OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

Who knows the mind of God? St. Paul (2nd reading) poses the question which has perplexed people since the beginning. God acts and humanity benefits, yet more often than not, God’s ways leave the human family confused, amazed or confounded. This means, God does not act like we do nor think like we think. Paul realizes this and proclaims: “Oh, the depths of the riches of wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are God’s judgments and unsearchable God’s ways!” The human condition, imperfect, frail and insecure, leads to finding strength and assurance in ways displeasing to God. The human need to be right, to be in control, to have its way and its violence in dealing with and all forms of dissent, disapproval or opposition has been the source of human pain ever since Adam & Eve were made to leave the garden of paradise. Amongst its many blind spots, wealth, greed, acclaim, influence, pleasure and righteousness have led to every form of violence recorded in history. Will God continue to intervene? That is our hope as people of faith in an ever growing population who drift further and further away from the principles and values God has put forth as life-giving, nurturing and sustaining. In Scripture, God often intervenes (1st reading) replacing tyrants, oppressors and evil rulers and leaders with someone faithful to God’s truths. St. Paul’s reflections on this are expressed above as he deals with the hard-heartedness of people who want it both ways, their way and God’s way, never aware of their blindness in deciding themselves what is God’s way even when God tells them otherwise! Welcome to the human race! The choice of Peter (Gospel) to head God’s church displays God’s goodness in dealing with human frailty for Peter has put his foot in his mouth time after time, failing to comprehend the meaning of Jesus’ words and actions, yet loyally believing Him to be the Son of God. Such is our story too. We believe, but so often ignore or misinterpret what Jesus is saying to us. Prevailing in sincerity is our hope for God never gives up on us. The only fear God has is our giving up on ourselves and each other. And the beat goes on.
