Church Building Not Required Today’s Gospel is a familiar passage, and the event is recorded in
all four of the Gospels. It is often understood that Jesus’ actions in the temple led to his arrest and crucifixion. One important distinction with John’s Gospel is that the author tends to reflect greater tension and animosity between Jesus and the Jewish authorities. This is related to the fact that the Gospel of John was written last, and its narrative reflects the growing divide between the Jewish and early Christian communities. What is really going on in the story presented today when Jesus erupts in anger at what is going on in the temple? The animal traders and moneychangers actually were required because often animal scarifies were offered and Roman coins had to be exchanged for Jewish coins. The problem Jesus had was all this business was happening in the center of the temple, “my Father’s house.” This activity should have been performed outside the temple, but as is common, people want to be as opportunistic as possible. This is how we let false gods enter our life and direct us and cloud our relationship with God. It is these false gods that make our faith shaky. We loose our focus. This is also the first Sunday in Lent when we hear Jesus offer a prediction of the events to come. At the time, even his disciples did not fully understand the suffering that Jesus was to endure. Jesus’ offers a prediction of his passion, metaphorically, when he says that he will destroy the temple and raise it up in three days. The temple, of course, is his resurrected body. And temple worship becomes less unnecessary because it is surpassed in the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. When we focus, deepen our prayer life, and commit to living the teachings of Jesus, we really find God in all things, and a church building is not required.

Stewardship How many gods do you put before God? Idols do not always take the shape of physical things. Those are easy to recognize. Many times, they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot, like pride, power, ego, time, or comfort.
