PCCO-Parkesburg Churches
Community Outreach
Thank you all for your time and efforts. And Espe-
cially for conducting the programs that take place
at such a hectic time of year when your time is pre-
cious and scarce. Thank you to the congregations of
the churches that fund PCCO’s programs and the
individuals who, while not necessarily actual active
members, are PCCO members in spirit by taking on
the work in each church to make our programs
possible.
PCCO is a wonderful organization with compas-
sionate and caring members and it make a
difference in people’s lives.
The holidays are here and more non-perishable
foods are needed to restock the Food Cupboard.
Please place donated items in the PCCO box at each
worship site.
We are truly grateful and appreciate all of the dona-
tions of food items we receive throughout the year.
Thank you!
It might be easy to run away to a monastery, away
from the commercialization, the hectic hustle, the
demanding family responsibilities of Christmas-
time. Then we would have a holy Christmas.
But we would forget the lesson of the Incarnation,
of the enfleshing of God—the lesson that we who
are followers of Jesus do not run from the secular;
rather we try to transform it. It is our mission to
make holy the secular aspects of Christmas just as
the early Christians baptized the Christmas tree.
And we do this by being holy people—kind,
patient, generous, loving, laughing people—no
matter how maddening is the Christmas rush…"

December 20, 2015-Fourth Sunday of Advent Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Five days out, and parishioners nearly everywhere will likely pick up the fragrance of the newly-arrived parish
Christmas evergreens today: trees, wreaths and garland. White lights may be added, according to the local cus-
tom. Poinsettia plants clog the sacristy, a “sea of red” likely ordered under the rubric of “more is better.”
The “C and E” Catholics (you know the translation) are gearing up for their semi-annual visit and their un-
wanted phone calls to learn the Mass schedule. Meanwhile, the pastor holds out expectation that the annual
collection will help defray the bills that never stop coming. All of this is typical five days out from Christmas
at “St. Typical” parish nearly everywhere across the fruited plain.
There is nothing inherently wrong with all of these happenings, if you forget about the “C and E’s.” But what
lies hidden is the gnawing awareness that this too is part of “our fast-paced society”. Lots of ink has been
used, and much discussion given over to analyzing this subject. I do suspect that the very pace most of us
follow all year contributes to the high rate of cancer among us. Our consumer culture sets the speedometer just
a little too high for enjoyment of life at a more pleasant pace. Look for Valentine hearts to show up at your
local drug emporium just after New Year’s.
That’s precisely why these final days of Advent 2015 have a timeless message for us Americans: “Slow
down!” Sacred Scripture is always interested in getting us to do that so that we will remember the things that
really matter in life.
You recall the gospel story of Martha and Mary. The two sisters who are emblematic about opposite ways to
approach life. We meet Martha the activist and Mary the contemplative. Without condemning Martha, Jesus
gives the nod of approval to Mary for choosing “the better part.” That means for us to realize that we will en-
joy this Christmas all the more if we will take some time over the next few days to observe some “Mary
moments.” That means stopping whatever it is we’re doing during these hectic days, for even just five
minutes, to ponder and pray about what Christmas means.
Micah the prophet tells us how tiny Bethlehem became the birthplace of God. Have you ever felt yourself un-
important in God’s eyes? Take heart from what happened to a nearly forgotten town. Nobody is unimportant
to God.
The author of Hebrews tells us today how much God prizes obedience. Are you aware that God admires your
decision to obey Him? And the same for the Church’s commands? He does you know.
Five days out, every one of us could rightly say we have a lot to do before Christmas. But if you’re too busy to
pray, then you really are too busy. So do calm down, and get ready for the big day the best way.
A blessed Christmas to you and yours! Father Peterson
First Reading: Micah 5:1-4a
Eight centuries before Christ, this prophet proclaims that the “new David” will not only be the Messiah, but
also that he will come from the least regarded town of Bethlehem.
Second Reading: Hebrews 10:5-10
God prefers obedience to sacrifices, as evident from His high regard for the self-offering of Jesus. That offer-
ing was a perfect fulfillment of God’s will.
Gospel: Luke 1:39-45
Luke brings the two mothers-to-be together in a literary construct meant to show them both as integral to
God’s plan and His activity in their lives. Elizabeth’s child will be the precursor of Mary’s in a holy bond
