Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Chris , and we make a special effort to appreciate the deep mystery of the Eucharist which unites us to Christ and the Church he founded on the rock of Peter’s faith. Our reading from John’s Gospel gives us the heart of the gi that we receive in the Eucharist, the very person of Jesus Christ. As the Lord himself tells the crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:51). The Lord wants us to have the gi of life to the full and he assures us by giving us the gi of himself. In speaking on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted:

The Lord distributes for us the bread that is his Body, he makes himself a gi ; and we too experience ‘God’s solidarity’ with man, a solidarity that is never depleted, a solidarity that never ceases to amaze us: God makes himself close to us, in the sacrifice of the Cross he humbles himself, entering the darkness of death to give us his life which overcomes evil, selfishness and death. Jesus, this evening too, gives himself to us in the Eucharist, shares in our journey, indeed he makes himself food, the true food that sustains our life also in moments when the road becomes hard-going and obstacles slow our steps. And in the Eucharist the Lord makes us walk on his road, that of service, of sharing, of giving; and if it is shared, that li le we have, that li le we are, becomes riches, for the power of God — which is the power of love — comes down into our poverty to transform it.

In the Eucharist we receive Christ himself and we become closely joined to him through the gi of his Body and Blood that we receive. As we eat and drink his Body and Blood in the Eucharist we are to become his presence in the world. The Eucharist is what makes us Church and makes each of us members of the Body of Christ. The Eucharist is the most precious gi that we have as Catholics because it is the gi of the Lord Jesus himself.

In many places parishes commemorate the Solemnity of Corpus Chris with a Eucharis c procession to honor the presence of Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Benedict XVI spoke about this custom and associated it with the conclusion of the Easter season, the Solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity that we celebrated last week, and the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that will be celebrated on June 23rd this year:

A er the strong season of the liturgical year which, focusing on Easter, spreads over three months - first the 40 days of Lent, then the 50 days of Easter de - the liturgy has us celebrate three Feasts which instead have a ‘synthe c’ character: the Most Holy Trinity, then Corpus Chris , and lastly, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What is the precise significance of today’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ? The answer is given to us in the fundamental ac ons of this celebra on we are carrying out: first of all we gather around the altar of the Lord, to be together in his presence; secondly, there will be the procession, that is walking with the Lord; and lastly, kneeling before the Lord, adora on, which already begins in the Mass and accompanies the en re procession but culminates in the final moment of the Eucharis c Blessing when we all prostrate ourselves before the One who stooped down to us and gave his life for us.

The image of our life of faith as a procession is a beau ful one. We are always on a journey, walking with the Lord Jesus and striving to become more like him. Last week we focused on the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity and in so doing acknowledged that as we adore the Holy Trinity we must remember that we are part of the divine life through the power of the Holy Spirit who consecrates us in bap sm.

This week we focus on the food that strengthens us to be worthy of the divine life that we share and on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart we will celebrate the love of Christ who has given us the gi of eternal life. As we celebrate this great Feast of Corpus Chris it is good to remember that the Body and Blood of Christ that we receive in the Eucharist is the center of our lives as Catholics. As we gather for Mass it is good to take some me to kneel before the Lord in Blessed Sacrament and to ask him to make us ever grateful for the gi of the Eucharist which we celebrate around his altar and to ask for the grace to become his presence for others through the gi of his Body and Blood. Through the Eucharist the Lord Jesus gives us the gi of eternal life, not only in the world to come, but in the here and now. We have his life within us and so are capable of doing great things in his name: “Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me” (6:57). As we con nue our journey with the Lord our hearts are filled with gra tude for the gi of his Body and Blood.

Today we honor our fathers. On this Father’s Day we give thanks to God for the gi of our fathers and we pray that those fathers who have gone home to the Lord will find peace in the presence of the Good Shepherd. Our fathers give us the sense of security and confidence that we need in order to have a solid founda on for our lives. Their presence is a gi in our lives and we pray for the grace to be able to emulate their selfless love of their children. God bless all of the fathers of our parish with health, happiness, and peace of heart and many years to celebrate the gi of life surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Happy Father’s Day!

P F ’ D

God our merciful Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young in years and young at heart and we pray that through the intercession of Saint Joseph, foster father of your Son, Jesus Christ, they may receive your blessing and protec on.

We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their voca on; May they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray that their fidelity to the voca on that you yourself give them return to them as a blessing.

We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. Protect their sons and daughters and keep them close to you always.

We pray for men who are not fathers but s ll mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice.

We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. May they have peace in the presence of the Good Shepherd who calls them to eternal life and the

reward of all of those who serve you. We make all of our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen

What makes a church a cathedral? It is not necessarily the size of the building, nor its an quity nor its beauty – although it may have all these things. Rather, a church is a cathedral because the cathedra (chair), the seat of the Bishop, “the sign of his teaching office and pastoral power in the diocesan church” (Ceremonial of Bishops) is located in this church, which has been designated for that role by the Holy See. On December 9, 1937, by the Apostolic Bull Recta Cuiusvis, Pope Pius XI designated the Church of Saint John the Bap st in Paterson as the Cathedral for the new Diocese of Paterson, erected by virtue of the same pon fical decree, and comprising Passaic, Morris and Sussex Coun es in northwestern New Jersey.

As early as 1816, i nerant priests, Rev. Philip Larisey, O.S.A. and Rev. Arthur Landgill, offered Mass in private homes in Paterson every few weeks. In 1820, New York’s second Bishop, John Connolly, O.P. sent one of his eight priests, newly-ordained Father Richard Bulger to serve the missions of northern New Jersey with his residence at Paterson. A na ve of Kilkenny, Ireland, Bulger was the first priest to be ordained in New York City, and the first priest to permanently reside in New Jersey. Under Bulger’s leadership, and at a cost of $1,000, a wood-frame church was built on the corner of Mill and Market Streets in 1821. It is believed the name was chosen in honor of Bishop Connolly. Almost immediately the frame church was inadequate and plans were made to expand. A er a dona on of land from Roswell Colt, the head of the Society for Useful Manufactures, New York’s third bishop, John DuBois, S.S. came to Paterson on November 6, 1828 to lay the cornerstone for a new brownstone church on Oliver Street. The new Saint John’s was constructed by Andrew Derrom at a cost of $15,000. A century later, the first Bishop of Paterson would be given a house on the avenue named for Derrom to use as a residence.

On October 30, 1863, Bishop James R. Bayley, the first Bishop of Newark, named Father William McNulty, a 34-year-old na ve of Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland, as 13th Pastor of Saint John’s. He was des ned to become a man of legend, remaining at Saint John’s for nearly 59 years un l his death on June 18, 1922. Paterson was growing rapidly – 7,000 residents in 1840, 19,000 in 1860, 51,000 in 1880, and 101,000 in 1900 – but McNulty was more than up for the challenges presented by that growth. By the me of McNulty’s death Paterson had sixteen Catholic churches, a full Catholic school system, a Catholic hospital, nursing home, and orphanage, almost all of it traceable to McNulty’s efforts.

The Oliver Street church, already enlarged once, was too small for the growing congrega on, and on a site too small to admit further enlarging. Besides, McNulty did not want his church on a side street. In his mind, there was only one fi ng place for the Catholic church in Paterson – on the corner of Main and Grand Streets. McNulty maneuvered to obtain sixteen lots on that corner for $10,000 and on September 11, 1865, Bishop Bayley, a er Confirming 203 parishioners, laid the cornerstone for the third Saint John’s before an es mated crowd of 10,000.

Patrick C. Kiely, a prominent New York City architect, was engaged to design a neo-Gothic church for Saint John’s. (Kiley designed some 900 churches including the cathedrals of Boston, Chicago, Erie and Providence). The stone was quarried in Li le Falls, brought to Paterson on the Morris Canal, and dressed on the site. The slate roofing came from England. Similar to medieval cathedrals, St. John’s was built by “day’s work,” the volunteer labor contributed by members of the parish. The church was sufficiently complete to allow for its dedica on on July 31, 1870. Bishop William Wood of Philadelphia subs tuted for Bishop Bayley of Newark who was s ll in Rome at the First Va can Council.

While now in use, St. John’s was by no means complete. In the next twenty years many features, both exterior and interior, were finished. In 1872 McNulty purchased four addi onal lots for the rectory. In 1878 the temporary altar brought over from the Oliver Street church was replaced by a grand altar and reredos, painted to resemble marble, donated by Senator John Hinchcliffe. The original temporary wood structure that allowed Mass to be said on the site during construc on was replaced by a new Lady Chapel connected to the main church. The minarets and spire on the tower were completed and a new organ installed.

The dimensions of the new church were 180 feet deep, and 88 feet across. The interior stone columns rise to a height of

By 1887, the parish had succeeded in paying off the $232,000 cost of Saint John’s. Newark’s third Bishop, Winand M. Wigger, came to Paterson on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29, 1890 to consecrate the church. At the me it was a rare ceremony since it was only celebrated for a church free of debt. By the me of the consecra on the four “evangelist” windows in the sanctuary, as well as the two windows facing Main Street (Saints John the Bap st and Dominic), manufactured in Innsbruck, Austria, had already been installed. The remainder of the windows were installed as donors came forward.

Almost from the beginning, Dean McNulty (he was named Dean of Passaic and Bergen Coun es in 1886) was forced to deny rumors that he had pretensions of cathedral status for the new Saint John’s. The size of the building alone, as well as the unusual placement of the pulpit on the “Epistle side” of the sanctuary – thus leaving room for a possible cathedra on the Gospel side – helped fuel those rumors. Newark’s second Bishop, Michael A. Corrigan, speculated about a possible future Diocese of Paterson (or Jersey City) when the Trenton Diocese was split from Newark in 1881.

Of course, like any home, a church is never finished. Over the next century there would be many addi ons, renova ons and restora ons at Saint John’s. In 1927 Dean McNulty’s immediate successor, Msgr. Edward Quirk added new ligh ng, a sound system, new Sta ons of the Cross, and a new marble pulpit – donated by William Fanning – reposi oned on the “Gospel side” of the sanctuary. In early 1938, Monsignor James T. Delehanty, the first Vicar General of the new Paterson Diocese, renovated the sanctuary in order to accommodate the church’s new cathedral status – including moving the Fanning Pulpit back to the original loca on! In 1940, a new window with scenes from the life of Saint John the Bap st, executed by the Payne Studios of Paterson, was installed on the rear wall of the sanctuary. At the me it was the second largest stained glass window in the country. In 1965, following the liturgical changes called for by the Second Va can Council, Monsignor Michael Hart installed a temporary “altar of sacrifice” facing the congrega on.

The logis cal difficul es presented by the revised liturgy a er Va can II, as well as the impending 50th Anniversary of the crea on of the diocese helped spark a movement for a major renova on of the Cathedral. The decision was undertaken in 1985 under Paterson’s sixth Bishop, Frank J. Rodimer. In addi on to addressing a number of structural issues, the renova on included a complete redesign of the liturgical space, the enlarging of the sacristy, and the reposi oning of the tabernacle, choir and organ. Bishop Rodimer rededicated the Cathedral on the morning of the Diocesan Golden Jubilee, December 9, 1987. Subsequent changes have included installing six windows of Saints from the Americas in the choir lo , a new Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini window over the Tower Entrance, and the installa on of air condi oning in 2003.

On September 20, 2010, a por on of the Cathedral ceiling collapsed, resul ng in the closing of the Cathedral for six and a half years. With the inspira on and constant support of Paterson’s seventh Bishop, Arthur J. Serratelli, the latest technology was used to study the Cathedral structure, resul ng in a comprehensive renova on which addressed structural, liturgical and prac cal issues. These included a redesign of the liturgical space, the return of the organ and choir to the choir lo (with the addi on of an elevator), a reposi oning of the tabernacle, and a new altar, cathedra and pulpit. For the first me, a baldacchino was introduced to set off the altar. Several historic features were repurposed during this renova on. Part of the 1878 Hinchcliffe reredos and the 1987 altar are u lized in the Eucharis c reserva on space. The Rood Screen incorporates part of the Mission Cross first installed in Saint John’s on January 23, 1881. The 1927 Sta ons of the Cross have been refurbished, as well as the marble statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The 1987 statues of Saints Peter and Paul, recalling the Cathedral’s consecra on in 1890, and reminding all of the link between our local Church and the Church Universal, have been retained.

A contemporary account described Dean McNulty’s vision for Saint John’s as, “…building a church large enough to afford every Catholic in the city all the conveniences of a ending Mass and the sacraments and at the same me he intended to erect a structure which would be a credit to the liberality and enterprise of the congrega on.” Today, as we approach the Diocesan 80th anniversary in December and look forward to the Cathedral Parish bicentennial in three years, the Cathedral of Saint John the Bap st, the largest church edifice in the Paterson Diocese, and the oldest cathedral in New Jersey, once again fulfills Dean McNulty’s vision as a beau ful home for the Diocesan Church.

Prayer for the Rededication of the Cathedral

To you, O Good and Gracious God, who built your holy Church

upon the apostles with Jesus Christ its cornerstone, we come with thanksgiving for allowing us

to rebuild our Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Listen graciously to our prayers

that what we have made beautiful on earth may truly be your dwelling place

where the faith is proclaimed, the sacraments celebrated and charity increased.

As we rededicate our mother church, help us to grow into the temple of your glory,

so that, constantly renewed by your grace, we may be gathered by your hand

into the heavenly city, the New Jerusalem. Through Christ our Lord.

AMEN
