through your gifts, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the poor by assisting with food and helping with util-ity, rent and other bills. ©svdpusa.org

DECISIONS There is an axiom that states, “Not to decide is to decide.” This saying was popular in the turbulent times of the Vietnam War. It urged us not to allow others to answer the moral questions raised by our nation’s involvement in that terrible conflict, but to decide for ourselves. Making such choices is never easy. Avoiding them is common. Jesus, for his part, was not only a gallant risk-taker, but a clear decision-maker. As he pursued the mission to which the Fa-ther called him, he continually decided for us and for the Father. He worked hard to lay out a scenario that would enable others to make similar choices. Never did he make decisions for others or force others into decisions, even decisions that had eternal ramifica-tions. Jesus is inviting us to make such decisions to-day. We won’t be absolutely sure. What is sure, however, is the command that issues from God’s word: Take the risk. Decide! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Stewardship… Have you ever taken a moment to figure out how much time, on the average, you spend a week volun-teering in your church or in your community? “Do not neglect good deeds and generosity. God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind.” (Hebrews 3:16) Have you ever taken some time to figure out what percentage of your income goes to the church and other charitable causes? Stewardship is planned giving and does not leave giving to chance. It challenges us to plan. It asks us to appraise—deliberately—what we are doing with out time, our talent and our treasure. ©archchicago.org

FEAST OF FAITH Come, Spirit!

The presider at the Eucharist can choose from among a number of different Eucharis c Prayers, all of which follow a similar pa ern. Almost always, they begin with an epiclesis, a Greek word that means “invoca on upon” or “calling over here.” At this moment in the prayer, the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gi s of bread and wine that we have brought to the altar: “Father, we bring you these gi s. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of your Son” (Eucharis c Prayer III). The words of the prayer are accompanied by the ritual gesture of the laying on of hands, the ancient sign of the gi of the Spirit, which is also used in most sacramental celebra-

ons, from the rite of confirma on to the ordina on of deacons, priests, and bishops. Liturgists some mes call this first epiclesis the epiclesis of consecra on. Later in the Eucharis c Prayer, there will be another epiclesis, the epiclesis of communion, as the priest asks that the Holy Spirit be sent upon us to transform us. “Grant that we, who are nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ” (Eucharis c Prayer III). —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
