OUR VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF ARE OUR HEROES2020 has turned out to be the most challenging time, on a global level, that most of us have ever experienced. Challenging times require lots of creativity and flexibility. There are always silver linings during times like these. In the COVID-era we are taking time to notice the heroic things that ordinary people do every day. We are actively thankful for those on the front lines that are making sure that we have medical care, groceries, utilities, and other necessities. Those of us at Lubbock Meals on Wheels salute all of the heroes across our community. We have quite a few heroes hanging out at LMOW. Our staff continue to tend to all of the daily activities that it requires to take care of our clients. Our volunteers, that are able, are showing up to make sure that all 65 routes are delivered daily. We have people directing traffic in our drive-through, extra people making sure our coolers are prepped and ready to go out the door, and our trusty office volunteers who check on clients daily and help fill in the gaps. Those volunteers that are not able to continue at the moment are keeping themselves safe and healthy so they can come back when things are calmer. We are grateful that we get to see the absolute best in so many people on a daily basis.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels April 20202

As I type this article, Lubbock remains on a “stay at home” order per city officials. In my 22 years at Lubbock Meals on Wheels, I have seen many events impact our nation but none quite like this. It seems the news changes daily which means our plans, both personal and at work, change daily. It has given all of us a unique perspective as to what it is like to be homebound which is something our clients have known for quite some time. Not being able to go all the places we want to go, not having contact with others, and fearing that our needs will not be met, are all issues our clients live with all the time, not just temporarily. As an “essential” business, Lubbock Meals on Wheels has been allowed to continue to serve our clients. However, the daily operations have changed dramatically in order to keep our clients, our volunteers, our staff, and our community safe. It has always been our policy that volunteers are not to deliver if they are ill or contagious. We have always followed strict sanitation and cleaning guidelines since we are a food service establishment and, of course, now more than ever we are focused on these issues. Thank you to our dedicated

staff who are innovating, adapting, and working tirelessly to carry out our mission. Beginning March 23rd, we closed our volunteer center and began using our drive-through to limit everyone’s exposure. We are fortunate that when we recently expanded and renovated our facility we included the drive-through feature. We had no way of knowing when we would need to use it – we never imagined that it would be due to a global pandemic. It is an essential function that has allowed us to continue to operate. The other critical piece of our operation is volunteers. We knew we would be facing a shortage as some of our regular volunteers needed a break due to their own health concerns, their work status changes, or self-quarantines due to recent travel. We also knew we needed to add two additional delivery routes to handle the increasing client load and more volunteers would be needed to deliver those routes. On March 17, we put out a plea to the community letting Lubbock know that we had a need for volunteers. Within two weeks we received 193 volunteer applications! After quickly processing

all the applications and training all the people, we were able to fill all of the open routes and add the two new routes. We now offer trainings through video conferencing to eliminate the need for an in-person gathering. The response from our community has been incredible, not only by stepping up to volunteer, but also by providing supplies and funds. When our pet food order was cancelled you all responded quickly and generously. Our food supplier has donated fresh produce, local companies have provided bottled water and sanitizers, and many others have donated much need funds. None of us know just how much or for how long our economy will be impacted. As an organization that relies completely on donations, we are concerned but hopeful. Lubbock is a great community that has always taken care of its neighbors, and we hope that the generous support we have seen so far will continue. Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to carry out our mission, especially during this difficult time. We will get through this as our community always does…together.

It’s our volunteers that keep the wheels turning around here!

National Volunteer Week is April 19th – 25th this year. We want all of our volunteers to know how much we truly appreciate all that they do.LMOW has fifteen staff members, only nine of whom are full time. We rely on volunteers to deliver all of our meals. The Cambridge Dictionary definition of ‘volunteer’ is – “vol*un*teer: a person who does something, esp. for other people or for an organization, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it.” According to our recipients a volunteer is so much more! Each week day, more than 70 volunteers come to LMOW to deliver meals to our recipients, help in the kitchen, assist in the office, and help us get coolers out. On average, it takes about one hour to deliver a route. It only takes a lunch-hour to make someone feel special and ensure that they are well fed. Our volunteer may be the only person they see that day. What better way to spend your lunchtime? Our volunteers range in age from 2 years to 94 years. (We love that our volunteers bring their children, grandchildren, and yes, great grandchildren to help deliver)

172 of our volunteers are 18 or under. 66% of our volunteers are 60 or under. We have 88 volunteers that are 80 years of age or older. The volunteer with the most longevity started with LMOW on April 1, 1971, the date of our very first delivery, and continues to volunteer to this day. In 2019, our dedicated volunteers logged in over 29,600 hours, an average of 113 volunteer hours per day! They drove over 277,000 miles in 2019. That is 1,065 miles each day. Last year our volunteers drove enough miles to travel the circumference of the earth 11 times!

In addition to this, they do so much more!

They not only donate their time, they donate their fuel. They spend a few minutes (or more) with those who wish to visit. They tell us about anyone who does not answer so we can follow-up to make sure they are alright. They give us information about both good and not so good things happening with our recipients so that we can celebrate with them or try to help them. They deliver a birthday cake and a card on our recipients’ birthdays (sometimes they even sing). They deliver weekend meals, holiday meals, emergency meals, and fresh flowers on Fridays. They brave all kinds of weather throughout the year. They help package meals for delivery. They assist around the office and with special events. They package pet food for our Pet Program and deliver over 2,300 pounds of pet food every month. During the holidays, they deliver extra gifts and food boxes. They make our recipients smile, and they make us smile. This is truly an awesome, caring, dedicated, special group. They are family.Whether you can help by donating or volunteering, we can always use your support. You can deliver as often or as little as you are able – it just takes an hour, and we are sure it will be the best 60-minutes of your day! Check us out at lubbockmealsonwheels.org or call us at 809-792-7971.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Mardi Gras, 2020 was lots of fun, as always. This year

we raised over $108,600 with over 1,300 people in attendance. There was plenty of food with thirty-five restaurants featuring their fare, entertainment by Bo Garza, table-side entertainers, a large silent auction, Character Selfies Photo Booth, and the always fun activity area. The Mardi Gras King and Queen (Nick Kraynok and Sasha Wilson) provided entertainment, judged booths, and got people up and dancing! SAVE THE DATE NOW for next year’s Mardi Gras to be held on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2021. All of our appreciation to the following-you made this event wonderful.

Thanks to all who made Mardi Gras 2020 a success!

Holiday Extravaganza

2020This year, Community Christian Church’s annual

Holiday Extravaganza will be on November 6th

& 7th. The elves have not been able to receive

donations or build baskets since they have been

social distancing since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Once they are allowed to leave the North Pole,

they will have lots to catch up on. Once the stay

at home order is lifted, they plan to work on both

Tuesdays and Thursdays. In order to catch-up, they

will need extra helping hands. Here are some ways

that you can help.

Donate the following items.

Baskets

Wire edged ribbon

Mason jars (with lids preferably)

Styrofoam – pieces large enough for

floral centerpieces, arrangements, etc.

New & very gently used items

for themed gift baskets

Once the stay at home order is lifted, donations

can be taken to Community Christian Church at

3416 96th Street or to Lubbock Meals on Wheels

at 2304 34th Street. At that time the group will be

looking for volunteers to help prepare for the sale.

You do not need to be crafty.

For more information call Dena at either

806-789-5682 or 806-795-3190.

CORRECTION

HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA, 2019 TOTAL

We accidentally under-reported the Community

Christian Church’s 2019 Holiday Extravaganza

total in our January newsletter. In 2019,

Community Christian Church donated $20,000

to Lubbock Meals on Wheels from the proceeds

of their Holiday Extravaganza! Since 2011, this

community church has donated $98,424 to help

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ clients remain at home,

well fed, and independent.

We apologize for the inaccurate reporting.

THOUGHTS ON QUARANTINE By Sam Bowe, former LMOW Program CoordinatorMillions of people around the world have had to adjust to life living inside the walls of their homes. Some of us are fortunate enough to share it with people we love while others are forced to live in isolation. In other cases, people may live with family members but choose to self-quarantine for the safety of those around them. Living arrangements look different for everyone. Some have million-dollar homes while others live in government housing. For most people around the world we are all stuck inside. Regardless of what our lives looked like before, we are all now experiencing the same reality as someone who is homebound either because of their age or due to a disability. A few short months ago, we would all leave our homes to go to work, school, or out for a drink with friends. We simply jumped in our car and drove wherever we felt like going. A traditionally homebound person did not have this luxury. Their basic needs revolved around someone, hopefully a family member, picking them up and taking them either to the doctor, grocery store, or maybe to a restaurant for a bite to eat. For this person, leaving the house without assistance was unsafe, maybe even impossible. Additionally, many people who are homebound live mostly in isolation. In our quarantined lifestyle, we are seeing some similarities. It is unsafe, and frightening, to go out even for necessities like groceries or getting a meal from a drive-thru. We find ourselves with many hours to fill and only the confines of our homes to entertain us. Many of us have taken to binge watching shows or finding a new hobby or skill. Others, who are fortunate enough, have been able to pass the time with family activities. However, most homebound people only have themselves and maybe a pet. From the time it became unsafe for them to leave their homes, until now and beyond, a homebound person has experienced this void of the outside world that we are all now experiencing. Whether or not we can see the end in sight, there will be a time when we can emerge from our homes and restart the normal lives we lead before COVID-19. Sadly, the homebound will continue to not be able to leave their homes safely. When we find normalcy again, please remember your time in quarantine and let that be encouragement to spend time with someone who is homebound.

We would like to welcome the two newest members of our staff. Kris Antu is our new program coordinator. Kris is responsible for taking referrals, creating routes, and managing all of the extras like the pet program and weekend meal program. Katie Craig is our new general worker. Katie is responsible for making sure our coolers are clean and sanitary, keeping our vans clean and full of fuel, and keeping us organized in many areas of the building. We are so glad to have these two with us!

welcome!

Helping Humans and Their Pets Stay Together!

We thank everyone for the overwhelming response to our request for pet food. In the beginning of the COVID-19 hoarding situation, we were unable to purchase large quantities of pet food. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we now have enough to last at least two more months!

• Greyhounds are the world’s fastest dogs with the ability to reach up to 45 mph.

• Cats have 4 rows of whiskers.• Nine percent of dog owners will have a

birthday party for their pet.• Cats spend approximately 30% of their

waking hours grooming themselves.

“Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life.”

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Because of COVID-19, we do not have a date for this special delivery this year. We look forward to being able to schedule this fun day. We appreciate the support we receive from LPD each year and we salute their heroism during these trying times.

Every day, but especially during Police Week, please be sure to show your appreciation to LPD and all local Peace Officers. They put their lives on the line for us and provide support in more ways than most of us realize. We hope that, when things slow down, we will be able to have LPD deliver this year.

Special Delivery…LPD Day!

In the past year, we have lost several of our

precious volunteers. May special memories

comfort all of their families and friends, and

may their loved ones find peace very soon.

LMOW QUICHE IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO ADD VARIETY TO YOUR HOME-COOKED MEALS.During these days of stay at home orders and social isolation, you are probably looking for ways to add variety to your home-cooked meals. Our house made quiche is an excellent way to mix it up, have an easy to prepare meal, and support a local non-profit. Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm you can come by our office and pick up quiche that will work for any meal. It goes straight from the freezer to the oven. We have seven varieties to choose from Green Chili Chicken, Ham & Cheese, Italian Sausage, Spinach & Bacon, and Mexicana (vegetarian)…and our two new varieties, Jalapeno Cheeseburger and Philly Cheese Steak with Mushrooms. Quiches are $15.50 + tax for one/two for $30.00 + tax. With your “frequent quiche card” you buy 10 and get one free!

WE’RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!Although we have over 1,600 volunteers and over 50 corporate and group volunteers on the books, we always need more! Thanks to the generosity of the Lubbock community, we have gotten a couple of hundred new volunteers so far this year. Some of these new people may only be available until they can go back to work. Throughout the year, others become ill, go on vacation, and have other interruptions that keep them from being able to volunteer. As we transition into the summer months, our volunteers’ schedules often change. While some people can only deliver in the summer months, others are away during this time of year. Summer is a great time to get your children, grand-children, and ‘great-grands’ involved with LMOW. As much as we love having new faces around here, our recipients love it even more! You don’t have to commit to a weekly route. You can deliver as often or as little as you are able. Check us out at lubbockmealsonwheels.org. For the time being, we are operating a drive-through for cooler pick-up and drop-off to reduce everyone’s exposure.
