OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick

of our parish, especially: Linda VanSickell, Sue Lemba, Jeanette Warhol, Annmarie Roberts, Joe Mayer, and for the intentions you hold in your heart.

Please also remember the deceased of our parish especially: Edward Halvey, Joseph Papay, and Robert Post.

THE SANCTUARY LAMPS IN CHURCH burn this week in memory of Carlo Castoro.

LIGHT AN ONLINE CANDLE We know that Our Lord, Our Lady, and all the Saints hear and respond to our prayers. Light an online candle and share your prayer intention so we can pray with you as well. Click here to add your intention.

It seems only fair that we who have known some joy and peace within our experience of the Christian faith should make this happiness reach further to others.

ordained permanent deacon, to Our Lady of Mercy

and look forward to serving with him.

While I was in the seminary, a mentor once said to me

that to be a successful priest you have to do two

things – be there for your people at the worst times of

their lives (being there in the happy times is easy) and

make sure that they know that you love them. I prom-

ise you that I will do both of these things and hope to

serve you for many years to come.

Let us pray for each other as we begin this new chap-

ter of life together. I believe that God has a reason for

our paths to have crossed at this moment in time. He

is looking for us to be Christ-like examples of grace,

humility, gratitude, and joy in our lives as Catholics.

I look forward to each day with you.

In Christ’s Peace,

My Dear Parishioners and New Friends:

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. As

some of you may know, I was appointed by Cardinal

Tobin to become the Administrator here at Our Lady of

Mercy effective September 1, 2020. I have heard so

many wonderful things about Our Lady of Mercy and I

am excited to be here with all of you.

New Jersey is my home. I am the third of four children

born to Rose and Anthony D’Agostino. I was born in

Newark in 1966 and grew up in Belleville. My beloved

father, who passed away in 2015, was an educator with

the Newark school system. My beloved mom, who

passed away in 2008, was a stay-at-home mom and

worked as a receptionist when my siblings and I were

older. I graduated from Belleville High School in 1984.

After high school, I attended Rutgers University in New

Brunswick (Go RU!) and graduated in 1989 with a bache-

lor’s degree in Political Science and Philosophy. After

Rutgers, I attended New York Law School at night and

graduated in 1993 with a Juris Doctorate.

After graduating from law school, I practiced bankruptcy

law for 17 years at two Roseland-based law firms. Alt-

hough I felt as though I had the calling to the priesthood

since I was a young boy, I didn’t have the courage to

take that step. I didn’t think that it was possible that God

could be calling me! Yet, God was patient and persistent.

In 2010, at the age of 44 and after discerning God’s call, I

left my law practice and entered the seminary. I spent six

years at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall

and was ordained on May 28, 2016. I thank God every

day for being present to me on this journey.

I spent the first year of my priesthood at Saint Theresa’s

Church in Kenilworth. I was then asked by Cardinal Tobin

to move to Saint Elizabeth’s in Wyckoff to join the new

pastor there. During the three years that I served at St.

Elizabeth’s, I made many friends and learned a great

deal. I welcome this new assignment as Administrator of

your parish as an opportunity to get to know each of you

and to use my experience to serve you.

I already feel very much at home here in Park Ridge.

Father Patrick, Father Jae and I were in the seminary

together, and Monsignor Turro was my next-door neigh-

bor in the seminary. I would like to take this opportunity

to thank Father Patrick, Father Bob, Monsignor Turro,

Father Jae and Deacon Joseph, as well as all the won-

derful staff of Our Lady of Mercy, for “holding down the

fort” these last several months, especially during the pan-

demic.

I also know Michelle Powrie, our new school principal,

and her children from my time at Saint Elizabeth’s. I am

happy that Michelle and I are starting together here in

Park Ridge. I also welcome Deacon Ed, our newly

IS RCIA FOR YOU? There are many reasons why you may want to become involved in the RCIA. Do any of these fit you?

I have never been baptized.

I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don’t know what the next step may be.

I have been baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to become Catholic.

I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments.

Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encourage and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step! For more info, email John Rokoszak at [email protected] https://urolm.org/rcia

HELP NEEDED IN OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT—This year, our religious education department will be providing our students with online digital catechesis. We would like to ask for any volun- teers that can provide assistance with our technical preparation for the year using Google Classroom, Flipgrid, video recording, etc. It is a great opportunity for tech-savy high schoolers looking for service hours or any adults who may have experience with these tools in their professional capacity. If you can possibly provide some assistance and offer your expertise, please contact Evelyn Paglieri at [email protected]. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Fr. Jae,

Thank you for the ways you shared the Lord’s Love and taught His Word to the parishioners of OLM. We wish you well on your new assignment. May God bless you always.

“ZOOM Caregiver Support Group”

Wednesday, September 2, 2020 (Ongoing Every First Wednesday of the Month Through June)

7:30pm to 8:30pm Facilitated by

Patricia Preztunik, Care Manager

John Rokoszak, OLM Pastoral Associate

DISCUSSION TOPIC: “CAREGIVING DURING COVID”

Our Lady of Mercy Parish Ministry of Eldercare A ministry to provide support and education to individuals, families and caregivers

who are dealing with illness, aging issues and concerns.

The caregiver support group is designed to provide both emotional and educational support to families that

are caring for one or more individuals affected by various illnesses. These online sessions are available once

a month where caregivers, families and friends will be able to share feelings and information as well as learn

of options and resources available in the healthcare system. The group is open to individuals willing to share

their concerns and to act as a support system to others that are in the same challenging situation. Navigating

the healthcare system while caring for a loved one at the same time can be difficult and confusing.

This is especially true during this time of COVID-19.

To register for the ZOOM meeting, email OLM parishioner

Ron von Autenried ( [email protected] ) cell: 201-919-8748

Or call John Rokoszak at 201-264-6376.

Congratulations to all our First Eucharist Families

Go now, children, with the gift of Faith, that you might see God’s hand

in all your work and play.

Go now with the gift of Hope, that you might know God’s guidance,

which is keeping you safe.

Go now with the gift of Love, that you may offer love and

Care to all you meet.

Go now with the gift of Knowledge, remembering all that you have learned.

With God’s help, LIVE IT!

Go now children, with these words of Jesus in your hearts:

“I will not leave you alone; I am with you always”.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

Dear Jesus,

I believe that you are truly

present in the Most Holy

Sacrament of the Eucharist.

I love you above all things,

and I desire to receive your

Body and Blood. Since I can-

not at this moment receive

you sacramentally, come at

least spiritually into my

heart. Stay close to me, Jesus, so that I may

be close to all our sisters and brothers, espe-

cially those who are most in need of your

loving care. Amen.

A TIME FOR PRAYER

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Loving God, your Son, Jesus, has shown us that an open heart finds the way. Help me to find my way in this world. Keep my heart open to following Jesus' way of serving others in love. Give me the courage to accept the guidance you offer me through my family, my friends, and my parish com-munity. Through the Holy Spirit, you call me to a particular way of life. If it is the way of a priest, sister, brother or deacon, then help me to walk it in joyful service to your people.

With you, my God, I know I can find my way. Amen.

GUIDELINES WHEN ATTENDING MASS Due to COVID-19, we must limit the amount of parishioners in the church at one time. In order for us to open safely we must follow specific guidelines.

When you arrive, please check in with a staff member by the entrance to the Gathering Space doors facing the school. All other doors will be locked.

Please be early. Once Mass begins, the Gathering Space doors will be locked.

Social Distancing will be practiced. Expect that pews will be taped off, and households (even of one individual) are asked to keep six feet of separation from each other.

Masks must be worn for the duration of the Mass except for the brief moment when receiving Holy Communion, which will be distributed in the hand only.

We recommend that you bring your own hand sanitizer should you need it during Mass.

For your safety our church is cleaned and disinfected after every use, but no one should expect that they will be any safer from germs than in other public places.

There will be one single occupancy bathroom available for use located off the Gathering Space behind the Sacristy.

Each person must meet the health requirements for attending Church Liturgies (temperature 100.3˚F or below, no cough, no shortness of breath / breathing difficulty, no headache, no body aches, no recent loss of taste or smell, no sore throat, no recent contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19).

We look forward to celebrating Mass with you and your family! God bless you!
