“Happy New Year 2018”
**Feast of Holy Family**
My dear brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the Great Feast of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This Feast focuses
on the Family as the plan of God for all people. It is especially relevant today with the societal breakdown of the Family unit. But,
especially considering the secularist society’s attempt to try and redefine the family and the meaning of marriage. That God chose
to enter the world in a family teaches us clearly that this was God’s plan from the beginning of Creation. That a man and woman
should join in marriage and bring forth life.
Our secularist society has attempted to change this meaning into anything goes society. Thus, marriage is denigrated as unnecessary,
or redefined. The Feast of the Holy Family makes it clear that God intended marriage to be between a man and a woman and within
that love co-create life in their children. As disciples of Christ we must witness to this plan and proclaim it to our society. We must
work to change the laws of our nation to protect the meaning of marriage.
Originally celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany, the Feast of the Holy Family was moved to the Sunday after Christmas in 1969,
bringing it within the Christmas season.
Feast of the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God
Although this year the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God, is not a Holy Day of Obligation it is still celebrated in honor of Mary.
What better way to begin the New Year then with a celebration of our Blessed Mother under her title of “Mother of God”. As we
dream of what this new year might bring we can be assured that we have our Mother in heaven interceding for us before the throne
of her Son. Mary is the example we should follow. As we make our New Year’s resolutions let us dedicate ourselves to deepening
our relationship with her Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
As we begin this New Year and make our New Year’s Resolutions let us rejoice in the gifts and talents God has given us. It is time
for new members of the parish to use their gifts and talents and to step up and join the ranks of the vital ministries in the parish.
The new year is a good time to follow the example of Mary and say yes. Yes, to serving the Lord in his parish of our Lady of Good
Counsel. Yes, to the Lord who has called you by your baptism to service. Fr. Ray and I would be happy to discuss with you the
various ministries and services that are available. Some of the ministries are Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Mass Servers, Ushers,
Counters and Religious Education Teachers and Aides. We can also use volunteers for work around the parish to assist our facilities
manager George caring for the plant facilities.
On behalf of Fr. Ray Rodrigue, Deacon Bob Glasner, Deacon Bruce Olsen, Deacon Ron Romano,
Teresa Gagliostro and all the staff of Our Lady of Good Counsel I wish each of you a very peaceful,
joyful and
“Happy New Year”
May God bless you
