When we consider this together with seriously alarming figures on biodiversity andecosystem collapse, and a shrinkage of civic space, it is clear we need people to bringpositive and just solutions.

One truly inspiring example of people power is youth rising for urgent climate actionacross Europe, and the globe. Today’s youth are impacted people – they know their rightto a future and a decent life is in peril, and they are demanding urgent climate actionand justice from world leaders. The Friends of the Earth Europe network has been proudto support this youth-led movement and march in solidarity.

Last year Friends of the Earth Europe adopted our new five year strategy for the pursuit ofour vision and solutions for a sustainable and environmentally, socially and economicallyjust Europe. Part of this strategy is working to find new narratives. Last year, together withyouth and women’s rights organisations, trades unions and other allies, we conductedresearch on how to stimulate wider debate on the future of Europe. Our testing confirmedthe power of real-life, positive stories: people coming together to defend their rights andbuild more equal, caring communities can transcend borders and motivate others to act.

At the grassroots level, there are many examples of bravery and victories supported byour network. From the 20,000 citizens who pushed the Czech government to protect thecountry’s forests (page 15), to the German activists who saved the ancient Hambachforest from an expanding coal mine (page 8), and the Spanish groups stopping industriallivestock expansion (page 14).

Across Europe, Friends of the Earth groups advocated for just and sustainable solutions –be it by defining steps towards a fossil-free Europe, promoting the concept of sufficiency, advocating for agroecology, or setting course for sustainable trade. At the EU level wesaw big wins on cutting plastics and boosting community energy.

Such examples of effective advocacy, resistance and promoting solutions underline thenecessity of civil society in a healthy democracy. Looking ahead to a new EuropeanParliament and Commission it is imperative that our institutions and electedrepresentatives defend freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and the right toprotest, and funding and access for civil society organisations. With democracyreinforced we can get on with changing the direction of Europe and achieving social, environmental and economic justice for future generations. In solidarity!

The scale and utter urgency of thetransformation needed to limit climatechange was made plain last autumn by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Scientists found that limiting globalwarming to 1.5 degrees is still – just –possible. But we have at most 12 years leftto cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero.Meanwhile the world is currently on track fora catastrophic 3 degrees of warming, evenif countries achieve the emission reductionspledged under the Paris agreement.

Winning the battleagainst plastic pollution

Pushing the EU to agreeunprecedented cuts tosingle-use plastics

Friends of the Earth Europe and ournetwork was central to the creation andambition of new laws on plastics. From2021, EU countries will ban several single-use plastics, introduce goals to reducethem in future, and put responsibility onmanufacturers to pay for wastemanagement and the clean-up of litter.

Convincing legislators to regulate a hugelypowerful industry was far from easy. In theface of huge industry resistance, weworked hard to shift the debate in Brussels.

With the Rethink Plastic alliance, wehosted innovative talkshow-style eventswith policymakers and media, andprovided expert insight to shape the policy.

We helped shift the public debate too. Wegenerated hundreds of media hits in someof Europe’s biggest publications, andreleased new research on how plasticpackaging fails to prevent – and can insteadcause – food waste. The new laws wouldsimply not have been possible withoutwidespread public demand – which ournetwork succeeded in galvanising.

The futureof Europe

europethe future of europe

We were instrumental in bringingtogether broad civil societyorganisations to build power for acaring, more equal, greener Europe.

Our ‘Manifesto for a Sustainable Europefor its Citizens’ sets out a future forEurope based on democracy, social andenvironmental justice, human rights, equality, and solidarity. Endorsed by 200

organisations, it addressed candidatesin the European elections and wastaken-up by several political groups intheir party programmes.

The incoming Parliament, as well as thenew European Commission, will becritical in setting a direction for Europe. We will be sending a loud message foropen, tolerant, compassionate societies.

But also that Europe needs a radical changeof direction – social and environmentaljustice should be at the heart of how welive, not profits of big business.

We are official partners of the EuropeanParliament’s ‘This Time I’m Voting’campaign and will continue to engagepeople in debate about what kind ofEurope we want.

We helped connect thousands of peopleacross Europe to take action for a betterfood system. Together with nationalmembers and allies we organised protestpicnics, farm visits, workshops, streetdemos, and more, over a weekend of action. All were united by a common message:good food and good farming, now!

A month later we brought these people’svoices to Brussels and handed-over100,000 signatures supporting ourdemands outside a meeting of EUagriculture ministers.

Friends of the Earth France helped force aEuropean Court of Justice decision on whethercrops produced with new genetic engineeringtechniques should be subject to existing GMOsafety rules. The ruling? A decisive yes.

The biotech lobby had hoped to influencethe public debate with a well-funded PRcampaign and to avoid referring to thesenew techniques as ‘GM’ or ‘GMOs’. But webrought together campaign groups tocoordinate messaging and demands andframe the narrative around the ruling and

beyond. Crops made with these newtechniques are now discussed as whatthey are: genetically-modified organisms.

PEOPLE POWER

Brussels / EuA game-changing win for European community energy

We helped Europeans win new rights toproduce and own their own renewableenergy - the culmination of years ofcampaigning. This golden nugget washidden amidst an otherwise mixed, jumbo-package of new EU clean energy legislation.

Community energy projects cut carbonemissions, often have solidarity as acentral value, and help communitiescontrol and profit from their own energy. The new laws help lift major constraintshampering community energy, whichcould unleash a more decentralised energysystem for Europe. What started off as asmall fringe voice in 2013, became wellrecognised fact, and now established law.

The legislation also recognises the challenge of energy poverty and requires energy savings to target energy-poor households.

SpainBye-bye coal, hola sun!

Sweeping change came to Spain’s energyin 2018. Friends of the Earth Spain playeda major role in abolishing the so-called‘sun tax’, with their campaign ‘libera alsol’. The infamous tax on home solarpanels paralysed new investment inrenewables. But strong civil societyopposition and a new governmentushered in a new law overturning the taxand supporting citizen and communityrenewable energy. Large-scalemobilisations in 20 Spanish cities alsohelped push the Spain to shut half itsoperating coal power plants by 2020.

GermanyTotemic coal struggledefends forest and climate

A totemic campaign by Friends of theEarth Germany and partners mobilisedone of the country’s largest ever climatedemonstrations to help save an ancientRhineland forest from an expanding coalmine. Hambach Forest became theepicentre of the country’s struggle tophase out coal, raising mass publicsupport. There was also success in thecourts: just in time to prevent treeclearance, a district court decided that thepower company RWE cannot cut downthe forest for a year.

Soon after, the strength of the climatemovement helped environmental NGOsnegotiate an end to coal with tradeunions, business and the government.

Using our unique checklist tool, we carriedout a ‘sustainability check’ on the EU-Indonesia trade deal: it failed.Subsequently we increased pressure onnegotiators and brought togetherorganisations from Indonesia and Europeto get palm oil excluded from the talks. As part of our work to bring solutions, we published a vision for an alternativetrade system which could have a positiveimpact on climate justice and

environmental protection. This vision waspresented at key political conferences, and we continue to advocate for it.

Youth rising

Our joint project with Young Friends of theEarth Africa on strengthening solidaritybetween our two regions has come to anend, but it’s just the beginning for thefuture of youth in Friends of the Earth.

Together, we presented a motion callingfor a stronger voice and representation of youth within the Friends of the EarthInternational federation, which waspassed unanimously. Exciting and hard-working years are ahead of us!

Raising youth voices in our network

Our School of Sustainability project wasrecognised by the Global EducationNetwork Europe as one of the 20 mostoutstanding projects for inclusion. Ourwork was recognised for creating strongeranalysis of development issues andenvironmental justice and because it“empowered a range of target groups toengage in public mobilisation on a local, national, and international level”. Whilethe project is officially over, popularedcuation approaches continue to flourishthroughout the network.

Prize-winning initiative on popular education

Young Friends of the Earth Europecontinued to grow, welcoming newgroups in Macedonia and Latvia to itsuniquely strong and autonomous networkof youth volunteer activists.

This growth depends on creatingempowering spaces for young peoplefrom all backgrounds.

Last year, an ‘intersectionality in practice’training in Norway led to 10 membergroups running their own workshops onintersectionality.

The workshops dealt with diverse topicsincluding gender justice, inequalities ineducation systems, LGBTQI+ issues andclimate justice, and directly trained 147people across Europe.

This approach was also a focus of the2018 summer camp in Cyprus, whichbrought together 54 young people fromEurope and Africa, and led to acollectively-produced toolkit forintersectional movement building.

Belgium (Wallonia)
