From the Pastor’s Desk

Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Louis, MO

The common theme of today’s readings is metamorpho-sis or transformation. The readings invite us to work with the assistance of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives by renewing them during Lent, and to radiate the glory and grace of the transfigured Lord which we have received to all around us by our Spirit-filled lives. Scripture lessons: The first reading describes the transformation of a pagan patriarch into a believer in the one God. His name will be transformed from Abram to Abraham and his small family into a great nation. All Abram has to do is to obey the Lord God’s command, and he does so. The second reading, taken from St. Paul’s second letter to Timothy, explains the type of Lenten transformation expected of us. We are trans-formed when we recognize the hand of a loving, provid-ing and disciplining God behind all our hardships, pain and suffering and try our best to grow in holiness by cooperating with the grace of God given to us through Jesus and his Gospel. In the Transfiguration story in today’s Gospel, Jesus is revealed as a glorious fig-ure, superior to Moses and Elijah. The primary purpose of Jesus’ Transfiguration was to allow Jesus to consult his Heavenly Father in order to ascertain His plan for His Son’s suffering, death and Resurrection. The secondary aim was to make his chosen disciples aware of Jesus’ Divine glory, so that they might discard their worldly ambitions and dreams of a conquering political Messiah and might be strengthened in their time of tri-al. On the mountain, Jesus is identified by the Heavenly Voice as the Son of God. Thus, the transfiguration nar-rative is a Christophany, that is, a manifestation or rev-elation of who Jesus really is. Describing Jesus’ Trans-figuration, the Gospel gives us a glimpse of the Heaven-ly glory awaiting those who do God’s will by putting their trusting Faith in Him.

Life messages: #1 The Transubstantiation in the Holy Mass is the source of our strength. In each Holy Mass our offering of bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus under the appearances of bread and wine. Hence, just as the Transfiguration of Jesus strengthened the Apostles in their time of trial, each Holy Mass should be our source of Heavenly strength against our own temptations and a source of grace for the renewal of our lives during Lent. In addi-tion, communion with Jesus in prayer and especially in the Eucharist should be a source of daily transformation of both our minds and hearts, enabling us to see Jesus in every one of our brothers and sisters with whom we come in contact each day. #2 Each Sacrament that we receive transforms us. Baptism, for example, transforms us into sons and daughters of God and heirs of heaven. Confirmation makes us the temples of the Holy Spirit. By the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation, God brings back the sinner to the path of holiness. By receiving in Faith, the Sacra-ment of the Anointing of the Sick, we are spiritually, and sometimes physically, healed, and our sins are for-given. #3 A message of hope and encouragement. In moments of doubt, pain and suffering, disappointment and despair, we need mountain-top experiences to reach out to God and listen to His consoling words: “This is my beloved son/daughter in whom I am well pleased.” Our 'Lenten penance' will lead us to the 'Easter joy.'

Parish Mission Statement: We, the Catholic community of Our Lady of Sorrows, are disciples of Jesus Christ through our Bap-tism. Nourished by Word and Sacrament we seek to form adults, teens, and children in the ways of the Gospel, while welcoming new members to our parish and our Catholic faith. As a Eucharistic people, guided by the Holy Spirit, we minister to all, especially the ill, elderly, and those in need, through works of fellowship, charity and justice. We strive to continue the mission of our parish begun a

century ago through the prayerful intercession of Mary, Our Mother.

Parish Council Corner March, 2020

MARCH ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT – ST. VINCENT DE PAUL St. Vincent de Paul is a group of parishioners working together to help our neighbors in need. We visit our neighbors in their home. We talk with them, pray with them and get to know them. We bring food, help with utilities, provide beds, furniture and clothing from the thrift store. Sometimes the need is too big for us to handle alone. We get help from other St. Vincent de Paul Societies in our area. All of the parish-es in the Archdiocese are organized into a Council. We can ask the Council for help with getting a used car for a neighbor or prescription drugs. When there is a major disaster, St. Vincent de Paul is there to help. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was started in the United States 175 years ago. Our Lady of Sorrows was started in 1915. We have a long tradition of helping. St. Vincent de Paul once said that “no charity is foreign to the Society”. We will help anyone without regard to religion, race, or status. Everything we have to give to our neighbors comes from donations, most of it from the parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows. Each year we receive about $24,000 from parishioners and about $5,000 from other sources. We spend about $16,000 on utilities, $6,000 to supplement the food pantry and the rest goes to the other things we do. We believe that money sitting in the bank is not helping anyone so we try to spend enough so the bank account never gets very big. We have faith that God will provide and the folks at OLS have made it happen. The food donations are also important to us. We give to our neighbors about $14,000 in food each year. We make about 230 home visits to help about 780 people. Thank you for your generous donations. Keep St. Vincent on your grocery list.
