In this Mass we commemorate the beginning or “Institution” of the Eucharist by Jesus Christ. His familiar words were spoken first on this night, “This is my body” and “This is my blood” and “Do this in memory of me.” Each par- ish is only allowed one Mass on Holy Thursday. It is a Mass that especially marks our unity as Christians. That is why we have one multi-cultural Mass at OLPH. RITUALS There are many important features of the Mass. The Holy Oils, specially blessed each year by the Bishop, are processed into the church. These are the oils used in the sacraments of Bap- tism, Confirmation, Ordination, Anointing of the Sick, and to anoint those who are becoming Catholic. The Washing of the Feet is also a part of this special Mass, immediately after the homily. We remember that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. At the end of the Holy Thursday Mass, the tabernacle is emp- tied, and the altar is stripped bare. We are remembering that Christ is entering his sorrowful passion, a time of desolation. THE BLESSED SACRAMET The Blessed Sacrament is taken in a solemn procession to a special resting place, the Altar of Repose. The Catholic Church teaches that everyone should be encouraged to follow our Lord to his resting place on the Altar of Repose, and to spend some time with Him. We remember how he asked his disciples on the first Holy Thursday, “Could you not watch with me for one hour?” We encourage everyone to follow the procession to the Altar of Repose, and to spend some time with Our Lord. If you cannot spend one hour, even ten minutes would be good. If you cannot spend time with Him, please exit quietly. THE “SEMITAS” In our multicultural parish, we have a special tradition of semi- tas, which is a gift from the Hispanic community. These are small bread rolls, blessed by the priest, that are given solemnly to each family to take home. They are a kind of souvenir of the Eucharist. Some people eat the semitas with their family when they get home. Some people believe that they should keep the semitas in their homes and they will prevent the family from hunger in the coming year. This year, the semitas will be blessed and distributed at 6:30pm until 6:45pm by the fountain. Please do not eat the semitas in church. Take them home and share them with your family. Palm Sunday of the

Lord’s Passion

April 17, 2011

HOSAA! “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; ho-sanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). With these words the Church enters the holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. When the people of Je-rusalem cried out with their “hosannas,” they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of accla-mation that meant “Pray, save us.” The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring free-dom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in him. © Copyright, J. Domingo de Ramos de la

Pasión del Señor

17 de abril, 2011

¡HOSAA!

GET O THE BUS....is the name of a great organization, which partners with parishes in one special project every year. They reunite children with mothers or fathers who are in prison. These children sometimes have to go years without seeing their parent. The prisons are many miles away and these children have no other way to get there. This is a once a year event for the volunteering parishes, and this year our par-ish will be helping children have a Father's Day reunion with their Dads who are in the men's prison in San Luis Obispo. We will need donations of food items for the long trip, plus sup-plies and craft bags for the children. It will be a one day turn around, and it will be a very long day. Watch for future an-nouncements on items we need. This event means so much to these children--let's try to make it a huge success.
