fxäxÇà{ fâÇwtç Éy XtáàxÜ “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the
beginning and the end.” (Revelations 22:13) This is a reminder of how we should live our lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – putting God first in all that we do.
Not only when I am at Mass and parish activities, but when I am in the world, at work or at school. Living gratefully and generously is a lifestyle; it should influence how I
make all my daily decisions.

From the Desk of Father David
Volunteers sought to establish a Grounds Committee Looking for some volunteers who love the parish and working outdoors to spend a few hours manicuring the Prayer Garden. Right now it needs some serious TLC, weeding and trimming and getting in some summer plants. If you are inter-ested, please email Fr. David, [email protected].
The following is Part 2 of excerpts from my homily, delivered at the Mass of Thanksgiving of a friend
who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston two weeks ago: Stay strong, Father. Stay on message. Isaiah warns us that there are those who would cajole us not
to tell them the truth, but who instead insist that we tell them what they want to hear. Today we are faced with the “religion of the self.” Self-fulfillment has replaced self-sacrifice. But
Christianity is not a religion of entitlement. It is a religion of service and of sacrifice, not entitlement. Even the pope goes by the title “servant of the servants of God.” And every bishop is invited to wear the dalmatic of a deacon under the chasuble of a priest – reminding him that his ministry is still, and always will be, one of service.
Remember that the so-called “hard sayings” of Jesus are still part of the Good News. The call of Je-
sus is demanding. It draws us out of our comfort zones. It should never leave us complacent or lukewarm. We must let go of ourselves to embrace God and so share in His transfiguration. Only by sharing in His Cross can we hope to share in His Resurrection.
Avoid the cult of personality – we are teachers, and leaders, and pastors, not celebrities. At all times
be authentic – remain faithful to the Truth. The care of souls is an awesome responsibility. And while we tremble at the responsibility, we can take comfort in the faith. Be kind, but firm – that is the true hallmark of being pastoral. Be a father and a shepherd; be a leader. At the same time, be docile; learn from your col-leagues; never feel threatened by them. But do be discriminating in what you chose to adopt or to reject. Be kind to your brother priests. Never let ambition or envy get in the way of friendship or fraternal charity. Avoid gossip.
Parish leadership requires a firm but loving hand, and a willingness to make difficult decisions; and,
yes, a willingness to be to be unliked. We are called by Christ, not to be successful, but to be faithful. Our success is beyond our control. Christ will determine our success. But we can commit ourselves to being faithful. Our embrace of the faith is our choice. Being pastoral does not mean saying what people want to hear; it means proclaiming the truth; it means proclaiming the Gospel – courageously and unambiguously.
Never underestimate the power of truth. Sometimes the truth is an inconvenient thing. But the truth
is the truth, though no one believes it; and lie is still a lie, even though everyone believes it. Remember, we are called to change the world – not to be conformed to the world. Changing the rules does not bring free-dom. Only truth brings freedom. And truth does not change. G. K. Chesterton, that Master of Paradox and Apostle of Common Sense, once observed that “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult, and left untried.”
