Viet Namese Language - Now

• 17th century, a French missionary named Alexandre de Rhodes developed Quoc Ngu, the Romanized Vietnamese alphabet that's used today.

• Unlike other languages in the region, Vietnamese looks almost readable to a Westerner• The system of accent marks is complex and pronunciation is difficult.

Vietnamese words are almost identical except for the marks mentioned above. These marks are essential for the written Vietnamese because the words are pronounced differently, and have different meanings.

• For example:

• ma ghost • ma' mother (southern accent) or cheek • ma` who, which, that, whom • ma? tomb • ma~ horse or appearance • ma. young rice seeding, or mother (central)
