MARIAN HOME PILGRIMAGE PROGRAM

Have you signed up yet for our MarianHome Pilgrimage Program? We began ourprogram on the Feast of the ImmaculateConception 5 years ago and it stillcontinues today. What better way tocelebrate the New Year than by journeyingthrough it with our Blessed Mother? A sign-up sheet can be found on the bulletin

board at the back of Church. We encourage and invite eachfamily to sign up for a week to bring Our Blessed Mother intoyour home. You will pick up Mary after the 11AM Mass andreturn her the following week before the 5:30 PM Mass. Duringthe week that Mary spends with in your home, take the time todeepen your relationship with Jesus through His BlessedMother. Pray the rosary together as a family, place a prayerrequest in the prayer journal and be drawn closer to Our Lordand His Blessed Mother. Keep a rosary, scapular andpamphlet so that you can continue your journey with Mary.

LITURGY CORNER As January ends, how many of our big or littleNew Year Resolutions are still ‘alive and well’ atthis point? IF you are into the ‘resolutioncustom’, as some of us are, have you already

‘kissed those ideas goodbye’ getting back to the usual dailyroutine? Or are you still ‘strong-brave-and-true’ to yourintentions? Some resolutions are lighthearted and of varyingconsequences. Others can be monumental and life-alteringsuch as a decision to refrain from some addiction which mightbe slowly killing us! I have a good suggestion for a resolutionthat’s somewhere in the middle..Have you ever held a grudge? How did it feel? Is it soft and warm and just wonderful or coldand hard and very lonely? You know there are just so manyhappy, hopeful things in life to hold on to-a little baby’s finger,an honest compliment, a memory of a wonderful encounterwith a friend from long ago, a smile, a song, a possibility ortons of other things. If you recognize that there might be‘grudges’ in your life, let go of those old, cold barriers to peaceand latch onto the warm feeling that can only come from agenerous, forgiving heart. Your ‘almost-new-year’ will take ona new freedom and you will hardly believe just how warm andwelcoming your heart - and every part of you - will beprepared to show God’s life and love to the world around you.

FAITH AT HOMETalk to your children about Mass. If they areindifferent or don’t like to go to Mass, explainthat there are some things that we do becausethey are good for us, whether we feel like

doing those things are not. Mass is not about feelings. It isabout giving ourselves to God. It is about discoveringwhat purpose God has for our lives. The best way to helpchildren of all ages is by the witness of your own faith. Ifthey see that going to Mass gives meaning to your life, they will begin to search for that meaning in their ownlives. If you haven’t made any “new year resolutions” yet, maybe you can use the opportunity to share YOUR faithwith your son/daughter, by making the time each weekto attend one of our masses. You can reread the gospel(children’s version is available online) and discusstogether as a family what something in the readingmeant to you. This might be the best New Year Resolutionyou could ever make both for yourself and your child. (ifby chance you happen to miss a week, don’t worry -each week we have the freedom and privilege

My dear friends,

How wonderful it feels to be home again. I spent New Year’s with my family in Cuba and I didn’thave the opportunity to see you to wish you a Happy New Year full of love, faith and goodhealth. However, I did think about you during my time in Cuba and prayed for you.

On January 1st, I went to the Cathedral of Havana for the first Mass of the year, the Solemnity ofMary Mother of God. There, I prayed for all of you and for Our Lady of Mercy as a parish family.I asked Our Lady of Charity (the Patron of Cuba) to intercede for us here and to protect usduring the whole year 2018. I also gave thanks to God for sending me to this awesomecommunity which is OLM. Being in my own country was a great opportunity to really realize howblessed I am being here among you. I really missed you; I missed celebrating Mass for you andI missed our peaceful and faithful community.

The situation in Cuba only gets worse. It is very hard for families to survive. There is povertyand everything becomes really difficult. I ask you kindly to keep Cuba and the people there inyour prayers. People are more hopeless every year and it is sad. The Church also has a roughtime. I went on retreat with two of my former classmates in Cuba. Only the two of them remainin Cuba from a nice group of 20. It was good to be there with them and see everything theyhave to do to survive and live their ministry in such a difficult environment. I spent 5 days withthem praying and meditating and celebrating Mass. I had the opportunity to give thanks to Godfor the work I can do here with you freely and without pressure. I felt more than blessed.

Before I left I knew that our Christmas Collection was generous. I felt very happy. Yourcontribution is always welcome and very useful; thank you very much. Last year was a toughyear; the school was draining the parish and there were many payments to make. I also tried tomake things look better and the cost of the repairs was high. As I always say, what can we dowithout your generous help?

Just as I landed at Newark I opened my email and I found great news from Bill Kelly ourBookkeeper. We received a generous donation from a woman who passed away and put Our Lady of Mercy in her Will. Again, I felt blessed; what a relief to have some extra money. This woman has given in the past and now again she continues to help us even after her death. We should pray for her as a sign of gratitude and certainly we will say many masses for herhere in OLM. May God reward in Heaven her generous heart.

As you see we are beginning the New Year 2018 with many blessings. Let us give thanks toGod. May Our Parish Family grow in faith and number. May all of us and our families beblessed with health, love and peace. May we all feel the presence of our Loving God among usthis year and always. I am very happy to be back home with you again. God bless you all.

Fr. Roberto
