The Traits of MFPS students – Empowered Learners and Empathetic Leaders –wasfirstintroducedtotheschoolcommunityin2018.Priortothat,theschoolwent through a year-long process to conductmultipleFocusGroupDiscussionswithstakeholders(staff, parents, School Advisory Committee members and students) to hear their hopes and aspirations for MFPSstudents.Thesetraitsrepresentourcollectivevoice as a school community, our desire for our children to be motivated and self-directed future-ready learners who are also concerned citizensanchoredinpurposeandvalues.

It is one thing to have our student outcomes beautifully crafted, it is another to ensure that the students liveuptothesetraits.Hence, toaidus incommunicating this identity to the students, Year Head (Middle Primary), Mr Leong Wai Phang, designed the superhero silhouette to depict the Empowered LearnerandEmpathetic Leaderwhohasthepowertoownhislearningaswellasabighearttocareforothers.

At the same time, to incorporate our students’ voice into the Traits, we activated all P4 to P6 studentsto design a symbolic logo of our Traits during their Art lessons in 2018.Ofall theartisticandcreativeentries,onestoodoutfromtherest.ItwasdesignedbyourViceHeadPrefect(2018),NgShiYing.

The burning torch mounted on a blue arrowrepresentsthestrongandunwaveringpassionoftheexcellence-driven learner who is always forward-looking.Theblueexudesasenseofcalmnessandstability in a VUCA world. Spot the letters ‘EL EL’cleverlywovenintothebodyofthearrow.

Ayearlaterin2019,wehadtheideaofdevelopingour superhero silhouette into mascots to further strengthenthe identityof theEmpoweredLearner

and Empathetic Leader. Mr Leong roped in ourtalented resident artist-cum-PE teacher, Mr Lee QinYi,whoisknownforhiscaricaturesofourMFPSstudents, to design the MFPS mascots. Together, they brought to fruition what we now know asMr Empowered and Ms Empathetic. The symboldesigned by Shi Ying was incorporated into themascots’costumes, onthearmbands.

Reimagining Curriculum for Primary 1 and 2

In 2017, thenMinisterof Education,MrNgCheeMeng, emphasised theneed for joyof learning inschools. The main intent is to help our students experience the joy of learning through developmentallyappropriate varied learning experiences aligned with subject specific outcomes and to makeconnections to their learning across and beyond the formal curriculum subjects. For example, anEnglish lesson on Prepositions is reinforced through gymnastics during a Physical Education lesson; aMathematics concept on Subtraction is reiterated via a song ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ during aMusiclesson.Theseareintentionallyplanned,integratedlessonsacrosssubjectstohelpstudentsfindmeaningindifferentcontexts.Manipulatives,scenario-basedroleplays,technology-basedlessonsandgamesareusedinlessondesigntoenthusestudentsinlearning.Educatorstaketheroleoffacilitators,experimentingwithnewapproachesofteachingtomotivatestudentsandpromotethinkingandself-regulatedlearningthroughquestioningandguiding.

InMayflower, webelieveintheJoy of Reading.Wewantourstudentstoreadnotbecausetheyhavetobut because theywant to.Whenour studentswant to read, they will be involved and theirparticipation becomes an integral part of their learning.DuringbothEnglishandMother Tonguelanguage periods, teachers carry out reading purposefully, implicitlyandexplicitly.

Extensive ReadingWehavering-fencedspecificperiodsforSustainedSilent Reading (SSR) during curriculum by providing an environment conducive to reading. Students

spend quiet moments reading age-appropriatebooks from a selection of books recommendedbyteachersbasedontheir readingcompetency. We also provide Book Share platforms wherestudents share summaries and highlights of bookstheyhaveread.Aftersharing, studentsaregiven opportunities to take questions from theirpeers. Post-reading activities, such as InspiREADand Choice Board activities, are not merely for decorative displays, but are excellent platforms for promotingandgeneratinginterestinreading.WealsocollaboratewithNationalLibraryBoard(NLB)for a mobile service (NLB Books2Go) where webring the community library to the school for mass borrowing.

Intensive ReadingLearning to read leads to reading to learn.Withtheabilityto read, students will be able to usethe information presented effectively in their learning.Reading then becomes purposeful andusefulbesidesjustbeinginteresting.Thepurpose to read helps students to discover learning beyond the classroom, drawingfrom their prior knowledge and experiences tohelpthemunderstandwhattheyarereadingandto make connections. Ready, Get set, Let’s Code! Mdm Carol Lee, HOD/Science

Those have been the buzzwords for our Primary3and5studentsastheyembarkedontheirALP@STEM journey in Term 1. Theprogrammeaims toequipourstudentswithbasiccomputationalskillsandatthesametimeimbuethemwith21st CCskills. At the end of the fun, exciting yet exasperating at times, learningandunlearningjourney, theprocessculminated in studentsworkingcollaboratively tosolveschoolandenvironmental-basedproblems.

The stepby step instructionsonhow tobuild their toy robots allowed students to applyspatialthinkingskillsanddemonstrateresilienceincompletingthemission.

As their robots came to live, squeals of delightand wonderment filled the air when studentswitnessedtheirtoysperformingsimpletasksattheircommand.Theywere impressedbywhatamererobot, builtoutofbasicblockscoulddo, to solveenvironmentalproblems.

Ready, Get set, Let’s Code!

P5 SAM LABSThe Primary 5 students, on the other hand, hada more challenging task ahead of them. Afterlearning how to code basic flow programmingfor3weeks,theyweresettoapplywhattheyhadlearnt in a real world context. They unleashedtheir empathetic and creative traits as they sought out solutions to solve problems that school staff or students commonly encountered. Thelearningprocesswasauthentic, funandenrichingas students went through the phases of designthinking; a typical thinking process adopted byengineers.

During the field work phase, studentsenthusiastically cornered any teacher or school staff in sight and interviewed themonproblemsthat they face in school or any improvements that couldbemadetotheschool.

Once a problem had been identified, studentsworked collaboratively with their teammembersduring the ideation stage to brainstorm for solutions. The students showedgreat teamwork, resilience and the ability to think out of the boxas theyworked through theobstacles facedandthereafterbuildingtheprototype.
