OLPH History, Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Core Values

Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have

commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black

Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the

uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and

non-black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.

MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.

VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”

CORE VALUES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: We will always speak the truth, respect the opinions and roles of all parishioners, and value each person, always maintaining Christian charity in all of our actions.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH: We will seek to increase the understanding of our Catholic faith and expand our spiritual growth by participating in and supporting charitable and spiritual activities, in addition to attending Mass.

STEWARDSHIP: We will become involved in church activities and commit our time, talent and treasures.

INCLUSION: We will be open and inviting by extending ourselves to all by sharing in our parish life; thereby, reaffirming our vision of being actively visible in the community.

LEGACY: We will preserve our rich Black cultural history by respecting the past, continuing in service and faith in the present, and committing to the future of OLPH.

Tuesday Night 7:00 pm

Continuing “The Joy of the

Gospel”

Within normal family life, there are many opportunities for conflict. Jesus did not

promise us the absence of conflict in our lives. Instead, he gave us the gifts of peace,

forgiveness, and reconciliation so that we could reduce conflict. The measure of

Christian family life is not the absence of conflict, but the manner in which conflict is

resolved. Filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit, we ask Jesus to help us to bring peace

and forgiveness to situations of conflict in our families. As your family gathers, take this opportunity to examine how your family

resolves conflict. Recall a recent argument or disagreement and discuss how the conflict was resolved. Consider whether the conflict

was resolved peacefully, in the spirit of Jesus. If not, discuss alternatives that might be tried

in the future. Read together today’s Gospel, John 20:19-31. Recall that we have each

received Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit helps us to be people who

forgive others and seek peace. Pray together the Prayer to the Holy Spirit or the Peace

Prayer of Saint Francis.

Did you know? The more you give to God’s service,

the more He returns to you!

Prayer is an essential part of maintaining a strong intimate relationship with the Lord our God. Through faith prayer does

change things, and the Bible teaches us to pray without ceasing. As we continue to pray and know that God is able to

do all things but fail, we can walk in victory no matter what our circumstances.

Any parishioner who is sick or homebound and unable to attend Mass on Sunday may request to receive the Eucharist. Even if you are ill for a short period of time you are most welcome to receive a home visit. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements.

ENTERING THE HOSPITAL? Parishioners planning to

enter the hospital are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to admission. Also, because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes of a parishioner’s stay. Please notify the Rectory leaving the name of person, hospital and room number, also when the person returns home.

When NAMES can be removed from the prayer listings, PLEASE advise the Rectory 202-678-4999 or Doris Savoy 202-610-3751 or email [email protected].

"We are Easter People and Alleluia is our Song"

St. Augustine

We witness to the Joy of the Resurrection of Jesus and

invite others to join us. We do that by our very lives as

disciples called to be Missionary Disciples and we do that through: Stewardship Festival of Ministries,

May Procession, Ordinations, Confirmation, First Communtion,

and Pentecost

From the Pastor's Desk 3rd Sunday of Easter April 15th, 2018

Word of God- Our Sunday Readings continue to celebrate witnesses to the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord.

A genuine call to those who claim to be a disciple, to be a Catholic Christian, to know the Lord Jesus are called to keep His commandments(the 10 from OT and the three Great Commandments of Love found in the NT). Jesus visits the disciples, this time after walking with the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus where He explained the Scriptures and Broke the Bread of Life with them.

Stewardship Festival of Ministries is next Sunday! *****************************************************************************************

Parish Survey Results from 204 Parishioner Participants..... to be shared in parts and summary copies at the end.

Remember, that having taken this survey, reflecting on its meaning for us has some factual and speculative con-sequences. No plan or vision is in play here, just reflection and discussion. There is no intention of starting rumors either. Look at the factual responses and then let us move forward with prayerful reflection as will be appropriate. 1. What is your gender? _145- F & _59- M = Total- 204

2. Your age range _3 @ 16 to 30, _7@ 31 to 40, _20@41 to 50, _43@51 to 65, _91@ 66 to 80, _40@ 81+? Gender F-1 M-2 F-7 M-0 F-14 M-6 F-28 M-15 F-69 M-22 F-26 M-14 Hope you have been discussing the realities of our numbers and age ranges. it is motivation for reflection and discussion about the next two questions:

11. Have you heard the term Missionary Disciple? 16-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-65, 66-80, 81+? Yes 2 5 8 Total =15 26 66 25 Total =117 GTotal=132 No 1 2 11 Total =14 16 25 14 Total =55 GTotal=69 12. Do you understand the meaning of the term Missionary Disciple? 16-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-65, 66-80, 81+? Yes 1 5 16 Total =22 21 49 17 Total =87 GTotal=109 No 2 2 3 Total = 7 21 38 20 Total =79 GTotal=86

When you look at these numbers: A great majority have heard the term but it is nearly split down the middle as to what it means. Interestingly we have printed and provided copies of the explanation from Pope Francis twice(Once in the Lenten Folder and in a Lenten Bulletin. This past Sunday, Divine Mercy Sunday, the affirmation of Missionary Discipleship is lifted through Isaiah, who told the Israelites that they would be a light to the Nations, through Jesus' words in the Gospel, "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" and through the words of Jesus at the time of his Ascension will be "Go make Disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teach them all that I have commanded and know that I am with til the end of time." By Baptism we are all called to be disciples of Jesus. By Baptism, We are all "SENT", MISSIONED, COMISSIONED, to be Missionary Disciples. By our Love, Our Witness, our Reaching Out we seek to bring others to Jesus. As I mentioned in my homily remarking about how in Funerals, the deceased person has impacted 6 degrees not of separation, but rather connections(Family generations, Church Members, Co-workers, Classmates, and Neighbors). As Missionary Disciples are we impacting 6 degrees of connection? We usually can't do so all at one time or in any particular order, however being a missionary disciple of Jesus should be present at every connection. The question is are we ready to be a missionary disciple to reach for the 6 connections? to reach out to bring other's to Christ simply by our love and witness? to reach out to those fallen away from Jesus, those outside the church, those struggling with their faith and bring them to be part of the Body of Christ, the Church? to personally reach out to those who visit us in church and make them welcome? to take

advantage of the upcoming Stewardship Festival of Ministries next week and join one? to reach out and engage our

Young people ready yes to talk with them, but especially to listen to them? to join in the bi-annual evangelization walks in our neighborhood? to possibly join the Evangelization Committee to plan and carry out the plans to gather folks into the fold of HIS FLOCK? Pentecost is May 20th, the day we celebrate the Gift of the Holy Spirit given to the Church and renewing our commitment to the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ. Let us get ready!

Let us continue to Proclaim Alleluia

& Celebrate Easter Joys!!!
