Two New Faces They look so young! And they are! They didn’t show their nervousness, but they had to be. After all, it wasn’t that long ago we were laying hands on them, during the ordination rite at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bis-marck. This was their first clergy conference held in Me-dora last week. And each would have a turn presiding at one of the Masses in front of the Bishop, all their peers, young and old, a handful of deacons… why would they be nervous. I can give you quite a list of the reasons why. But, they did it as if it were a rite of passage required to be a part of any group of priests belonging to a diocese. Fr. Jordan Dosch and Fr. Greg Luger, known to all of us “veterans” of the priesthood as the “baby priests.” They are our “baby brothers” who said yes to God and after at least four years of formation, were ordained priests to serve the Church of the Diocese of Bismarck. And we are grateful. Each began their homily in the same way, confessing they were very humbled to stand before us which is an-other way of saying we’re very intimidating! Not that any of us were there evaluating every move they made and ev-ery word that came from their mouths. God forbid! In all sincerity, we are grateful for the new life they bring to the priests of our diocese as they also represent the hope we have as they bring new life through the sacraments to the people they serve. Yes, we are blessed to have them and we continue to pray for the others in formation, such as Nick Vetter and Steven Vetter, and those who have yet to answer the call. Let our prayers be the gentle nudge they need to explore the possibility of their vocation as a priest, religious or deacon. Last week, I spoke at the Msgr. Thomas McGread Stew-ardship Conference in Wichita, Kansas. It is always inspir-ing to return to the place where “Catholic Stewardship” was formed and how it has influenced and enlivened the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. The evidence was obvious as we noted that the Diocese ordained ten men this year and will ordain ten more men next year; twenty new priests in two years! Fifty faces of seminarians are pictured on their posters. What is going on in Wichita? Stewardship is the answer. And you will hear that from the bishops, priests, lay people and the seminarians themselves. Most of them have learned to live their faith by being taught to practice stewardship as a way of life from early on. And now, about fifty are considering turning their lives back to the Lord and serve the Church of their diocese; a stewardship diocese known throughout the country. Please know that you may hear about stewardship quite often from me. It has defined my life, as a Christian, a Cath-olic, a priest, a pastor and a human being. How much stew-ardship may have played a role in my becoming a priest would require a lot of reflection and thought. I know that it is my way of life now and always will be for stewardship as a way of life is the best way to be that disciple we are all called to be. Let us continue to pray about the stewardship of our parishes, and who knows, in the near future the new faces standing before their “brother priests” just might be some who are very familiar to all of us.

Saint Quote of the Week“The disbelief of Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of the other disciples. As he touches Christ and is won over to belief, every doubt is cast aside and our faith is strengthened. So the disciple who doubted, then felt Christ’s wounds, becomes a witness to the real-ity of the resurrection.”

vocation view — If you are willing to offer your life for Jesus’ sake, you will find it. By walking the path we come to know Jesus’ promise is real. Pray for courage and the willingness to “let go and let God.” (Matthew 16:21-27)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Our Second Reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans is quite short, but as is ever the case with Holy Scripture it contains a central message which is quite important to us. One of the ongoing chal-lenges of being Catholic and Christian in today’s society is that society, cultural norms, sometimes seem to work against our efforts to live as followers and disciples of Christ. Paul sums up that struggle succinctly as he says, “Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and per-fect.” Paul offers two suggestions in terms of combating the temptation to conform and agree. First, he calls for a “renewal” of our minds. Often in today’s society the standard opinion is that it is feelings,

2017 ~ The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions and Messages of

Our Lady of Fatima

During and after the apparitions, in the short time Francisco and Jacinta spent on earth, they had sev-eral private revelations–especially Jacinta. Below is another excerpt of a principal revelation to Jacinta.

WEBSITES: www.anf.org (America Needs Fatima website), www.fatimafortoday.com and wafusa.org BOOKS: Lucia’s Memoirs: Fatima in Lucia’s Own Words; FREE

On Fashions:To Mother Godinho: “The sins which cause most souls to go to hell are the sins of the flesh.” Directly enlightened from above, this perfectly innocent, barely ten-year-old girl repeats what Saint Alphon-sus Liguori says, that it is sins against chastity “that fill hell with souls.” When Mother Godinho asked Jacinta if she understood what it meant to be “pure,” she answered, “I do. To be pure in body is to keep chastity. To be pure in soul is not to commit sins, not to look at what one should not see . . .” The other, rather prophetic statement of Jacinta, is: “Fash-ions will much offend Our Lord.” It is well to recall here that modesty is the outer defense of chastity, the walls that defend the castle, as well as the gar-dens that adorn the palace. The correct question, when it comes to fashion, is not what is the extreme limit at which one is allowed to arrive, but how can one’s attire more clearly manifest love of modesty and of the virtue of purity.

Reading I : Jeremiah 20:7-9I suffer for the sake of doing God’s work.• The first reading refers to a time when the prophet

Jeremiah has just come out of hiding in fear for his life.

• Jeremiah is mocked and scorned for preaching against the sins of Israel.

• Even at the cost of such suffering, preaching God’s word is better for Jeremiah than suppressing it.

Reading II : Romans 12:1-2Be transformed.• Paul proclaims self-surrender in the Letter to the

Romans.• When we offer God our whole life, our prayer and

rituals are meaningful.• Paul urges Christians to let their lives be trans-

formed in the image of eternal life.

Gospel : Matthew 16:21-27Take up your cross.• In a series of three passages, Jesus announces his

imminent suffering and death, which is to be fol-lowed by his being raised from the dead.

• In today’s passage, a misunderstanding of the pre-diction is voiced by Peter. It becomes clear that fidelity to Jesus would ultimately cost the disciple life itself.

• The paradox here is that the one who willingly gives up mortal life for Jesus’ sake gains eternal life.

Continued from page 4 REFLECTIONhow we feel, that are most important. Living in that way ignores the mind approach. Second, if we do try to sort things out intel-lectually we can only be successful in God’s eyes if we seek truth. The question we must pose to ourselves and to which we need to seek a conclusion is not “How do I feel?” or even “What do I think?” The important question for us is “What is true and what does God’s Word say?” The philosopher and author C. S. Lewis defined truth simply when he wrote: “No philosophical theory which I have yet come across is a radical improvement on the words of Genesis, that ‘…in the beginning God made heaven and earth’.”
