  • 4True Techniques to Finish it Right - Every Time

s with all mixed media comes a necessity to know a variety of techniques

to create one-of-a-kind pieces that expressly showcase your style and taste.

As well, know your tools. It is my hope that this chapter gives you a heads up so that

your efforts are most enjoyable and go smoothly for you. Preparation and planning

are the smartest ways to begin any project.

Start right: Set up your work area with the right tools, prep your mind and plan the

    project as you move forward.

After you choose the project you want to do, always read through the directions

    before beginning your project.

Lay out the specific items you will use for that project and put the other items

away or at least out of arms reach.

    It's good to practice the

    "measure twice, cut once"

    theory when beginning any

    project, so think through

    your project before

    you begin.

A brief message from: The American RedundancyDepartment of Redundancy in America.Preparation and planning are the smartestways to begin and end a successful project sothat it is successful and saves you time andmoney. If you don't plan the work and workthe plan, it may cost you extra time and extramoney. Read through the project before beginning. Thank you for your time and with much gratitude for the moments we took,

    we thank you.

  • 7F or over 19 years, I have made jewelry and sold it at major

    markets such as the Dallas

Apparel and Gift Markets, the Atlanta Marts

and many other wholesale markets. As

stated in my bio, I have done some major pro

duction for some major retailers. My creation

    s

have to look great to measure up to the retaile

rs' expected standards. My choice after 19 yea

    rs

of jewelry design and production is Envirotex

. I have experimented with many other resin

    glazes on

the market. Many are fine for crafting, but du

e to the quality of finish, cannot be resold in h

    igh-end

shops and boutiques. Envirotex dries to a ve

ry hard clear glaze. I have samples over 4 yea

    rs old at

this point and they are clear and hard - no ye

llowing, no chipping, no pealing, no cloudines

    s or

blurring. It's simple to use and with the little

extra techniques I'm sharing with you, you w

    ill find it

easy to finish your creations perfectly for a lon

g life. To Keep it Simple Sugar:

    1. Pour Envirotex in a 1 to 1 ratio into a smal

    l cup.

    2. Mix with a stir stick of some kind for abou

    t 2 minutes.

    3. Pour a thin layer onto your finished work.

    4. Move it around gently to cover all surface

    area.

    5. Blow out the air bubbles with a heat source

    ..

    6. Let this dry for 24 hours in a warm, dry p

    lace.

That's it in a nutshell BUT since I've been doin

g this a while I've had a barrage of question

    s over the years. This

will be helpful to you as you will no doubt ha

ve questions upon your first use of the excelle

    nt Envirotex glaze.

Envirotex glaze comes in 2 bottles. Simply poura 1 to 1 ratio in a small cup. I like to use the little measuring cups found on top of coughsyrups and indigestion bottles which I call ameasuring cup.

One teaspoon of each combined and well mixed willglaze one to three pieces depending on the projectsyou've chosen. Pour the hardener first. "Why" youask? You inquisitive crafter! I've found that the oozefactor can often lead to a little more than you bargained for as you pour. It is always best to err infavor of the resin. It will always get hard as long asthere is an equal amount to even a hair more of theresin in your mix. Stir with a coffee stir stick forabout two minutes. There will be bubbles.

    1 2

  • 8Photo Prep and PaperI have found that if I use glossy or photo paper, I do not need toseal my images. Porous paper (un-glossy, typing or newspaper)can cause your images to "bleed" since the glaze fills in the poursand causes ink to seep. It is best to test your paper if not usingone of the recommended. To bypass the testing process, you cansimply seal all images before glazing. An easy fix is to seal yourimages with a simple sealer like white Elmer's Glue. There aremany sealers out there but this is easily available. Just apply athin coat with your finger or a small paintbrush. Make it smoothand clean with no lines. Let it dry!

Make sure your photo, paper or transfer ison smoothly with no air bubbles underneathbefore garnishing with glaze. The papers Iuse in the projects are formulated for resinglazes. Pour your Envirotex glaze.

Use a small, inexpensive paintbrush to gentlypush the glaze over the surface of your cre-ation. Use a toothpick to move glaze into verysmall crevices if needed. Do not let the toothpick touch your image as this can potentiallyscratch off part of your image. Do not put theglaze on top of crystals or crystal chain as itwill dull the crystal and take out the "fire".This is true of any glaze or resin you may use. Once you have covered the surface area andcrevices of your creation, make sure it is sitting on a flat surface for the dry time.Twenty-four hours is the best dry time.

    3 4

  • 9The blowtorch is the extreme crafter's pet. Holdyour torch at least 8 inches from the resin surfaceand shoot it for less than a second at the bubbles. You will see the bubbles disappear. Also make sureyou don't have anything highly flammable aroundyour piece when using the blowtorch as externalcombustion fashion is not in style this year.Let your creation dry for twenty-four hours beforewearing it. One final note I want to add is the lessthe humidity, the better. Create a clean, dry heatenvironment - think Sonoran Desert minus thedust and sunlight. Also it is very important NOTto put this in the sunlight as UV rays will mess upthe clear glaze quality we want. If you want to gothe extra mile, a second thin coat using the sameprocess makes it stellar.

    Resin Notes of Interest:

    QQuaanntiity: Envirotex is mixed

in a 1 to 1 ratio. Most of the

pieces in the book will take

less than 1/2 teaspoon of ea

    ch

    when mixed together. Good

    glaze technique adds the fini

shing touch to make your cr

eation look first class for a fi

    ne

    finished phenomenal fashio

nable festoon. It is the final

step in the completion of you

    r piece.

    TTooxxiicciity: A large concern ab

    out resins is toxicity. MOST

    ALL resins are derivatives of

    petroleum

products. Resin is in fact a t

ype of plastic - like polyeste

r but harder. Any plastics (wh

    ich are all derived from

    petroleum) may be worn, sa

t upon, or even used in hom

e dcor. But if you attempt

to eat, drink or digest, it is t

    oxic.

All petrol items in their liqui

d form do have some toxicit

y if they come in contact wit

h the human body - even gas

    oline.

    There's a company claiming

    that their petroleum base r

esin is not toxic. I am so so

rry for their customers who b

    uy their

product as it IS toxic in liqu

id form and proper care shou

ld be taken. But if you are m

y protg', I want you to kno

    w.

I want you to live a long and

healthy life so you can keep

    on creating and exchanging

ideas with me to beautify th

    is

    planet. So common sense s

ays as long as you don't allow

any resin liquid to come in c

ontact with your body, it wil

    l not

hurt you. It is best to use lat

ex or nitrile gloves which ca

n be found at retailers like l

    arge discount clubs.

OONN ALL RESSIINNSS available in t

    he marketplace you need to

    know:

    1. Petroleum based product

s are not digestible and chem

ically toxic to the human bo

dy especially when they are w

    et.

    Once dry, Envirotex resin gl

aze poses no harm to the hum

an body. Think of it like yo

    u do many household cleane

    rs

that can damage your skin a

fter over use without the pro

    tection of gloves.

    2. Light protection such as g

loves should be worn to keep

ALL RESIN glazes in the m

    arketplace off skin.

    3. No resin glaze is food saf

    e so that shouldn't be a prob

lem here as we are intereste

    d in fashion.

56Air bubbles can form during the first few minutesof dry time. These bubbles make your creationlook flawed if they don't rise up out of the glaze. There are several things you can do to coax thebubbles out of the surface and accelerate the dry-

ing time or curing time.a. You can use a small straw to gently blow the bubbles out. As you may remember from science, when things warm up, they expand and rise. Thisis true of the air trapped in your glaze. b. You can simply use a hair dryer. On high heat, blow hot air at the surface of your creation untilthe bubbles are gone. Check it about every fiveminutes for the next 15 minutes or so. If you seeany more bubbles, shoot it with the hair dryer. c. You can purchase a hot air nail dryer ($20-$60) from a local beauty supply store to put yourpiece in for a few hours. The hot air will cause anyair trapped beneath the surface of the glaze to riseto the top and accelerate the curing time.

yours truly is concerned that there is not enough crystal chain on

    this spinning orb

to complete the necessary beautification for our

baubles. In fact, any chain is in big demand right

now. You will be able to find enough and in

    several colors at www.hhhenterprises.com.

My favorite is Swarovski crystal aurora borealis.

How do you apply it? It's crystal clear.

Measure the length you will need beforeapplying adhesive. Gently hold the chainbetween your thumb and forefinger. Placethe end of the chain in the interior corneror hard edge of your base.Using both hands, carefully run the chainaround the inner edge of your pendant. Once you have worked it into all cornersand curves as closely as possible and allthe way around the interior edge of yourpendant, clip the chain off at the endwhere it has met up with the beginning.Once cut, set it aside.

1 2Using a toothpick and E6000, apply theadhesive around the interior corner or hardedge of your base. Go all the way aroundthe inner edge of your pendant with theadhesive.

  • 11

Note : If using crystal chain, I push

the crystals together as I meas

    ure and then

later apply the chain. This en

    riches your

creation and makes it look mo

    re expensive

    because there are actually mor

    e crystals.

But if you want to cut corners

    and save

some dimes, you can extend th

    e

    crystal chain. Your creation wi

    ll still look

very good. I'm all about the sp

    arkle though

and quite frankly, you are goin

    g to extra

    effort to create something spe

    cial. Your

time is very valuable, more va

    luable than

the dimes you'll save by not ap

    plying the

    extra sparkle. Which ever you

    do choose,

make sure you measure it first

    and then

apply it in the same way.

Now pick up that chain and have a ball.Using both hands, carefully press thechain around the inner edge and intoyour adhesive. When you get to theend, simply ease the ends together.

Important: Make sure that younever, ever cover crystals with any glue, adhesives, glaze or resin. Anything on top ofthe crystal takes the "fire" out that we so desperately covet. In about 15 minutes,E6000 becomes stringy and may have perhapsoozed on top of your crystal. If that happens, now is the time to clean it off. With a smallpair of tweezers, gently pull the E6000 awayfrom the crystal surface.

Press Release from The AmericanRedundancy Department ofRedundancy in America"Specifically measure a couple of timeshow much you will need so that youwon't cut off the chain at an incorrectlength and have to trash the wronglength and recalculate again anyway so measure twice and cut once because haste makes waste."

    Foil tape is a supe

r nova way to get a lustrous

    sterling silver, inlaid, bezel, ha

    nd hewn look on

    your pieces without:

    a. the cost of solder, iron, sterl

    ing, workshop fees and variou

    s

    tools

    b. the extra labor and perspira

    tion

    c. the potential peril to your p

    hysical body by burn from

    a soldering iron.

It is cost saving and time savin

g while adding that extra facet

    to

    make your jewelry pieces look

    expensive. It's easy, needs no

    polishing and wears well again

st the body if jewelry is indeed

    what you are creating. Follow

these easy steps for foil fun.

Using a paper backed foil tape, gently guidethe foil around the piece on which you wishto apply a foil. When you get all the wayaround your piece, create an overlap ofabout 1/2 of an inch when bringing the twoends together. Cut the foil tape but do notremove the backing at this time as it ismuch easier to work with the tape while thebacking is on it. Trim it to fit as desired.

1 2)Gently peel back about one inch of thebacking and align your foil onto thepiece. Make sure you have it in place.Be certain you know which way youwant to go before peeling off any more of the backing.

  • 13

Once you have aligned the tape and areheaded in the right direction, gently peelthe back off as you move around the piece. When you get to the end, simply overlapone end over the other.

Next turn your piece over and cut slits inthe foil tape that rises above the back ofyour piece. Cut it and fold it down likeyou are wrapping a present.

    Or youtube it at:www.youtube.com/watch?v=IubGvSsyzls

Move dial at the bottom of my image to 3:53 seconds to begin the2 minute section on applying foil type.

Using the thick side of the bone folder, gentlyrub all surface area of the foil by pressingdown firmly. This will seal the foil as well asgive it a hand hewn look. Gently press downthe edges of the foil to seal around yourimages.

    While fashion

    trends vary beads,

    wire and chain are the

base for basic necklace making. In

this book most projects show only

the beaded part of the necklaces.

In this book I have made partial,

bead and chain necklaces for five reas

    ons:

    1. It's quicker to make a beaded neckl

    ace with

    chain extenders.

    2. It's very fashionable and at the sam

    e time interesting.

    3. It's lighter weight and more comfor

    table for wearing.

    4. It can be money saving depending

on the beads and chain you

    choose.

    5. It stretches my highly prized beads

    further.

With the techniques learned in this pr

oject, you will be able to then

make fully beaded or all chain necklac

    es.

Choose your beads and chain. Determ

ine the length of necklace you

want. Consider the pendant. A basic

design rule of thumb guideline is

the "One Third Rule". For example:

    I like an 18" necklace. When I plan m

    y

design on a bead board, the bottom o

ne third of my length will be beaded.

    That is six

inches at the front of the necklace. T

he other two-thirds will be chain. In

    this case,

twelve inches. This gives your neckla

ce good visual balance. If you want t

    o use more

beads for whatever reason (color, wei

ght, customer request), you would the

    n choose to do

two-thirds of your necklace in beads a

nd one third in chain. Again, this is a

    good design

choice that has balance and interest.

So whatever length you chose, just d

    ivide it by 3 to

make one-thirds. The front third will

be covered in beads, the remaining tw

    o-thirds with

chain, wire, ribbon or what every med

    ium you choose.

Voila! You have just learned inone project how to bead, how tocrimp, and how to add a clasp!

Congratulations! Your pendants will be proudhanging around with you!

    1. Measure and cut your wire and yourchain. When cutting yourwire allow three extra incheson each end so that you haveplenty of room to attach toyour chain. Lay out yourbeads in the desired patternto fit your wire.2. Crimp one end of the wireon to one end of the chainand string on the first half ofyour beads and add your pen-dant. If you need help, review detailed easy to seecrimping steps on page 16.3. String on your remaining

beads and crimp this beaded end onto theother end of your chain. Now you have acomplete necklace but no clasp yet.4. To add a clasp, hold the necklace up by

the pendant. Find the centerpoint at the back of the neck-lace so that you can equallydivide the chain in half.Open a jump ring as shownand hook it through one endof the chain and one part ofthe toggle clasp. 5. Open the second jumpring. Hook this through heother end of the chain andthe other half of the toggleclasp.

    Without the kn

    owledge to crimp, your s

    tyle will

    be cramped into very few

    options in fashion jewelry

    making. Crimping is the

    basic way to properly clo

    se

    beaded jewelry. Not only

    can you use crimping in

    necklaces

and bracelets, it can be u

    sed in earrings, belts, ank

    lets and

has a myriad of other app

    lications. For now, let's le

    arn the

basics as it pertains to a n

    ecklace. Scenario in your

    near

    future: you have cut the

length you desire for a be

    aded

    necklace and need to add

    one side of your clasp.

    1. String 2 crimp beads on one end of your wire. Then put the wire end through one end of yourclasp. Position the crimp beads as shown. 2. Loop your wire not only through your claspbut also around and back to the crimp beads.Loop the wire back through the crimp beads. Some people use only one crimp bead. I havelearned it is best to use two crimp beads forextra sturdiness while keeping your beads onyour neck.3. Using crimp pliers to position the crimp

beads near to theclasp as shown. Notso loose that yourbeads will slidearound but not soclose that the beadsare over crampedwhen strung aroundyour neck. 4. Once in position, crimp beads closedwith the flat part ofthe crimp pliers.Press hard. Makesure the crimp beadsare flat.

    5. Trim the small tail wire off with nippers orcutters as closely to the crimp beads as possible.6. File the tail nub down so that it doesn't"sting" the back of your neck when wearing yourhand crafted necklace. 7. Now string on your beads and when you get tothe other end you know exactly what to do!

    1. Cut thering/shanks off thetop of your crosscharm (4667CS) andthe backs of yourcrystal buttons(G1260.25,G1268.89). 2. Gently file these3 pieces so that theyare smooth. 3. Place a soft clothover the shield so

that you can flatten the shield with a hammer but notdamage the finish.4. Adhere the cross to the top of the shield with E6000.Wait 15 minutes before handling again. 5. Using E6000, apply a magnet to the back of each of thefollowing: G1260.25, G1268.89, 03701CS, 13177CS and theback of the cross on shield that has been drying.Warning! Alert! Watch Out! Magnets have a positve sideand a negative side. Please be sure that you have all thesame side of the magnets facing the same way. In orderfor them to attract to each other (rather than repel), use amarker to put a small dot on the magnets as you pull themapart. Place a mark on all the sides that are facing up asyou separate them from each other. This insures that youknow which side to glue in order for the magnets to attractto each other rather than repel from each other. Let thesedry for 6 hours or longer. Our magnets are super strongand can be pulled off if you don't let them dry well.6. Finally, place a magnet on the backside of your glasspendant. Again, make sure you have the positives and thenegatives aligned so that they attract to each otherthrough the glass rather than push each other away. Youcan simply test this before gluing by holding the magnetsnear each other. You want them to attract so that it holdsyour "Jewel" in place. Let these dry overnight.
