PARISH STAFF
What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or have a letter signed to serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism should be parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To be considered active, one must have been registered in the parish for at least three months, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations.
In a community as large as Our Lady of Hope, our most effective means of verifying active participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes or electronic giving, such as Faith Direct. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster.
PARISH INFORMATION
Baptism & Baptism Class: Baptisms are held on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. The baptism class for parents is held one Saturday a month at 11:00 a.m. Please call the Parish Secretary to pre-register for the next available class. Sacrament of Matrimony: In accordance with the regulations of the Bishop of Arlington, couples must contact a priest and begin preparation at least six months prior to the wedding. Parish registration and active participation for a minimum of three months is required before preparation may begin. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time as living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to the future marriage.
First Communion: For Children: Generally, First Communion is received when a child is in second grade. Preparation for First Communion is a two year process, and students must complete both first and second grade classes before receiving Holy Communion. Please contact the Religious Education Office with questions. Sacramental Preparation for Adults (RCIA): Adults who wish to receive Baptism, First Communion, and/or Confirmation are invited to attend the Inquiry Class on Thursday evenings. Please contact the Parish Secretary or visit the website to register.

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Hope,
Christmas comes to us amid a pandemic unlike any most of us have experienced before. How welcome then Christmas must be! Once again, we celebrate the amazing reality that God became like us in every way. Fully divine and fully human, Jesus Christ the Son of God began his earthly life as a baby. In so doing, God reminds us that he made no mistake. We human beings, sinful as were are and can be, are precious in God’s sight.
These many months of the coronavirus have challenged us in so many ways. Yet, as the Incarnation reveals to us that God has not given up on us, Christmas is a time for us to renew our care for one another. Yes, as God in Christ desired to walk with us on our journey through life, may we be renewed in the desire to share each other’s bur-dens. Let us turn frequently to the scene of the Babe of Bethlehem in the manger – may every home have one! We need to contemplate again and again Baby Jesus with his arms open to each one of us. His love encourages us and renews us with hope. Let us, dear brothers and sis-ters, open our hearts again to Christ’s message of God’s love and, just as importantly, share that message with others.
The staff of Our Lady of Hope joins Father Willard and me in wishing everyone a most blessed Christmas and New Year. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Killian

“Where does God dwell?” is a question on the minds of many as we continue to adjust to the pandemic. Da-vid wanted to build an or-nate dwelling for the Ark of the Covenant, but God said, “No, that’s not what I had in mind!” The reading from Romans teaches us that God is present in the Word, and in Luke’s Gospel pas-sage today, Jesus is residing in the womb of Mary. We know that Jesus is present in the assembly gathered, the Koinonia, as well as within the Eucharistic spe-cies. But no matter how one experiences the presence of Jesus, these days are challenging. In many places, only limited numbers con-tinue to be allowed in church, while others are only able to worship via live stream. None of the pat answers to where God dwells really fit. We need to try and answer this with new eyes and ears and heart.
A CLASSIC IMAGE When we think of today’s Gospel, the image of this meeting between the Angel Gabriel and Mary by Fra Angelico (1440–1445) likely comes to mind. In this fres-co, Gabriel and Mary are outside sitting among the columns, and Gabriel, with his big wings and hands crossed, gazes upon Mary and gestures towards her. She is well dressed in a tra-ditional blue garment, and

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pon-dered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no rela-tions with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
When King David was settled in his palace, / and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, / he said to Nathan the prophet, / “Here I am living in a house of cedar, / while the ark of God dwells in a tent!” / Nathan an-swered the king, / “Go, do whatever you have in mind, / for the LORD is with you.” / But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said: / “Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: / Should you build me a house to dwell in?’“
"'It was I who took you from the pasture / and from the care of the flock / to be commander of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, / and I have de-stroyed all your enemies before you. / And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. / I will fix a place for my people Israel; / I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place / without further disturbance. / Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, since the time I first appointed judges over my people Isra-el. / I will give you rest from all your enemies. / The LORD also reveals to you / that he will establish a house for you. And when your time comes and you rest with your ances-tors, / I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, / and I will make his kingdom firm. / I will be a father to him, / and he shall be a son to me. / Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; / your throne shall stand firm forever.'”
2 SAMUEL 7:1-5, 8B-12, 14A, 16
Brothers and sisters: To him who can strengthen you, ac-cording to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writ-ings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES CHRISTMAS COLLECTION
though her face shows shock, her folded hands model submission and humility. This work of art is so beautifully executed that we can miss some of its finer details. Similarly, because the Gospel scene is so familiar, we can forget to take in its small details. A few years ago, this author found a children’s book called “The Nativity” illustrated by Julie Vivas. Because her drawings were so fresh and charming and simple, she invited new perspective on the story.
LOOKING AGAIN Luke says that Mary “was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.” She asks, “How can this be?” These questions don’t fit with how Fra Angelico positioned Gabriel and Mary. In the Vivas illustrations, the Angel Gabriel sits down with battered wings and a balding head and has a cup of coffee with Mary as the two of them try to figure it out together. The text is the same, but the message conveyed is different. There is a different degree of comfort and familiarity to these illustrations. This “having a cup of coffee” is something we need to learn to do with the scriptures and with our lives. After this event, pregnant Mary traveled into the hill country to be with Elizabeth; an older, wiser, mentor—a mother figure. She spent three months there reflecting and preparing for the birth of her child. In this final week of Advent, take a few moments to find a Gabriel/Mary or an Elizabeth/Mary moment and read the Christmas readings again to see what you might have over-looked, and to find a new way for Christ to dwell in you.

A COVID-19 online risk assessment checklist has been developed by BellAge using data from the CDC and WHO. BellAge’s team of experts in public health, behavior change, education, and emerging technolo-gies created the system to help you make the best decisions about your health, and the health of your family, during the pandemic. There are a number of national health and social service organizations that are collaborating with BellAge to reach millions of people and alert them to the CV19 CheckUp tool.
The CV19CheckUp tool is available online to evaluate a user’s level of risk to the virus and offers recom-mendations and resources to reduce that risk. There is no cost to use this checklist. No personal identifia-ble information is collected.
It takes 5-10 minutes to complete the checklist, which can help you understand risk levels so you can make safe choices whenever possible. The checklist is available at CV19CheckUp.org.
