SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“Speak Lord, for Your servant is listening” (See 1 Samuel 3, 3b-10, 19). We are all very prompt to speak. Yet, the sterling quality of the servant of God is that of listening. The great Shema Prayer of Israel starts with the injunction: “Listen O Israel.” and all the prophets encouraged the
people to listen to the word of God. The disciples that followed Jesus when He told them “come, and you will see” (See Saint John 1:35-42) listened to Him for the whole day, and we have the sterling example of Mary who listened intently to what God said to her and replied that she was the maid servant of the Lord. Because he listened to the Lord, Samuel’s life changed. He became a great prophet. Because she listened to the Lord, Mary’s life changed. She became the Mother of God, and also our Mother. If you listen to God, your life will also change. As Andrew the brother of Simon Peter did, you will be able to go and tell others: “We have found the Messiah!” and if they listen to you their lives will also change.

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS FROM A SERMON BY SAINT GREGORY NAZIANZEN
“The Baptism of the Lord”
Christ is bathed in light; let us also be bathed in light.
Christ is Baptized; let us also go down with Him, and
rise with Him.
John is Baptizing when Jesus draws near. Perhaps he
comes to sanctify His baptiser; certainly He comes to
bury sinful humanity in the waters. He comes to
sanctify the Jordan for our sake and in readiness for
us; He Who is spirit and flesh comes to begin a new
creation through the Spirit and water.
The Baptist protests; Jesus insists. Then John says: I
ought to be Baptized by You. He is the lamp in the
presence of the sun, the voice in the presence of the
Word, the friend in the presence of the Bridegroom,
the greatest of all born of woman in the presence of the firstborn of all creation, the one who leapt
in his mother’s womb in the presence of Him Who was adored in the womb, the forerunner and
future forerunner in the presence of Him Who has already come and is to come again. I ought to be
Baptized by You: we should also add, “and for You”, for John is to be Baptized in blood, washed
clean like Peter, not only by the washing of his feet.
Jesus rises from the waters; the world rises with Him. The heavens like Paradise with its flaming
sword, closed by Adam for himself and his descendants, are rent open. The Spirit comes to Him as
to an equal, bearing witness to His Godhead. A voice bears witness to Him from Heaven, His place
of origin. The Spirit descends in bodily form like the dove that so long ago announced the ending
of the flood and so gives honour to the body that is One with God.
Today let us do honour to Christ’s Baptism and celebrate this feast in holiness. Be cleansed entirely
and continue to be cleansed. Nothing gives such pleasure to God as the conversion and salvation
of men, for whom His every word and every revelation exist. He wants you to become a living
force for all mankind, lights shining in the world. You are to be radiant lights as you stand beside
Christ, the great Light, bathed in the glory of Him Who is the Light of Heaven. You are to enjoy
more and more the pure and dazzling light of the Trinity, as now you have received – though not in
its fullness – a ray of its splendour, proceeding from the one God, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to
Whom be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.
22 January 1973 – US Supreme Court Issues a License to Kill Unborn Children
22 January 2021 – A Day to Pray and Work to Revoke that License
The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, reflect with heartbreaking magnitude, what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, #373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be
observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.”
As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Call your local diocese or parish to find out what events might be taking place in your area.
GIRM 373:
Masses for Various Needs and Occasions are used in certain situations either as occasion arises or at fixed times.
Days or periods of prayer for the fruits of the earth, prayer for human rights and equality, prayer for world justice and peace, and penitential observances outside Lent are to be observed in the Dioceses of the United States of America at times to be designated by the Diocesan Bishop.
In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. The liturgical celebrations for this day may be the "Mass for Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life” (no. 48/1 of the Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions), celebrated with white vestments, or the Mass “For the Preservation of Peace and Justice” (no. 30 of the Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions), celebrated with violet vestments.”

Please see the following page for opportunities to pray and work to revoke the license to kill your brothers and sisters!
FAITH AND BEING HUMAN – “REVOKE THE LICENSE TO KILL”
A MESSAGE FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD: “CHANGE YOUR EVIL WAYS AND
LET THE CHILDREN LIVE” Over two thousand years have passed since King Herod "ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years and under" (Saint Matthew II:16), and yet the intentional killing of innocent human life continues at a Planned Parenthood extermination and extraction facility near you. If no one in their right mind could ever defend or endorse King Herod's order to kill, how could anyone in their right mind defend or endorse the intentional killing of 300,000 boys and girls that takes place at Planned Parenthood facilities in the United States every year? Yet that is what too many people do!
Please, for the sake of the innocents, contact your elected officials and ask them to stop using your tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood’s massacre of the innocents!
And while you are at it, please go and search diligently for that facility in the list below and when you have found it, call/write/visit and ask them (with help from Carlos Santana) to "change their evil ways".

A Prayer Before Making a Confession
O Lord Jesus Christ, Judge of the living and the dead,
Before whom I must appear one day to give an account of what I have done in the body,
whether good or evil; enlighten me so that I may see where I have offended Thee, and by the Holy Spirit,
may I be moved with humility and contrition to confess my sins with a firm purpose of amendment.
Amen.
Confession Schedule at Our Holy Redeemer
Wednesday – 6:30 P.M.
Friday – 4:00 P.M.
Saturday – 1:30 P.M.
By Appointment: (516) 378 – 0665
Act of Contrition
O my God. I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. And I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven
and the pains of hell, but most of all because I have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance,
to amend my life, and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Amen.

A Year with Our Blessed Mother
Through the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mother MOST PURE,
pray for US
Excerpt from: The Mother of Our Savior by Father Reginald Garrigou-LaGrange, O..P.
St. Thomas and the Immaculate Conception
In the first—that of 1253-1254, the beginning of his theological career—he supports the privilege, probably because of the liturgical tradition which favoured it, as well as because of his pious admiration for the perfect holiness of the Mother of God. It is in this period that he wrote: ‘Purity is increased by withdrawing from its opposite: hence there can be a creature than whom no more pure is possible in
creation, if it be free from all contagion of sin: and such was the purity of the Blessed Virgin who was immune from original and actual sin.’ … In the final period of his career, when writing the Exposito super salutation angelica—which is certainly authentic—in 1272 or 1273, Saint Thomas expressed himself thus: ‘For she (the Blessed Virgin) was most pure in the matter of fault and incurred neither original nor mental nor venial sin.’
BOOK
of the Week
The Imitation
of Christ
The spiritual classic by
Thomas á Kempis, is the second
most widely read spiritual book
after the Bible… his four-part
treatise shrugs off the allure of the
material world, blending beauty
and bluntness in a supremely
spiritual call-to-arms.
This beautiful translation by
Ronald Knox and Michael Oakley
is considered by many teachers,
writers, and readers to be the best
English translation ever…

FAITH AND EDUCATION
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
The administration of Mid Term exams, is usually a clear indicator that the school year has reached the half way point and the second semester is about to begin. Teachers this year have become very creative with mid-term assignments and projects substituting for traditional exams. Students are enthusiastically preparing assignments in each subject area, hoping for positive results, as they conclude the first semester of the academic year. There is a real sense of determination and pride as
the young men look to successfully finish the first semester on a high note in spite of the obstacles and challenges they had to face due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
The eighth-grade students are also eagerly waiting for the results of the High School entrance exams. The exam to determine placement in a Catholic High School was written in November and the results and acceptance letters were being mailed or emailed by the end of last week. They should have their results this weekend. Please keep our eighth-grade students in your prayers as they discern what the next step in their educational journey will be.
While we are busy helping our Class of 2021 prepare for their next academic step. We also begin the process of recruiting for the Class of 2025. This class will start fifth-grade in September and when they graduate in June of 2025 they will represent our twentieth graduating class. Once again we would like to give the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer the first opportunity to apply. Applications for admission to our fifth-grade in September are available by contacting Mr. Gault at the school by phone (516) 379-8660, via e-mail, [email protected] or by stopping by the office between 7:30 A.M. and 3:45 P.M. on any school day (our entrance is by the flag pole in the parking lot). Our upper grades are full; however, we do anticipate some openings in the sixth-grade class. We usually have waiting lists for seats in our fifth-grade, therefore those interested in applying for membership in our Class of 2025 are encouraged to do so very quickly. The De La Salle School is for young men whose families would like the option of a Catholic school education but cannot afford the choice. If you know of a young man entering fifth or sixth-grade who is interested and would qualify for our school, please have them contact us for an application. We have come a long way since our humble beginnings back in 2002, yet there is still much more that is needed to continue the mission of providing a quality human and Christian education for young men from economically challenged families here on Long Island.

HUMBLING ONESELF
WHAT ARE YOU
LOOKING FOR?
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following Him and said to them, "What are
you looking for?" They said to Him, "Rabbi", which translated means
Teacher, "where are You staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. … Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed
Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah", which is
translated Christ. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas",
which is translated Peter. Saint John I: 35-42
