Investments> Culture>

ArcelorMittal recently announced two important automotive investments – increased production capacity for Usibor® in Southern Europe, and our intention to pursue a joint venture in India. These investments enhance our capacity to supply global carmakers in all their regional markets, providing local, high-quality solutions. Here, we look at how these developments fit into our global automotive strategy.

Investing to better serve Southern Europe The company has announced a €9m ($18.2 M CAD) investment at ArcelorMittal Sagunto to enhance the site’s portfolio of automotive steels to include extra-wide aluminium-silicon coated Usibor® hot stamping steel. By adapting the hot dip galvanising line of its Sagunto plant in Southern Spain, ArcelorMittal will meet growing demand from the automotive industry for innovative coatings. The move will enable us to better serve the Southern European automotive market by producing Usibor® locally.

To meet EU regulations for CO2 emissions – and for passenger safety during crash events – carmakers need to reduce the weight of structural car parts without compromising passengers’ safety – in an affordable way. Our investment at Sagunto enables the site to meet these demands by supplying carmakers with innovative, sustainable steel solutions – whilst gaining an edge over our competitors in-region.

The project will start during the summer of 2015 with the first

production and client product approvals expected by the fourth quarter.

Investing in high-growth marketsForecast to become the world’s fourth-largest automobile manufacturing nation by 2020, India is one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets – and a natural next step in our global automotive strategy. ArcelorMittal recently announced its intention to pursue a joint venture with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – one of India’s leading steel companies.

We already work with several car manufacturers who are active in India – including the likes of Ford, General Motors, Renault-Nissan, Volkswagen and Volvo – and the SAIL partnership would enable us to bring market-leading, global solutions to India.

Part of our automotive mission is to find economically-attractive means of following auto manufacturers as they invest in emerging markets, and the intended joint venture arrangement would offer a comparatively fast route for entering India. We have the expertise and production technology, but the presence of a local partner with SAIL’s production scale would help us gain invaluable expertise on local infrastructure and management.

Our collaboration is still very much in the early stages and key decisions, such as the potential plant location, investment cost, and capacity are yet to be taken. A detailed business plan will be developed in the coming months.

The proposed venture draws parallels with our partnership with Hunan Valin over the VAMA joint venture in China – another high-promise automotive industry.

Investing in our global automotive future

Car manufacturers today have two key requirements, Brian explained to the audience of analysts. They operate using global platforms in which the design is done centrally and where the same products – with the same specifications and quality level – are required in every region. About 46 per cent of passenger vehicles today are produced on global platforms and this number is expected to grow to more than 60 per cent by 2020. With its global footprint, ArcelorMittal is uniquely positioned to supply these products globally.

As worldwide regulation tightens, the growing need for fuel economy is also a key concern for manufacturers, as Brian emphasized in his presentation. In the European Union, the CO2 emission target for new passenger cars is 95g/km, which will be phased in for 95 per cent of vehicles in 2020, and 100 per cent in 2021. In the US and Canada, corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) regulations for light vehicles call for 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

While the majority of the required improvements are expected to come from powertrain efficiency, aerodynamics, rolling resistance and electrification, reducing the weight of the vehicles is also key. In fact, car manufacturers need to achieve a 20 per cent weight reduction in the body-in-white (BIW) to meet these targets.

ArcelorMittal’s automotive strategy is centred around these key requirements, and has already proven successful. Our existing advanced high strength steels (AHSS) alone are enabling the weight reduction needed for manufacturers to achieve their targets.

Introduced in 2010, our S-in motion® range of steel solutions for C-segment vehicles achieved 20 per cent BIW weight reduction from 2009 baseline. Similarly, S-in motion® for Pickup Trucks was delivered in 2014 and achieved a 23 per cent weight reduction from 2013 baseline. This year we will launch the D-segment design, which will reach a 24 per cent reduction from 2015 baseline with commercially available grades. What’s more, these solutions are typically “cost-neutral” to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – with the higher cost of the steel grades offset by the lower volumes required.

But our product development programmes do not stop here. Within the next two years, new grades of steel will be introduced with further weight reduction potential of 3 per cent. These new steel grades include our Fortiform® range of third-generation AHSS for cold stamping, as well as even stronger AHSS for hot stamping, with Usibor® 2000 (vs the current 1500 megapascal MPa) and Ductibor® 1000 (vs the current 500MPa).

One way to apply these materials in targeted areas is through laser welding, where two pieces of steel are welded together by a laser. With this technology, a part can be formed with thicker material where it is needed, leaving the rest in thinner steel, or specifically providing strength and crash energy absorption where needed.

So one of our strengths lies in the uniqueness and unparalleled quality of our steels and steel solutions; but another key differentiating factor of ArcelorMittal is our size and global

scale. Our automotive production facilities are located across Europe, NAFTA, Brazil and South Africa, in addition to joint venture facilities in Turkey and China. To further extend our footprint and seize the growth potential offered by a key emerging market, we are also assessing a new joint venture opportunity in India – having recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Our truly global approach allows us to deliver the right products, to the right markets, at the right time. In China, where we have our VAMA automotive joint venture with Hunan Valin, production of vehicles is expected to grow steadily by 10 million units to approximately 32 million vehicles in 2022, and production is set to almost double in India, to 6.9 million units in the same period.

From coil supplier to engineering solutions supplierIf ArcelorMittal has successfully reached its aim of becoming a preferred supplier for leading global car manufacturers, it is largely thanks to the outstanding work of our 1,300 researchers at ArcelorMittal’s 12 global R&D centres in Europe, North America and South America, with a lab recently opened in Tubarão (Brazil).

The budget allocated to R&D is very significant, as Greg underscored in his presentation to analysts. A total US$260 M was invested in R&D last year – a testament to the company’s belief that we can only stay ahead of the competition if we continue to meet and anticipate customers’ requirements.

To fully understand these challenges and push the barriers in

front of us, ArcelorMittal has created a dedicated team of resident engineers who are based at our customers’ facilities, and whose mission is to make sure our R&D is aligned with the customers’ current and future goals.

This comprehensive approach – ranging from co-engineering, to the delivery of high quality solutions – has allowed ArcelorMittal to become a key partner for the most prestigious vehicle manufacturers in the world, confirming steel as the material of choice.

Volkswagen, for instance – to whom we are supplying advanced high strength steel – has officially stated that steel is making it possible to reduce the weight of its vehicles without the use of more costly materials, such as aluminium and carbon fibre. Volvo, also one of

our customers, has showcased how the increased use of press-hardened steel has made its XC90 model stronger, ensuring maximum occupant protection in all types of crash scenarios.

Our partnership with Honda for the development of the hot stamped door ring also made industry headlines for significantly improving the vehicle’s crash performance and passenger safety, claiming a host of industry awards.

“Through innovation, we believe that steel will remain the material of choice for the automakers, due to its unique ability to provide affordable weight-savings solutions”, Daniel Fairclough said in his closing comments. He added: “We will continue to invest in R&D, innovate and make breakthroughs to ensure steel remains the competitive solution, to

back this important franchise for ArcelorMittal.”

Investors and analysts also had the opportunity to travel to Spain to tour our steel finishing plant in Sagunto (Spain), where the company recently announced an important investment to enable the production of aluminium-silicon coated Usibor® hot stamping steel.

They then moved onto customer Gestamp’s Automotive R&D and stamping facility in Barcelona, where investors could hear and see first-hand why steel is the preferred material, and what makes ArcelorMittal the supplier of choice.

ArcelorMittal steel used in award-winning Philharmonic Hall in Poland The Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin (Poland) – which includes 675 m2 of composite flooring deck Cofraplus 60 and around 6.800 m2 trapezoidal, corrugated and flat sheets - supplied by ArcelorMittal’s Construction Poland team - has won the European Union’s architecture prize, the Mies van der Rohe Award 2015.

In total, 420 projects from 36 countries took part in this competition. Forty projects made it through to the semi-final, among them the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, which also includes 1,000 tonnes of rebars

provided by ArcelorMittal Warszawa.

ArcelorMittal to supply steel fibres to the Doha Metro project in Qatar ArcelorMittal WireSolutions will supply approximately 21,500 tonnes of steel fibres to be used in three lines of the new Doha Metro in Qatar. This represents WireSolutions’ first delivery of steel fibres to the Middle East, and the company’s largest ever delivery of steel fibre.

The steel will be supplied by our WireSolutions sites in Bissen (Luxembourg), Sheffield (United Kingdom), and Sycow (Poland).

The Doha Metro, currently under construction in Qatar’s capital city for an investment of US$35bn, is operated by Qatar Rail.

It is on track to start operating in late 2019 with four lines, an approximate overall length of 300km, and 98 stations.

Ostrava steel goes into African offshore platform ArcelorMittal steel, produced at our Ostrava plant in the Czech Republic, will be used in the construction of an offshore oil rig in Nigeria. The 230 tonnes of steel have been transformed into seamless tubes at Ostrava‘s tubular products subsidiary.

The Egina offshore rig is situated 130km off the Nigerian coast covering an area of 500m2; the oil is extracted here from the depth reaching up to 1,750m, which requires our steels to meet strict parameters and undergo a series of challenging tests.

Fabric of life – supporting culture, transport and industry with steel

Gregory Ludkovsky, head of global R&D, demonstrated how steel is providing innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the automotive industry.

Mr. Mittal, chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal, and Mr. Rakesh Singh, Steel Secretary to the Government of India, signed the Memorandum of Understanding to set up an automotive steel manufacturing facility under a joint venture (‘JV’) arrangement in India.

Steel for the Doha Metro will be supplied by our WireSolutions sites in Bissen (Luxembourg), Sheffield (United Kingdom), and Sycow (Poland).

It’s official – ArcelorMittal Dofasco is among the best in Canada for organizational performance. In July, our team learned that we had achieved a Canada Awards for Excellence Silver recognition in Mental Health at Work® and Canada Awards for Excellence Platinum recognition in Excellence, Innovation and Wellness.

The Canada Awards for Excellence is a program under the Patronage of His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, the Governor General of Canada. It is dedicated to advancing organizational performance across Canada and administered by Excellence Canada. The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1992 by Industry Canada as the National Quality Institute, and then rebranded as Excellence Canada in 2011. The organization develops standards, certifies and recognizes organizational excellence across Canada – “organizations that are best in class and leading the way” according to the Excellence Canada website. It “maintains the

Excellence Innovation and Wellness Standard for organizational performance, based upon the most effective practices and proven management strategies from around the world.”

“While we were pleased with last year’s achievements for the Canada Awards for Excellence,” says Katrina McFadden, VP Corporate Administration and Human Resources, “we are focused on continuous improvement in everything we do. We worked diligently to expand and improve our standing by pursuing the Excellence Innovation and Wellness award and improving on our Mental Health at Work standing. We are very pleased and proud to have been recognized at the Platinum level, the highest in the award category.”

The Excellence Canada assessment team documented four top areas of strength for our company: our focus on health and safety, including Stop.Challenge.Choose and Journey to Zero; World Class Continuous Improvement (WCCI); our Strategy Playbook; and our commitment to corporate responsibility.

“A tremendous amount of hard work and commitment was

required by everyone in your organization to become a recipient of Canada’s pre-eminent recognition program for organizational excellence,” wrote Allan Ebedes, President and CEO Excellence Canada and Canada Awards for Excellence in his congratulatory letter. “In meeting the rigour of the Canada Awards for Excellence requirements, your organization has demonstrated that it is one of the best managed in Canada. We commend you on your great success!”

The Canada Awards for Excellence application and certification process is intense and comprehensive. Excellence Canada representatives reviewed and assessed ArcelorMittal Dofasco from every perspective including employees, customers, leadership, governance, planning, process, social responsibility, suppliers, partners and results. In July, ArcelorMittal Dofasco joined with our colleagues in mining, tubular products and long products to publish the ArcelorMittal Canada Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Report. The report covers all Canadian operations for the year 2014. As the heads of the company’s Canadian business units wrote in a joint letter in the document, “this report is a key part of our commitment to transparency and open dialogue with our stakeholders.” The report also introduces the 10 sustainable development outcomes that will help our global company achieve sustainability leadership:

1. Safe, healthy, quality working lives for our people.

2. Products that accelerate more sustainable lifestyles.

3. Products that create sustainable infrastructure.

4. Efficient use of resources and high recycling rates.

5. Trusted user of air, land and water.

6. Responsible energy user that helps create a lower carbon future.

7. Supply chains that our customers trust.

8. Active and welcomed member of the community.

9. Pipeline of talented scientists and engineers for tomorrow.

10. Our contribution to society measured, shared and valued.

As the report sets out, 2014 brought several notable accomplishments for ArcelorMittal’s Canadian units. It marked a record in overall steel production for the company, which at the same time continued to reduce its Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate by 16.7 per cent. In 2014, the company’s Canadian operations lowered their total CO2 emissions, and contributed more than $2.9 million in the form of corporate philanthropic gifts,

corporate grants, sponsorships and employee giving in its communities. Here in Hamilton, we were the recipient of several notable awards including Canada’s Top 100 Employers and a Canada Award for Excellence (Healthy Workplace).

While the report underscores areas of progress, it also recognizes that there is still room for improvement in Canada such as: meeting the goal of zero lost-time injuries, sharing best practices across business units to improve environmental performance, and formalizing the grievance mechanisms and stakeholder engagement plans more consistently across all business units of the organization.

The report presents many case studies and examples highlighting key initiatives by individual plants and business units of the company’s Canadian locations, all aligned with the organization’s global sustainability and corporate responsibility strategy. It is available online at dofasco.arcelormittal.com.

July 11, 2015Colleagues,

Last night while watching the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, I felt incredibly proud of our team here in Hamilton. I watched our steel being showcased through unique, vibrant pieces of art that literally came together as part of the ceremony to form a Games’ first: a replica cauldron designed with community input. One of the pieces of steel (called scales) features our company logo, which our Don MacVicar (Commercial) proudly placed on the pine-cone shaped cauldron. We also watched in awe as the Games’ cauldron was lit for the first time – together, that’s 34-tonnes of made-in-Hamilton ArcelorMittal Dofasco steel erupting to form the Games’ most iconic symbol.

As Official Steel Supplier to the Games’ cauldron, we worked closely with TO2015 to help bring the vision for the Games’ and People’s cauldrons to life – all in secrecy as the Games’ cauldron is kept confidential until its lighting.

While working with the Games’ organizing committee for more than a year, we specified and supplied 10 types of steel, consulted with fabricators and produced a custom plate steel base for the cauldron. We were even on site during the assembly of the cauldron helping with assembly/construction within the cauldron pedestal.

We also helped bring together representatives of 30 communities to provide input into the Games opening ceremony and People’s (replica) cauldron which was part of the Ceremony and which will find its permanent home in Hamilton as a legacy to the Games. In June, we also launched an important legacy project of the Games: the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Grassroots Soccer program. The Ward 3 and the stadium precinct program was developed in partnership with the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton and District Soccer Association and will give 500 children an opportunity to learn soccer in their own community, with no cost.

This has been a remarkable and once in a lifetime opportunity. In recounting his experiences with being a part of the Opening Ceremony, Don MacVicar talked to me about how the lighting of the cauldron made him reflect on the passing of the torch from the many employees who have come before us. Indeed it was a proud and inspiring moment to see the strength and beauty of our steel together with the power of sport in this incredible event that will forever be remembered and commemorated.

A big thank you to everyone – we all had a hand in creating the steel that forms this beautiful cauldron and we can all be proud of our role in these transformational Games.

You can learn more about the making of the cauldrons at www.competitivefire.ca, and you can learn more about the Games at www.toronto2015.org.

Seven of our employees had a hand in lighting the Games’ cauldronflame as they each ran a leg of the 41-day Torch Relay, including Jesse Love (Security and Loss Prevention above).

The employees and two corporate customers were positioned between Winona and Waterdown during the torch run on Sunday, June 21, while Joanne Diemert (Human Resources) participated during the Toronto leg on July 9. Each carried the torch for 200 metres. Employees were randomly selected from among the top 10 recognized and top 10 recognizers through the Thanks a TON recognition program. The other torch bearers were Kim Hubbard (IT), Jack Popielec (MH&L), Robert Adzija (Steelmaking), Cyril Mcintyre (Cold Roll Products) and Guiseppe Carrescia (Pickling and Cold Roll).

Ian Fehrman (Ironmaking) won a Games’ GOLD with the Canadian Men’s Softball at the baseball venue in Ajax, ON with a 2-1 win over Venezuela on Saturday, July 18. The win extended the team’s streak to eight consecutive gold medals at the Games (2015 marked the return of the sport to the Games’ after it last appeared in 2003).

There were plenty of ArcelorMittal Dofasco supporters cheering for Ian, with a couple of particularly loud voices in the stands. With seats just above the dugout, Ian says he could hear his colleagues Phil Secord and Chuck Armstrong cheering for him in a round robin game against the U.S.A. Ian, a shortstop, sealed that game win, making a double play with a crucial catch and throwing an out at first for a 3-2 win in extra innings.

In the photo at left, Ian tags a Venezuelan player out at second base in a round robin game (that Canada won 4-0).

Ian, who is a Team Leader at the No.3 Blast Furnace, says “It was a great experience. Everything we needed was right there in the Athlete’s Village. There were 6,500 athletes from all different countries at different houses. I lived the life of a professional athlete for a couple of weeks.”

He brought the gold medal in to show some of his colleagues including (above, from left) Ken Bagu, Phil Secord, Ian, Masood Habib and Chuck Armstrong.

A member of the Men’s National Team since 2005, Ian has also competed at the 2006 Pan American Championship (Silver), and the 2015 (Gold), 2013 (5th) and 2009 (Bronze) International Softball Federation World Championships. The 2015 World Championship was won in Saskatoon just two weeks before the Pan American Games. We understand that, for now, Ian is hanging up his cleats. Congratulations on an outstanding softball career, Ian!

Our own Don MacVicar (pink T-shirt, with pink cauldron scale, Commercial) participated in the opening ceremony, placing the Hamilton scale on the People’s cauldron in front of the 45,000 people in attendance. The People’s Cauldron is a replica of the Games’ cauldron and features 30-unique pieces of art representing various community and cultural groups of Ontario. The more information we collect, the more hazards we know about and the more effectively we can manage our safetyUtilizing the Byrd Accident Pyramid theory, teams of employees are documenting and eliminating unsafe behaviours and conditions

> Health and Safety

A laminated map covered with colourful stickers hangs on a wall in the Steelmaking production offices. With each new sticker, the Pyramid of Steel team is one step further on its Journey to Zero.

Since April, this team has been working with the Pyramid Builders System to observe and record unsafe behaviours and conditions in an effort to improve safety and eliminate accidents.

Geoff Robins, Health and Safety Process Leader for Steelmaking says the team is focused on an area with traffic, a lot of equipment and pedestrians.

“If there is an accident there, it could be a serious one. We are trying to identify any hazards and stop the accident before it happens,” he said.

The team posted a map of the area on the wall and any time an unsafe behaviour or condition is noted, a sticker is placed in that spot on the map. The information is also recorded on a card and later entered into a database.

“It became pretty obvious in the first few days what spots on the map were showing up. It pointed clearly to what needed to be addressed,” Robins said. “Until you see that visual all marked up, no one considered it.”

This is the idea behind ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Pyramid Builders System. It is based on a mathematical formula called the

Byrd Accident Pyramid, which relies on the premise that the more information we collect, the more hazards we know about, and the more effectively we can manage our safety.

Last year, a team from Central Trades and Services machine shop undertook a pilot project using the Byrd’s Pyramid concept. They called themselves the Pyramid Builders and created a process to seek out hazards, finding more than 1,000 unsafe behaviours and conditions in their area over six weeks. The team then developed tactics to eliminate the behaviours and conditions. The pilot was a tremendous success and now other teams are following suit. In 2016, the entire ArcelorMittal Dofasco organization will use this model on our Journey to Zero, which is about preventing accidents by understanding and managing hazards.

Robins said the Pyramid of Steel team found behaviours including trucks backing up without a signal, forklift operators not beeping their horns and truck drivers not wearing earplugs or a helmet.

The team is now analysing the data to decide the next steps. Robins said possible actions include moving the pedestrian walkway and installing an automatic horn that blasts if someone is approaching within 10 feet.

Kevin Moffatt, Health and Safety Process Leader for Material Handling & Logistics, said

housekeeping rules in his unit were already very good but his team still found hazards using the Pyramid Builder System.

“We have had no accidents in a long time but we were still collecting cards,” he said. “As good as we are, we are not as good as we think we are. Even though we are not having accidents, behaviours still need to change.”

Moffatt said some examples include employees leaving items in walkways or entering and exiting the building improperly. As well, employees using the area to get to a nearby office area walk without work boots, helmets or safety glasses.

“When we presented the data to our members, they were shocked,” Moffatt said, adding that the team has collected a few hundred cards and is now examining trends.

Moffatt says it was difficult at first to convince employees that no names are recorded on the cards and they are only used for data collection and not to report anyone for disciplinary action. He also says education is needed to help everyone understand the difference between conditions and behaviours. He also cautions that the reporting process has to be quick and simple to inspire widespread participation.

“I do believe the company is going in the right direction,” he said. “We need to understand our behaviours and working conditions so we can change our behaviour and the way we think.”

Play Day!

Our staff at the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre welcomed nearly 4,000 Hamilton students from the Hamilton Wentworth and Hamilton Catholic School Boards for its annual Play Days. The days provide an opportunity for students from Equal Opportunity Schools a chance to spend the day playing in a natural setting, while also enjoying a barbeque lunch.

Children from 12 local schools were treated to lunch and a day of activities including mini golf, soccer, baseball, basketball,

beach volleyball and a play in the Centre’s irrigation sprinkler which is one of the highlights of the day. The free Play Days were launched in 2011 and have become a much anticipated annual event that the students and staff alike enjoy (as evidenced by the Thank You card from Benetto School.) Schools that participated this year were: Delta High School, Queen Victoria, Central, C.B. Stirling, Bennetto, St. Lawrence, St. Pats, St. Bridget’s, Westwood, St. Anne, St. David and Adelaide Hoodless.

Amanda McManus (Co-op Student, Integrated Health) and friend Jeff Bielby completed a 10-day walk from the CN Tower to the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa to raise money and awareness for the Canadian Mental Health Association. The pair walked approximately 40 kilometres each day and raised $4,045 in their campaign. They also appeared on CHCH Television to promote their walk. Dubbed “Hiking for Happiness,” Amanda and Jeff say the walk was inspirational: “Family, friends and strangers have been saying how inspirational this journey has been and though that is touching to hear, we feel the opposite…the kind words and stories told to us have been the inspiration for us to keep moving forward to continue to promote mental health awareness.” Visit hikingforhappiness.com to learn more.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco participants wrapped up a very successful fourth annual Personal Best program! The six-month program offered different streams including the Healthwise, Weightwise, Resiliency and Get up and Go streams. Participants lost a combined 545 lbs of fat mass and 147 inches from their waists. Congratulations to our draw prize winners who each received a $50 gift card to SportChek: Kevin Bialkowski (CTS), Miriam Wright (IT), Michael Bovenkamp (EMT), Greg Duern (Ironmaking) and Dave Durfey (Finance). Big congratulations to both Team Yellow and Green as well for tying for the highest percentage of returning team members for re-assessment at the end of the program!

ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s KOBM Steelmaking Innovation Through Automation project was been named an American Metal Market Steel Excellence award winner for Best Operational Improvement. The award was presented at a gala dinner in New York City on June 9, at the Steel Success Strategies Conference. The winning project resulted in ArcelorMittal Dofasco having the only BOF in the world that doesn’t require sampling. Notably, it is also the first fully automated tapping furnace in the ArcelorMittal Group, and one of only three in the world. These milestones have not gone unnoticed by the industry, as this project was also awarded a worldsteel “Steelie Award” for best innovation.

Jesse Montani (No. 2 Temper Mill) was selected to compete in Amazing Race Canada with his brother, Gino. Jesse is a former McMaster Marauder football player while Gino works for the City of Hamilton. Everyone at Dofasco is behind the Montani brothers – you can watch Jesse and Gino on the Amazing Race Canada on Wednesdays at 9/8C/8ATL.

In June, Ray Henriksbo (Cokemaking) participated in the bicentenary re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo (Belgium) attended by 6,000 reenactors from more than 20 countries. Ray’s unit, The Royal Scots, had to pass period authenticity standards for clothing and equipment a year in advance in order to participate in the event, with a representative from the Waterloo Committee inspecting the unit and observing their drills on the field. The Royal Scots are part of the 200-man British North American Brigade which enjoyed the honour of having autonomous command amongst the allied forces that were at the Waterloo re-enactment. Here Ray, right, in uniform with the battle’s Lion’s Mound monument in the background. The Battle of Waterloo took place on June 18, 1815 and saw Napolean defeated by the allied forces of the Seventh Coalition.
