Who is the most influential person in your life? From time to time, sales representatives would visit 3M, where I used to work. They would come from many places and locations. One in particular, from New York, provided a lesson in faith that would be the beginning of influences and blessings in my life. A group of us were with Bill (the rep) at a local restaurant talking about the most influential people in our life. Many interesting names were given, but when it came to Bill, he said, “The most influential per-son in my life, is Jesus Christ.” The table grew silent until someone said, “Why?” Without sounding like a preacher, Bill said, “Who else would ever have a greater impact in our world? Who else is remembered, respected and ad-mired, even worshipped after over 2,000 years? What other person ever gave so much to each of us? What other person has as close a relationship with God?” His answer fasci-nated us, and no one could argue with it. One by one, we all responded by saying, “I wish I had said that.” And, there have been times when I wonder why I hadn’t. Ask yourself the same question. Who would that person be? Now that I gave you the best answer, or rather a sales representative named Bill did, would you and I be so as-sured of our relationship with the Lord? Are we assured that we know him so well that no one else comes close to what he has done for us that we could hardly say anyone but Jesus Christ is the most influential person in our lives? As the new year begins to progress towards Lent, it may be a good time to think about the question and our answer. It may be a time to look at our relationship with Christ. We are everything to him. Is he everything to us? I think our spiritual lives can always use some fine tuning or re-alignment. Our relationship with Christ may take some rec-onciliation or even a conversion. But our relationship with the most influential person in our lives will continue to help us live as we should. We may not have a sales rep to remind us of that, but we do have God’s Word to show us how it is done. Maybe it is time for us to let our Lord influence our lives. We can only be better if we do. Fr. Dave Zimmer

PRAYER WARRIORS NEEDED Some of our students are preparing for their First Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation and they need your prayers! We have prepared individual enve-lopes with the name of a child who is preparing for either First Holy Communion or Confirmation and placed them in a basket in the gathering area of church. If you are willing to take a child under your “prayer wings” to pray for and possibly mentor, please take an envelope and begin praying for that particular child. The envelopes are marked “BOY” or “GIRL.” More information is included in each envelope. For any questions or concerns, please call the parish office. Thank you for your prayers!

Synod SnippetsBy Fr. Jason Signalness

Last week, I discussed the fact that sacraments are free, and that the Church never charges a fee for them. Now, let me explain a related and significant change in our dio-cese’s policies, found in synod statute 91. It has been the tradition when a wedding, funeral, bap-tism or other service was performed by a member of the clergy some money was given to the member of the clergy as an expression of gratitude. In the past, this was income for the member of the clergy. As of January 1, that will no longer be the case in the Diocese of Bismarck. Any money given to a member of the clergy when some service is performed, regardless of the intention of the one giving the money, will be income for the church, not the clergy. The synod statutes, based on Canon Law, see money given in connection with some service as a “stole fee.” The word “stole” here refers to the band of cloth, called a stole, that a priest or deacon wears over his shoulders. It does not mean funds are being stolen. In the past, clergy could keep those funds as income. Going forward, that is not the case. A gift given to a member of the clergy, on the other hand, is income for him. However, he can only accept a gift when it is not connected to any individual service he has performed unless a stole fee has already been given to the parish. Let me try to summarize. This new rule means money you hand to Father after a baptism, wedding, funeral, etc., does not go to Father; it goes to the church. If you want to give Father something (never required, of course) you can do it in a birthday card, Christmas card, or a general thank you note not related to any individual service he has performed for you. Let me now move on to the synod’s discussion of the Sacrament of Baptism. Statutes 96 and 97 requires pastors to remind people that baptism is necessary for salvation. They also require pastors to explain to parents that they “should arrange for the Baptism of their children as soon as possible after birth. Normally, it should not be deferred beyond three weeks.” These statutes also explain that under normal circum-stances, the pastor of the person being baptized should perform the baptism. In case of an emergency where a life is in danger, however, anyone can do it. It is important everyone know this and be prepared to do it if the situation arises. All that is required to perform such a baptism is that the

vocation view— Have you tried what Jesus di-rects us to do? Love of enemy, no payback, and going beyond what is asked are difficult to observe in our world. Be attentive to these commands and ask for the grace to live them. (Matthew 5:38-48)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION The Book of Leviticus from which our First Reading comes is the third book in the Old Testament. Its name in part comes from the Levites, who were the tribe to which Aaron belonged. Historically Aaron is consid-ered to be the one from whom priests are descended. However, the Bible offers instructions to all of us, not just to priests. In today’s reading from Leviticus, God says to Moses that he should teach the people this: “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.”

There is no way, of course, that we can be as holy as God is. God is divine, not human, and thus His Holi-ness is above and way beyond our capabilities. What God is saying to us though is that we do need to strive for holiness. We often speak of our call to holiness and how we can try to achieve that. One way is to embrace stewardship and all it entails as a way of life.

Will that make us holy like the Lord? No, but it does mean that we need to comprehend that it is God and God’s wisdom we must embrace and follow. Holiness for us means we need to attempt to separate ourselves from those things and thoughts and ideas which can be viewed as not holy in the Eyes of God. Yes, it is im-possible for us, but yet that is what we must try to do.Continued on page 7

Reading I : Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18To be like God is to be loving.• Leviticus 19 is a collection of miscellaneous

laws concerning conduct.• Keeping the Ten Commandments, worshiping

God, and living justly were prescribed.• The reason for all the laws is to be like God.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 3:16-23To love one another is to live.• Wisdom had divided the community.• Worldly wisdom is folly to God.• Obey God and be like God. To be like God is to

love one another.

Gospel : Matthew 5:38-48Forgive and love to conquer evil.• The Old Testament “an eye for an eye,” was an

attempt to limit evil.• Monetary fines had become more common.• Jesus advised that evil is conquered by good.

“As the light of the sun so greatly surpasses that of the stars, that in it they are no longer visible; it so overwhelms them that they are as if they were not; so does the great Virgin Mother surpass in sanctity the whole court of Heaven.”

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER • March 3 World Day of Prayer (WDP) is a worldwide ecumenical move-ment of women of many faith traditions who come together to ob-serve a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in March. Each year a different country serves as the writer of the World Day of Prayer worship service. The 2016 World Day of Prayer service will begin at the first sunrise on March 3, 2017, in the Pacific region and, following the Earth’s orbit, will spread around the world. For 2017, the women of the Philippines invite us to consider thesewords: “Am I being unfair to you?” The women of the Philippines share their stories of intergenerational wisdom, traditions, and expe-riences of God’s profound love and acceptance. We will learn of a cultural practice called dagyaw, which is a communal way of labor-ing on neighbors’ farms and sharing the harvest among all. It is a way to build and sustain a community. The theme for 2017 is taken from Matthew 20:1–16, the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. While Jesus sees nothing wrong in giving generously, the workers react dif-ferently and feel entitled to receive more. As we listen to the women of the Philippines throughout the worship service, we are called to confess, to take responsibility, and to answer God’s call for justice. WDP’s motto, “Informed prayer leads to prayerful action,” affirms that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasur-able influence. As we observe WDP 2017, millions of God’s people suffer from violence, exploitation, the effects of a global economic cri-sis, and the hardships of emigration. We encourage you to begin think-ing about actions that you can take to further expand God’s kingdom. Throughout the service, the women of WDP Philippines invite us to accept Jesus’ infinite blessing and exhort us to receive others into the kingdom of God. Let us walk in faith and prayerful action!

Continued from page 4 SYNODone performing the baptism desire to do what the Church does in baptism (and not something contrary to it) and to pour water three times over the person, saying while they do so, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” If you perform such a baptism, you must notify the pastor of the place where the baptism took place (102.2). Regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation, statute 104 explains in our diocese all children in a parish are to be confirmed between the “age of reason,” usually second grade and the second semester of the sophomore year of high school. Statute 107 discusses who may serve as a Confirmation sponsor and notes the sponsor should be the sponsor (godparent) from Baptism, if possible. Sponsors must not be a parent or spouse, be at least 16, confirmed and living the faith.
