A prayer for our journey as a parish

"God of the journey, as we travel on alert us to the things that matter and open our eyes to every sign of your presence. Give us a sense of direction, or at least a sense of purpose, a sense of wonder, a sense that, in everything, You are walking with us step by step, gently leading us to the heart of things."

Availability of Holy Communion

We recognize that many in our community do not feel safe in attending Mass. We encourage using our livestream Mass (www.ladyofhopemaine.org). Unfortunately a livestream Mass does not enable a person to receive Communion. We invite those who are attending a Mass online or TV to come to St. Pius X Church at about 9:45 AM on Sunday mornings. Following the 9:00 AM Mass a priest will be available at the door of the church (approximately 9:45-10:00 AM) to distribute Communion. Follow social distancing in any line and wear a mask, please.

Telephone Ministry - Additional callers are invited to join our new "phone ministry." Some people cannot now safely get out or get to church and families are not able to visit. It is important to have con-tact with them. We are looking for people willing to make 4-5 calls a month to fellow parishioners, just to say hello. If you can do this, from the safety of your own home and on your own time, please contact the parish office to let us know. 797-7026 or by email [email protected]. Thank you!

Music Teacher

St Brigid School has an opening for a part-time Pre-K– Grade 7 Music teacher beginning on January 4, 2021. The position involves teaching general music Monday and Friday for a total of sixteen hours. Pre-K-Grade Seven classes meet once per week. Qualified candidates must have Maine Teacher Certification or be certification eligible. Please send, by mail or email, a cover letter, resume, and three references to William Burke, Principal, St. Brigid School, 695 Stevens Avenue, Portland, ME 04013 or by email to [email protected]

Part-Time Bookkeeper - St. John Paul II Parish (St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, Scarborough, St. Bartholomew Church, Cape Elizabeth, Holy Cross Church and School, South Portland) St. John Paul II parish seeks a part-time bookkeeper. Duties include accounts payables, payroll, cash receipts/deposits, reconciliations, preparing journal entries and maintaining Excel spread-sheets. Prior bookkeeping experience required. BS degree in Finance, Accounting or Business preferred. To apply, send a cover letter and resume, to Katie Benedict, Business Manager, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough, 04074. Interested parties can also email their materials to [email protected].

Winter Weather Cancellations - This year Our Lady of Hope Parish will be listing any weather-related cancellations on TV channel 6 and on the website - News Center Maine. You can also go by our "old way" - if Portland Schools are closed because of bad weather, our 9:00 AM Mass is cancelled to in-person attendance. If the internet is working, we do expect to livestream that 9:00 AM Mass but do not venture out to try to attend. Your safety, the ability of the City Crews to clean streets and our snow plowing people to clear our church yard make it important for you to stay home. If it is a "snow day" then the Parish Office will also be closed.

ABBA Baby Bottle Drive The Knights of Columbus is running the ABBA Baby Bottle Drive through the month of January. ABBA is a medical certified women’s pregnancy resource center in the state of Maine offering pregnancy testing, limited obstetrical ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment, consultations, and women’s health education completely free and confidential. The baby bottles will be available for pick up at St. Pius X

Church and St. Joseph Church through January. Please take one home with you, fill it up with spare change or whatever you would like to donate, then return it to the church where we will have a drop off box. PLEASE return all bottles, even if you aren’t able to make a donation. The loss of each bottle costs ABBA money that could be used to help run the resource center. Thank you for your support!

RCIA - Welcome to Erika and Ian

When an adult (or older child) wants to become a member of the Church or a person who was baptized but never received Eucharist or been Confirmed wants to take those steps in their faith journey, there is a process where members of the par-ish join these "seekers" in exploring faith, learning about the church and this parish and helping to prepare them for the sacraments. For the past couple of months our RCIA Team (Lori Arsenault, Dick Niles and Jim Masi, and Fr. Paul) have been meeting each week with two delightful young adults. On the Sunday after Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family, Erika Allen and Ian Edwards took the first public step in their journey with the Church and this parish. At the 5:00 PM liturgy that day we celebrated with them the "Rite of Acceptance" at which they declare publicly their desire to prepare for baptism, and the church declares our support for them. It is fitting that we celebrated this on the Feast of the Holy Family as by this mutual declaration, they are now part of our "family of faith.." Please keep them in your prayers as their journey contin-ues. You will be hearing more in the coming weeks.

Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle December 2020 Prayer Intentions

We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and bless-ing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School.

2. Pope Francis Prayer Intention January 2021 Intention for Evangelization: – Human Fraternity. May the Lord give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions, praying for one another, open to all. 3. We pray that our country and citizens be freed from the lies of conspiracy theories and “stolen elections” and a paralyzing distrust of “the other side” so that we can come together under a new President and Congress and actually attend to the business of caring for one another and for our planet, of healing….

Mass Intentions The Parish Office is open by phone and email and can make arrangements for Mass Intentions this way. At this point we are scheduling intentions for the livestream Masses only - these are the only Masses being celebrated in the parish at this time. If you wish to schedule an Intention for any other Mass, that intention will be put on a "wait" list until we know when our regular schedule can resume and what that schedule be. Thanks for your under-standing.

What's New - Despite this time of COVID-19 restrictions some new ministries have begun or become more active in our parish. The Parish Phone Ministry is growing. Would you like to join in by calling 4-5 fellow parishioners once a month, just to say hello? If you are, let the Parish Office know and we will set you up with a few names. With the assistance of Bill Welch and Deacon John has begun the ministry of a Holy Hour and Eucharistic Adoration each first Friday of the month 7:00 - 8:00 PM. For now at least this is available only by livestream. You are welcome to join in this time of prayer and blessing by going to our parish website (www.ladyofhopemaine.org) and clicking the livestream win-dow around 7:00 PM. The next Holy Hour will be Friday, February 05th, 2021 from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Christmas 50/50 Winner. Paul Leblond's winning ticket was drawn December 21st. And thanks to everyone who bought a ticket or sev-eral, the parish benefitted also. The "pot" split was $1300. And thanks to everyone who has been participating in our various parish fund-raisers these months. They have helped fill some of the gap with decreased regular income and also been ways to bring us together, at least in some form.

I would like to apologize for missing this important THANK YOU for the PARISH FUNDRAISERS who have worked so hard. Andy Litcher

We would like to give THANK YOU’S to the following volunteers for our recent fundraisers: Our pie makers for their donation of time and ingredients. Jean Ingalls, Candy Ingalls, Enda Flaherty, Karen Welch, Didi Holt, Mary McVeigh, Tonya Heskett, Anne Campbell, Cathy Roak, Patty Peters, Lisa Amabile, Linda McCormack, Kathy Eliscu, Linda Mattison, Laurie Grant, Adrianne Hubbard and Jan Libby. A total of 57 pies were made and sold generating $885.00 for our parish.

Thank you to the Women's Fellowship for sponsoring our festive mask project. Special thanks to Seamstresses Sharon Noyes, Carolyn Noyes and Tonya Heskett and to Karen Welch and Barbara Willey for coordinating this project. Over 460 masks were sold leading to a whopping $2,337.00 for our parish. Finally thank you to our parish-ioners and friends who supported us with their purchas-es in these efforts.

Sunday Masses at Stevens Avenue

As has been announced, our Sunday 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Masses have moved from St. Joseph Church to the Fr Hayes Center for the winter months. This will allow us to save on heating costs this year when our parish income as dropped due to the pandemic. Procedures for reserving a place at Mass remain the same. Enter by the door in the glass foyer on the Stevens Ave. side of the Fr. Hayes Center (school) building.

A New Year's Blessing

May your eyes be opened to the wonder of the daily miracles around you, and your sense of mystery be deepened. May you be aware of the light that shines in the darkness, and that the darkness can never put out. May you be blessed with companions on the journey, friends who will listen to you and encourage you with their presence. May you learn to live with what is unsolved in your heart, daring to face the questions and holding them until, one day, they find their answers. May you find the still, quiet place inside yourself where you can know and experience the peace that passes understanding. May love flow in you and through you to those who need your care. May you continue to dream dreams and to reach out into the future with a deeper understanding of God's way for you. Amen.

"By a different route"

Matthew tells us that the magi, after visiting the child Jesus, did not return to Herod and instead went back to their homes "by a different route." Various poems and reflections say that these strangers, seekers of wisdom, were changed by their encounter with this Child.

We have been asked to follow a "different route" in our lives, that we, our families, and neighbors not be put at unneces-sary risk of infection with COVID-19. That has changed our church life and our family lives. That different route will continue for months yet into 2021. What choices are available for you to make to follow a "different route"?

Our Lady of Hope Parish provides many opportunities for you to continue your faith journey and be connected with this parish during the pandemic. We can gather, carefully, in smaller numbers at Masses. We have more places available at these Masses than have been used. If you believe it is safe for you to come, we encourage you to do so. If it is not wise for you to do that, we encourage you to choose to participate in our livestream Masses, or other televised Masses, for those not able to go online. We encourage you to choose to be involved in other parts of our life as a community of faith -such as online Zoom gatherings, drive-through suppers, and other carefully- arranged in-person possibilities (for example our Advent Reconciliation Nights). You may choose to support of the parish in other ways as well including financial dona-tions, responding to the important parish survey, or joining the telephone ministry.

The magi made conscious decisions about what they would do in response to their circumstances. It is important that each of us do that too - important for our personal faith life and for the life of this community of faith. The risk is to drift into patterns we haven't thought or prayed about. May each of us make our choices carefully and consciously as we follow this "different route" in the months ahead.

Epiphany

This weekend we celebrate Epiphany, the day when we read the Gospel of the Visit of the Magi to the child Jesus. The traditional date of Epiphany is Jan 6th, the "12th day of Christmas", and it once was big part of the Christmas season, in some cultures the day when Christmas gifts were exchanged, or the last day to keep Christmas lights lit. In past years we have celebrated Epiphany Eve ("12th Night") here in the parish. Unfortunately this year we cannot gather that way. Let's hope for 2021. Unfortunately, many people today no longer celebrate Epiphany and the Christmas decorations are long gone, except in church. Perhaps you can observe a "home blessing" which is one of the Epiphany traditions? It can be simple, just a moment to ask God's blessing over your home, those who live there and those who will come in and out of your door this coming year. Next week we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, which is the "official" end of the Christmas sea-son in the church calendar.

Coming to Mass… (January 04th)

Open Masses are listed on page 2. Pre-registration is required and you must wear a mask. Please plan to arrive at 10 minutes early to allow time to be checked in.

How to register for Weekend Masses Call the Parish Office (207-797-7026) Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM before the weekend you wish to come. You must speak to a member of the Parish Staff. Reservations cannot be made by leaving a message or sending an email. You must make a reservation for each week – no “standing reservations” can be taken. You will need to give your name and contact information and the number of people in your “party.” People living together can sit together. All others are two to a pew.

Can you be part of our Ministry of Welcome?

Thanks to parishioners who are now serving as Ministers of Welcome at each of our open Masses (greeters, ushers, cleaners). Your generous service makes it possible to welcome our parishioners to live Masses. 1. Those serving need to be willing to be scheduled for a Mass on a continuing basis. We can expect that these conditions will be with us for months yet 2. Please contact the Parish Office to become part of this important Ministry Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding and good will!!

Parish Zoom Gathering Mondays For some months now a number of parishioners have gathered for a zoom conversation Monday evenings 7:00 -8:00 PM. The conversation is always interesting - no pre-set topics. Anyone in the parish is invited to join. If you want to come, send an email to the parish office letting us know that and you will be sent the weekly link and invitation. You can opt-out at any time if you wish! Thanks Fr Paul SJ Parish Planning A month ago each parish family was sent by email or regular mail a letter from the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council. Included with or attached to that letter was a survey questionnaire. Over 1200 of these were sent out. As of last week, we have received around 100 replies. We really need to hear from more of you. Practical decisions will be made about the parish based on your answers: the programs we can offer, the Mass schedule we will use after COVID-19, the way we use our buildings, etc. If you do not answer, you won't have a voice in these decisions. Once they are made it will be too late to register your opinion.

A link to the letter and survey are here if you can receive online:

(Letter) https://ladyofhopemaine.org/pdf/ParishPlanningSept2020.pdf (Letter) (Survey) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GQ5M5BF (Survey)

If you need a copy sent to you by regular mail please contact the Parish Office and that will be done. A number of mailed copies have been returned by the Post Office because the address was incorrect. If your address has changed, please let the Parish Office know that. Thanks. How Someone Who Trusts in God Acts by Vinita Hampton Wright

If I trust God, how will that affect my behavior?

That depends on what I trust God to do or be. If my expectation is that God will beat up my enemies and make sure I get what I pray for, then I am likely to act proud, vindictive, and entitled. Trusting God to be on “my side” implies that people who don’t agree with me or who don’t treat me as I think they should are on the “other” side, which is the wrong side.

However, if I trust God to love me, forgive me, heal me, guide me, and be with me through everything, then I will act like a person who can enjoy life as a gift and who does not have to fight and grab for what she wants, because she is free to be content as circumstances shift and change. If I trust God to be God and remain with me and use a variety of situations to strengthen and teach me, then I don’t need to create enemies out of people who seem opposed to me. I can relax and ac-cept any person as someone loved by God—and I can trust God to work in that person, starting with where he or she is now.

If I trust God, I will not be a fearful person; it’s as simple as that. Because perfect love casts out fear, I can discern my level of trust on any given day by assessing how much fear is playing a part in what I do, say, think, and focus on.

If I trust God, then I will be able to talk to God even on the days when I am acting proud, vindictive, entitled, and fearful. My trust can clear the way for me to fume or cry in God’s presence rather than hide from God and avoid the discussion. It’s important to remember that people can trust God but still behave badly. The trust is what enables them to recognize what’s happening and turn back to God.

I hope you have the courage soon to ask yourself what you trust God to do and who you trust God to be. How we perceive God being involved with us determines how we choose to be involved with God.

Praying

Yes, prayer does have an effect on the person who prays. But that effect is not the primary motive for praying. It is a by-product. The primary motive for prayer is love, first the love of God for us and then the arousal of our love for God." Fr. William A. Barrry, S.J.

Fr. Barry died in late December at the age of 90. He was a former Provincial of the New England Jesuits, and an important leader in the ministry of spiritual direction and retreats. In addition, though his many books he taught many of us about prayer, about God, and about the relationship of friendship that God desires with each of us.

This week

This week we honor three saints with connections to the US. January 4th is the memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 1774 - 1821. She is the first American born person to be canonized. She established the Daughters of Charity, the first congregation of religious sisters formed in the US. and began multiple schools.

Tuesday, January 5th is the memorial of St. John Neuman 1811-1860. He was born in Bohemia and came to America to be ordained. This Bishops in his homeland told him they had no need for more priests. There was certainly need here. Neuman later joined the Redemptorists. As Bishop of Philadelphia he established the first Diocesan Catholic school system.

Joining these two educators is Saint and Brother Andre Bessette. He had little education himself and for at time worked in the textile mills of New England. Later as a Brother in the Congregation of the Holy Cross in Montreal, he served as doorkeeper for many years. He was also a person of deep prayer and devotion to St. Joseph. He visited and prayed with countless sick people and his devotion to St. Joseph led to the building of the Oratory of St. Joseph in Montreal. At the time of his death in 1937 in Montreal, over one million people filed past his coffin in the church.

Journey of the Magi

The American-British (and sometime New Englander) poet T. S. Eliot has written a now famous poem about the magi. This link will take you to a you tube recording of Eliot reading his poem.

https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/journey-of-the-magi/

Journey Of The Magi by T. S. Eliot 'A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a journey: The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter.' And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory, Lying down in the melting snow. There were times we regretted The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces, And the silken girls bringing sherbet.

Then the camel men cursing and grumbling And running away, and wanting their liquor and women, And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters, And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly And the villages dirty and charging high prices: A hard time we had of it. At the end we preferred to travel all night, Sleeping in snatches, With the voices singing in our ears, saying That this was all folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley, Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation; With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness, And three trees on the low sky, And an old white horse galloped in away in the meadow. Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel, Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver, And feet kicking the empty wine-skins. But there was no information, and so we continued And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory.

All this was a long time ago, I remember, And I would do it again, but set down This set down This: were we led all that way for Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly, We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, But had thought they were different; this Birth was Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death. We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death.

Strangers at the door bringing gifts (A prayer for refugees and asylum seekers)

Do we hear the knocking at the door? Do we open the door? Are we afraid? Or are we ashamed the house is a mess? Do we welcome in the stranger? Do we recognize the gifts they bring? Do we trust their story?

Do we accept the gifts they have brought fr4om afar? Do we allow them to change us? Do we realize that only by opening the door will we recognize the true Christ, The God who is hidden in smallness, Who arrives in unexpected places, at unexpected times? Do we hear the knocking at the door? Who will open the door? Who will open the door? Fiona van Wissen

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests with compatible table mates and within days, individuals become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has become our new neighborhood. The people living here seem to understand that all of us have been new to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel more at home.
