Sharon Annual Celebration of Martin Luther King Day
Monday, January 18, 10:00 a.m.
Unitarian Church of Sharon - 4 N. Main St. Sponsored by the Sharon Clergy Associa-tion
Informed by the example and teachings of Martin Luther
King, we will explore together “Being Good
Neighbors: appreciating diversity, connecting across
differences, welcoming the stranger, challenging stereo-
types and prejudices, moving from tolerance to under-
standing, and how can we work for genuine justice in
America.”
Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Wel-
comes Deacon Frank Trembley
On Christmas Eve, Cardinal Sean O’Mal-
ley wrote to me to announce that Our Lady
of Sorrows Parish will be blessed with a
deacon to serve the Parish. I will introduce
Deacon Frank and his wife, Ginny, at all
the Masses next weekend.

Please join us Saturday, January 9, to celebrate the many
years Chris has dedicated to the service of Our Lady of

Thank You Church Decorators
The church looked beautiful for Christmas! A big thank
you to all the wonderful parishioners who came Thursday,
December 24, to decorate the church for the Christmas
season: Christine Murphy, Carole Usaj, Marry Harrold,
Ines Mota, Carlos and Alejandra Aguilar, Helga Stockton,
Liz Igoe, Jelena Bosnjak, Amelia Solomon, Marguerite
Murphy, Noel Loftus, Andy Conneely, Sarah Glover, Pat
Doherty, Brendan and Aidan Murphy and Aisling and Keira Lydeard.
Special thanks to Kathy Hawes who orders the flowers and
supplies every year and leads all the decoration efforts and
to Ruth Bendinelli for taking care of the plants through the
season.
A note to the parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows:
On September 2, 1996, I came to Our Lady
of Sorrows Parish for my first day on the
job. Having been hired by Fr. Bullock, I
was excited and nervous as I had not had a
“real” job for over 20 years. Now it is almost 20 years
later and I am leaving for the next phase of my life, my
retirement.
Over the years, I learned so much from Fr. Bullock, Fr.
Scott, Deacon Mike and now Fr. Vinny. I have enor-
mously enjoyed my time here and have met so many won-
derful people, many whom I call dear friends.
Living nearby in Walpole, I know I will see many of you
at daily Mass or for events at Our Lady of Sorrows and I
will keep in touch with my friends and co-workers.
I want to say thank you to all of you, the parishioners, for
making my job here so enjoyable. This has been one of
my life’s greatest blessings and I am grateful to you and to
God for leading me here.
Best wishes to all of you during this wonderful season of
Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year
to you all.
Love, Chris
P.S. Please email Lynn at [email protected]. She
will be able and willing to help you.
“Jesus Christ is the face of God’s mercy.” The Year of Mercy calls us to em-
brace and embody God’s mercy,
receiving and bestowing mercy. We are asked to make
acts of mercy a priority in our lives, similar to how we de-
termine our New Year’s resolutions. The “revolution of
tenderness” demands our attention be placed on acts of
forgiveness and reconciliation, kindness and compassion.
As we focus on our personal and communal need for the
conversion of our hearts and actions, upcoming events are
being planned to support us; all are welcome!
January 3, Sunday: The Unitarian Universalist Church of
Sharon is sponsoring an outdoor town-wide Vigil from
noon to 1 p.m. to express solidarity with our Muslim
neighbors during the recent escalating hostile environment
toward our Muslim sisters and brothers. All are welcome!
January 18, Monday: The Sharon Interfaith Clergy Asso-
ciates is hosting its Annual Martin Luther King Celebra-
tion at 10 a.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church of
Sharon. All are welcome to attend this Service, which will
focus on “Being a Good Neighbor,” while engaging all
residents of Sharon and beyond. The Interfaith Clergy will
be announcing new initiatives at this service as well.
Please attend!
January 30 or 31: We will welcome Fr. Steven Wil-
bricht, CSC, of Stonehill College as he guides us further
into the Year of Mercy. After each mass, he will invite us
to gather, reflect and discuss how our experience of God’s
mercy, particularly in the liturgy, requires us to respond
and extend mercy to others. Mark your calendars to set
aside time for renewal. Sign Ups begin next week!
February 7: We will pair our Annual Souper Bowl Sun-
day with Rice Bowl this year. As we share our abundance
with others by donating cans of soup for the Ilse Marks
Food Pantry, we will complement our local efforts with
Catholic Relief Services’ global Rice Bowl project.
Throughout Lent, we will offer prayers, alms and fasting
for the poorest of the poor.

Collection – December 27
The average cost to run the parish is $9,500 per week and
our expectation is that 70% ($6,700 will come from the
weekly offertory. On December 27, the parishioners con-
tributed $6,432.
Annual Collection
The Annual Collection is under way. The Annual Collec-
tion is an important source of funding for the parish's
many expenses, including salaries for our talented staff as
well as property utilities and maintenance costs. We ask
for your prayerful consideration to assist us in meeting our
goal of raising $73,000.
To date, $37,005 has been contributed to the Annual Col-
lection from 125 parishioners. Thank you for your gener-
osity.
From Senior Deacon Mike:
This weekend, we celebrate the Epiphany
of the Lord. The gospel narrative is from
St. Matthew and offers a glimpse of the
birth of Jesus contrary to the version of the
birth offered by St. Luke.
The emphasis is more on worshipping Jesus
shortly after the birth.
Further, Matthew introduces a group of people identified
only by their lifestyle. They were described as Magi or
‘Wisemen’. Matthew does not indicate the number of
them or their gender.
Our tradition suggests there were three men because they
brought three gifts to pay homage to the child.
And, in tradition, history has even named the three indi-
viduals as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.
Christmas Collection $7,330 has been contributed to the Clergy Benefit Trust
Christmas Collection for our retired priests. This figure
does not include donations through ParishPay which will
be added next week. If you did not give to this special
collection, it is not too late. A check will be sent to the
Archdiocese next week for the Christmas Collection. Epiphany
Some kids in the parish school
were doing an informal survey about New Year’s resolu-
tions. No one in our school is sure why we make them,
since no one seems able to keep them, even though they
focus on something we can do or change that will make us
better people, or help us accomplish our goals. Have you
made your New Year’s resolution? More importantly, will
you keep it?
New Year’s Day marks a new beginning, another notch in
the life that measures time’s progress. We often use the
image of a journey to describe it. Journeys are trips with a
purpose and we journey through time, through faith,
through life, with a purpose—something that we do that
gives us a sense of meaning and value.
In the spirit of this feast day, here’s a spiritual resolution
that is one we can keep. Make progress in your spiritual
journey. Set a goal, make a plan, and then accomplish it.
Choose something that will make a difference in the way
you pray, or believe or practice your faith. Write it out and
put it in a place where you will read it often, reminding
yourself to stay on course. A year from now, you’ll be
amazed at just how far you’ve come! ~James Gaffney, © 2009 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing
