Mission Statement Our Lady of Good
Counsel Parish Lawrence ~ Methuen
Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed
to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart.
We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist.
As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship
and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellow-ship, and service. With diligence, compassion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by
the Holy Spirit.

January 12, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence Baptism of the Lord
Dear Parishioners, This week we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, and on this day can reflect on our own status through our Baptism as sons and daughters of God. The day that Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan a dramatic event took place… the heavens were torn open and the Spirit of God descended like a dove upon Jesus, “And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” And believe it or not, the same thing happened at your Baptism! There is a clear distinction between ‘the baptism that John preached’ and the Baptism that Jesus would initiate as a Sacrament of the Church. John’s baptism is one of repentance for sin. So this raises the question why Je-sus, who is without sin, would submit to a baptism that is a turning away from sin. In the book The Gospel of Mark the author, Mary Healy, provides this take on that question: “Given the exalted baptism that Jesus is go-ing to administer (v. 8), it seems surprising that he now comes in the role of a lowly penitent, to be baptized in the Jordan by John. Mark does not explain why Jesus comes to the Jordan valley from his hometown in Naza-reth of Galilee, but we can surmise that he does so because he recognizes John’s ministry as the prelude to his own (see v. 14). Why does Jesus submit to a “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (v. 4)? Not because he himself is a sinner (1:1; see 2 Cor 5:21), but because of his total solidarity with sinful humanity, a solidarity that begins now and will lead inexorably to the cross. Indeed, Jesus’ baptism is an anticipation of his passion. Immersion in water is a symbol of death (see Ps 69:2–3; 124:4–5; Jon 2:3–5), and Jesus will later speak of his death as a “baptism” (Mark 10:38). Jesus, like Moses, acts as the ideal intercessor, not standing apart from sinners but in solidarity with them under God’s judgment (Exodus 32:31–32). In so doing, he acknowledges God’s just judgment on sin, while at the same time offering to God the response of perfect re-pentance on behalf of the people.” Immediately after His baptism Jesus would go out in to the desert and be tempted by the devil. This reminds us of the power of repentance in our own lives… to consciously and intentionally turn away from sin we are made stronger in our fight against evil. In our struggle against sin we are strengthened by the Holy Spirit. The Baptism that Jesus would inaugurate brings each of us into that relationship with God that is His own… we are brought into the family of God. Healy provides a beautiful image of God’s own love for His people revealed in the sending of His Only Son so that ‘we may not perish but have eternal life.” She writes “The New Testa-ment proclaims that all of Jesus’ followers have become children of God, participating in his own relationship with the Father (see Rom 8:15–16; 1 John 5:1). Thus, these words are spoken to each of us as well: “You are my beloved son,” “You are my beloved daughter.” Only in accepting our identity as a beloved child of the Fa-ther is it possible for us too to embark courageously on the mission to which God has called us.” So if you ask the people who were at your Baptism if they remember things like the descent of the Holy Spirit
and hearing the words of God Himself they might say no… but they happened, and you are a child of the Most
High God because of it!
God bless, Fr. Chris

St. Augustine Class Reunion December 6, 2019
Approximately 36 people from the classes of 1975 through
1985 attended a night of fun. This picture is from the Class of 1979.
As quoted by Wendy “ It was pretty remarkable that we got so many together. I have to say there were no awkward moments getting reacquainted even though many of us
never even met as adults. It was like we had known each other forever. It was a very unique experience as was grow-ing up in a small tight knit community within a larger city in
the 1970’s. We attended grades 1 to 8 together and there were less than 30 kids in the grade. We were part of each
other’s LIFE moments for years. Our world was small and safe with St. Augustine’s in the middle. We all lived on
“the hill” and still remember what street people lived on and sometimes even their home phone number.
It was a really fun night!
Happy New Year 2019 ~ 2020
Highlights from the OLGC New Year’s Eve Dinner. Those who attended enjoyed a family style chicken dinner prepared by Chef “Chris” and danced the night away to the music of Al and Tom’s Hit Parade!
Epiphany Concert ~ January 5, 2020 What a way to close the Christmas Season! Lori and the entire OLGC Choir provided us with an afternoon of beautiful, peaceful music. Those who attended will agree that it is the perfect way to begin a New Year filled
with JOY and PEACE in our hearts!!

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities. Our Church leaders and pastors work tirelessly to serve our Church both within and well beyond the walls of our parishes, as is evidenced by the examples above and below.
Pine Street Inn: Fr. Frank Kelley, Fr. Bill Joy and Boston urban priests created what we know today as the Pine Street Inn. This local organization provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.
Rostro de Cristo: Fr. Jim Ronan founded this agency, which provides life-changing service opportunities for young adults to serve those on the margins in Ecuador. While continuing to shepherd Rostro, Fr. Jim Ronan also serves as pastor of St. Mary-St.Catherine of Sienna in Charlestown, where hundreds of families look to the parish food pantry for groceries.
Civic and Community Support: In Dorchester, Fr. Linh Nguyen, the pastor of St. Ambrose Parish, leads a strong and vibrant faith community while also providing civic support for his parishioners, many of whom came here from Vietnam with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.
Fire Chaplaincy: Fr. John Unni of St. Cecilia’s in Boston and Fr. Dan Mahoney, pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Charlestown, serve our community as chaplains for the Boston Fire Department.
It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities for all of us.
Please support the special Christmas collection for our priests at Christmas Masses in your parish or at clergytrust.org.
